Successful treatment of a lung abscess without surgical intervention in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: An 8-year-old neutered female domestic shorthair cat was referred with complaints of lethargy, anorexia, fever, tachypnoea and a pulmonary mass on thoracic radiography. Whole-body CT revealed the presence of a nodular lesion in the right caudal lobe of the lung. Fine-needle aspiration of the lung mass yielded purulent fluid and cytology showed a large number of mildly to moderately degenerated neutrophils with numerous cocci and bacilli, leading to the diagnosis of a lung abscess. Empirical administration of doxycycline and orbifloxacin was initiated on the day of referral. Bacte

Infantile osteomyelitis of the fourth rib causing the occurrence of a lung abscess.

Infantile osteomyelitis of the rib is rare but can be complicated by intrapleural pyogenic lesions. Even if findings suggest another infection focus, osteomyelitis should be considered if there are changes on radiographs. In addition, it can be prevented by maintaining the dermal barrier function through skin care.

[Lung Abscess Diagnosed as Adenocarcinoma by Needle Biopsy;Report of a Case].

We report a case of lung abscess misdiagnosed as adenocarcinoma based on cytologic findings of the sample obtained from needle biopsy. A 45-year-old man consulted our hospital because of fever, wet cough and an abnormal shadow on a chest X-ray film. A chest computed tomography revealed gradually enlarging pulmonary mass in the left S6 infiltrating the S5. A diagnosis of lung cancer was suspected and surgery was performed. Pathological findings of the specimen showed atypical cells with a large nucleus and a gross papillary neoplasm by needle biopsy. The patient underwent left lower lobectomy a

Mitral valve replacement in a patient with a collapsed lung and a giant abscess.

Mitral valve replacement was performed on a 75-year-old man with a history of pulmonary tuberculosis. Computed tomography showed a collapsed left lung and counterclockwise rotation of the heart due to a hard abscess. Surgery was performed through a median sternotomy, and extensive pericardial suspension was useful for obtaining an adequate view. Despite poor pulmonary function, the patient was extubated on the day of surgery and had an uneventful postoperative course. Cardiac surgery can be performed in patients with a single functional lung if their preoperative respiratory function is good e

[Patient with a lung abscess, primarily treated with drainage followed by antibiotics].

A 45-year-old woman presented herself with coughing, nocturnal sweating, weight loss, and chest pain, left laterally. In the previous 5 months she had been treated twice with antibiotics due to a suspected pneumonia. With the help of a CT scan, 2 subpleural lung abscesses were diagnosed. The primary treatment was CT-guided drainage, as a result of which the largest abscess was emptied and a microbiological diagnosis could be established. Subsequently, the patient made a quick recovery with the help of specific antibiotics. It might be better to drain lung abscesses, especially subpleural ones,

[Clinical picture, diagnosis and treatment of anaerobic abscess of the lung and pleurisy].

Bacteriological examinations of 65 patients with abscesses of lungs and pleuritis have shown that non-sporulating anaerobic bacteria were isolated in 85% of purulent foci (without a concomitant aerobic microflora). Express-methods of diagnosis taking only 30-40 minutes give opportunities for early etiotropic therapy. Best results of treatment of anaerobic abscesses of lungs and pleuritis were obtained by a combination of sufficient drainage with the purposeful antianaerobic therapy.

A rare complication of pleural drainage: Communicating lung and subcutaneous abscesses.

Pleural drainage is a key element in the management of parapneumonic effusions. Although generally safe, rare complications may occur. We report a case of a 79-year-old male, admitted with a community-acquired pneumonia and a left-sided complex parapneumonic effusion requiring drainage. Initial treatment with antibiotics and drainage resulted in clinical improvement, and the patient was discharged. Seven weeks later, the patient was re-admitted with clinical deterioration. Imaging revealed a large lung abscess communication with a subcutaneous abscess through a pleurocutaneous fistula at the p

Lung abscess: an update on the current knowledge and call for future investigations.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Lung abscess is a severe and complex respiratory infection. The purpose of this review is to discuss recent publications on lung abscess, covering topics such as epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment and prevention. RECENT FINDINGS: Risk factors associated with lung abscess include structural lung disease, poor dental hygiene, and ventilator-associated pneumonia, while concerns are now raised regarding the potential of electronic cigarettes use as a risk factor. The complexity of lung abscess is reflected by the relative high number of case reports d

[Cavernostomy for Extensive Intrapulmonary Cavitary Abscesses That Turned into Destroyed Lungs].

Surgical resection of the infected lung with curative intent is the treatment of choice for lung abscesses that are difficult to control with medical treatment alone. However, lung resection is considered difficult in some cases. Herein, we report two cases of destroyed lungs with severe symptoms, for which palliative cavernostomy was performed instead of infected lung resection. Case 1 was a 45-year-old man who had granulomatosis with polyangiitis in both lungs. Steroid pulse and immunosuppression therapies were repeated, resulting in a huge, destroyed lung on the right side with chronic necr

A decade's experience of pediatric lung abscess and empyema at a community hospital.

BACKGROUND: Discussions on the diagnostic and management of acquired pediatric lung pathology are usually published by large tertiary children's hospitals. It is likely that much of this pathology is actually seen and managed in nonacademic practices. METHODS: A 10-year retrospective review of patients under 18-years of age, treated for lung abscesses or empyema was performed. RESULTS: Nineteen empyema and four lung abscesses were included. Presenting symptoms, workup, and management are reviewed. A unique subset (n = 4) of atypical pulmonary pathology is described. A 14-year-old with a vapi

[Epiphrenic oesophageal diverticulum with an oesophagobronchial fistula resulting in a lung abscess].

Epiphrenic oesophageal diverticula are rare and often asymptomatic. In this case report a 58-year-old woman was diagnosed with an epiphrenic oesophageal diverticulum, which developed an oesophagobronchial fistula leading to a pulmonary abscess in the right lower lobe, septicaemia and acute respiratory failure. The patient underwent right lower lobectomy and the diverticulum was stapled off the oesophagus. The post-operative course was uneventful. This complication is only rarely described previously.

Empyema and lung abscess as complication of a perforated appendicitis in a pregnant woman.

INTRODUCTION: The development of empyema as a result of an intra-abdominal pathology is a rare condition. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present a 31-year-old woman at 28 weeks' gestation who was referred to our hospital with diagnosis of pneumonia with pleural effusion. She presented with signs of septicemia and fetal distress. A thoracic-abdominal-pelvic CT-scan showed a right pleural effusion with a retroperitoneal collection in contact with the pleural space. Due to her critical condition, immediate surgical exploration and pregnancy interruption was decided. The fetus was delivered by cesarean

Lung abscess and pleuritis caused by Lactobacillus rhamnosus in an immunocompetent patient.

A 79-year-old man consulted us because of left chest pain and fever ranging from 38.0 to 38.9 °C. A chest computed tomography scan showed a mass lesion (φ40 mm) in the left lingular segment, and inflammatory markers were elevated. He was admitted with a diagnosis of lung abscess, and panipenem/betamipron was administered at a dose of 2 g/day, after which the symptoms showed slight transient resolution. However, his body temperature increased again, to more than 39.0 °C, on the eighth day of hospitalization, and a chest radiograph suggested pleuritis as a complication. The antibiotics were chan

[Fever and lung abscesses in anorexia nervosa after infusion therapy].

A 26 year old female patient was admitted to our hospital because of septic temperatures and chills. In the patient's history renal insufficiency has been known for several years due to agenesia of the right and pyelonephritic renal congestion of the left kidney. Long lasting anorexia nervosa had been treated by psychotherapeutical interventions for years and when failing it necessitated repeated intravenous nutrition by central venous lines. The prominent symptom of the intravenously treated young woman was fever up to 39.7 degrees C and pneumonia, which was considered by the first treating c

Lung abscesses: US examination and US-guided transthoracic aspiration.

Examinations with ultrasound (US) and US-guided transthoracic aspiration were conducted in 35 patients to enable diagnosis of lung abscesses. Thirty-three of the abscesses (94%) were demonstrated at US, while two lesions were not depicted. At US, lung abscesses were depicted as hypoechoic lesions with irregular outer margins and an abscess cavity that was manifested as a hyperechoic ring. Twenty-five abscesses (71%) had local adhesion to parietal pleura (lesion-pleura symphysis). US-guided transthoracic needle aspiration of fluid from the abscess cavity was performed successfully in 31 of 33 p

Asymptomatic lung abscess of aspergillus in a female without previous lung diseases or immunocompromise: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pulmonary abscess usually results from bacterial or mycobacterium infection, but rarely from aspergillosis. Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis is usually found in a person with structural lung disease or immunocompromise. Here, we report a case of chronic lung abscess of aspergillosis without immunocompromise, structural lung diseases or even clinical symptoms. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old female was found a mass shadow with central liquid anechoic area in the apical posterior segment of the left upper lung lobe by chest computerized tomography for 1 month, but had no any

Lobectomy for cavitating lung abscess with haemoptysis: strategy for protecting the contralateral lung and also the non-involved lobe of the ipsilateral lung.

We describe the anaesthetic management of a patient undergoing lobectomy for cavitating lung abscess complicated by haemoptysis. Surgery for lung abscess is one of the absolute indications for the use of a double-lumen tube (DLT). Because pus or blood could impede fibreoptic-assisted DLT placement, a traditional, blind placement of the DLT was performed. To protect the uninvolved parts of the operated lung, ventilation of the lung with the abscess was not performed until the resection of the involved lobe had been completed.
