Childhood trauma and suicide attempt: A meta-analysis of longitudinal studies from the last decade.

Childhood trauma (CT) is a modifiable risk factor for lifetime suicide attempts (SA). However, the extent to which each type of CT increases SA risk is unclear. This study aimed to conduct a meta-analysis of longitudinal studies published in the last 10 years about the relationship between CT and lifetime SA risk. The PUBMED, PsycINFO, ISI, and EMBASE databases were searched for cohort studies that reported AS during follow-up and included an assessment of CT. A meta-analysis was conducted to identify potential effects of each type of CT on SA. Seven unique studies were included for review. Se

Influence of obestatin on the gastric longitudinal smooth muscle from mice: mechanical and electrophysiological studies.

Obestatin is a hormone released from the stomach deriving from the same peptide precursor as ghrelin. It is known to act as an anorectic hormone decreasing food intake, but contrasting results have been reported about the effects of obestatin on gastrointestinal motility. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether this peptide may act on the gastric longitudinal smooth muscle by using a combined mechanical and electrophysiological approach. When fundal strips from mice were mounted in organ baths for isometric recording of the mechanical activity, obestatin caused a tetrodotoxin-i

Longitudinal fundus and retinal studies with SD-OCT: a comparison of five mouse inbred strains.

Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) has recently been established as a method for in vivo imaging of fundus and retina in the mouse. It enables more effective studies of retinal diseases including investigations of etiopathologic mechanisms. In order to learn more about longitudinal fundus development and to enable recognition of disease-associated irregularities, we performed confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (cSLO) and SD-OCT measurements in the inbred strains C57BL/6J, C3HeB/FeJ, FVB/NCrl, BALB/cByJ, and 129S2/SvJ when they were between 2 and 6 months of age. Impact of opioid pharmacotherapy on arterial stiffness and vascular ageing: cross-sectional and longitudinal studies.

Whilst there is a small literature on the cardiovascular toxicity of opiates, there is no detailed antemortem data on non-cardiovascular patient populations. A cross-sectional and longitudinal naturalistic observational study was performed comparing methadone (N = 71)-, buprenorphine (N = 593)-, naltrexone (N = 23)-treated patients with controls (N = 576) on indices of arterial stiffness and vascular age by Pulse Wave Analysis in primary care, 2006-2011. Controls were younger 29.96 ± 0.45 (mean ± SEM) vs. 34.00 ± 0.34-39.22 ± 1.11 years (all P < 0.005) and had fewer smokers (15.9 % vs. 86.9 %-

Canadian Cohort Obstructive Lung Disease (CanCOLD): Fulfilling the need for longitudinal observational studies in COPD.

Awareness, diagnosis and treatment of COPD, compared to other major causes of death, remains far too low. This article describes the protocol objectives, design and the approaches taken in the Canadian Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (CanCOLD) study, an epidemiological and integrated research. The CanCOLD study aims at better understanding heterogeneity of COPD presentation and disease progression. We hypothesize that individuals with unfavourable COPD "phenotypes" and subjects at-risk (ever smokers) with unhealthy lifestyle habits, environmental/work exposure, or co-morbidities will have inc

The energetic pathway to mobility loss: an emerging new framework for longitudinal studies on aging.

The capacity to walk independently is a central component of independent living. Numerous large and well-designed longitudinal studies have shown that gait speed, a reliable marker of mobility, tends to decline with age and as a consequence of chronic disease. This decline in performance is of utmost importance because slow walking speed is a strong, independent predictor of disability, healthcare utilization, nursing home admission, and mortality. Based on these robust findings, it has been postulated that age-associated decline in walking speed is a reliable barometer of the effect of biolog

Practical operationalizations of risk factors for fracture in older women: results from two longitudinal studies.

Several guidelines on osteoporosis have proposed algorithms to identify persons at high risk of fractures. Although these algorithms include well-known risk factors, it is not clear how they can best be operationalized for use in general practice. The aim of this study was to compare the predictive performance of different operationalizations of four categories of risk factors for fractures that can be used in general practice. This study included 4157 women of > or =60 yr of age (mean +/- SD: 74.1 +/- 9.1 yr) with a median follow-up of 8.9 yr of the Rotterdam Study and 762 women of > or =65 y

Functional brain imaging in the dementias: role in early detection, differential diagnosis, and longitudinal studies.

This review considers the role of functional brain imaging techniques in the dementias. The substantial assistance that especially single-photon emission tomography and positron emission tomography can play in the initial diagnosis of dementia and in the differential diagnosis of the specific dementing disorder is discussed. These techniques alone essentially match the sensitivity and specificity of clinical diagnoses in distinguishing Alzheimer's dementia (AD) from age-matched controls, from frontal lobe dementia and vascular dementia, and even from Lewy body dementia. Newer analytic techniqu

Sarcopenia and Risk of Cardiovascular Events and Mortality: A Meta-analysis of Longitudinal Observational Studies.

BACKGROUND: The burden of cardiovascular events remains substantial with current care, highlighting the clinical importance of identifying high-risk populations. Sarcopenia, which affects 10%-27% of older adults worldwide, is modifiable but under-recognized in cardiovascular prevention because of unclear risk associations. We aimed to clarify the association between sarcopenia and cardiovascular events risk. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched for longitudinal studies that reported on associations between sarcopenia or its related traits with cardiovascular events risk u

Cognitive decline over time in myotonic dystrophy type 1: a systematic review of longitudinal studies.

BACKGROUND: Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1 (DM1) is a multisystem genetic disorder and the most common muscular dystrophy in adults. Central nervous system involvement is well-documented in DM1, including cognitive impairment. Cross-sectional studies have described a heterogeneous neuropsychological profile; however, the trajectory of cognitive functioning over time remains unclear, highlighting the need to focus on longitudinal studies. This systematic review aimed to examine longitudinal evidence on cognitive progression in DM1 and to analyze patterns of decline across clinical phenotypes. METHO

Longitudinal Methods Versus Multiple Imputation to Infer Missing Maternal Data in Registry-Based Pregnancy Studies.

BACKGROUND: In birth registries, incomplete recording of information leads to missing values. Multiple imputation (MI) by chained equations is a widely used method for analysing datasets with missing data. It is unknown whether using registry records from multiple pregnancies contributed by the same woman could potentially give more accurate values when resolving missing data. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relative performance of five methods to infer missing data on maternal characteristics using data from a medical birth registry, comparing longitudinal methods and MI with data from previo

Arrhythmic risk in mitral valve prolapse with mitral annular disjunction: meta-analysis of longitudinal studies.

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is frequently associated with mitral annular disjunction (MAD). Although numerous studies and emerging consensus suggest an arrhythmogenic role for MAD, there is a lack of large-scale meta-analyses of longitudinal studies to definitively confirm this association. We aim to evaluate the longitudinal arrhythmic risk in patients with MVP and MAD. We systematically searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Scopus for longitudinal studies assessing arrhythmic risk in MVP patients with MAD, from inception to May 2025. Diagnostic performance measures (sensitivity, specificity

Sleep Biomarkers for Predicting Cognitive Decline and Alzheimer's Disease: A Systematic Review of Longitudinal Studies.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are considered a hallmark of dementia, and strong evidence supports the association between alterations in sleep parameters and cognitive decline in patients with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease (AD). OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to summarize the existing evidence on the longitudinal association between sleep parameters and cognitive decline, with the goal of identifying potential sleep biomarkers of AD-related neurodegeneration. METHODS: Literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases from inception t

Characterising patterns of COVID-19 and long COVID symptoms: evidence from nine UK longitudinal studies.

Multiple studies across global populations have established the primary symptoms characterising Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and long COVID. However, as symptoms may also occur in the absence of COVID-19, a lack of appropriate controls has often meant that specificity of symptoms to acute COVID-19 or long COVID, and the extent and length of time for which they are elevated after COVID-19, could not be examined. We analysed individual symptom prevalences and characterised patterns of COVID-19 and long COVID symptoms across nine UK longitudinal studies, totalling over 42,000 participants.

Workplace Psychosocial Factors and Their Association With Musculoskeletal Disorders: A Systematic Review of Longitudinal Studies.

This systematic review examines literature regarding the relationship between workplace psychosocial factors and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Musculoskeletal disorders are the leading cause of work disability, resulting in billions of dollars of financial losses. Evidence suggests that workplace psychosocial factors can lead to the development and progression of MSDs. A data search was conducted in MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsychINFO, Scopus, and CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) from August 2009 to May 2020 inclusive. Personality and health: Disentangling their between-person and within-person relationship in three longitudinal studies.

Personality traits and physical health both change over the life span. Theoretical models and empirical evidence suggest that these changes are related. The current study investigated the dynamic relations between personality traits and physical health at both the between-person and the within-person levels. Data were drawn from three longitudinal studies: the Veterans Affairs Normative Aging Study (NAS; N = 1,734), the Longitudinal Internet Studies for the Social Sciences (LISS; N = 13,559), and the Swedish Adoption/Twin Study of Aging (SATSA, N = 2,209). Personality maturation through sense of mastery? Longitudinal evidence from two education-to-work transition studies.

OBJECTIVE: Why personality changes in young adulthood remains a critical theoretical and empirical question. We studied personality change during the education-to-work transition, including mean-level personality change and its specific timing, the degree of individual variability in change, and the link between sense of mastery and personality change. METHODS: We used two intensive longitudinal studies. Study 1 included 5 waves of data across 2 years during the university-to-work transition (N = 309; mean-aged 25). Study 2 included 3 waves of data across 8 months during an internship-heavy t
