The use of polysaccharide Pickering emulsions for delivering bioactive compounds has attracted significant attention recently. However, the destabilizing effects of bioactive compounds on these emulsions remain largely unexplored, limiting the development of high-performance delivery systems. This study investigates how curcumin loading affects the stability and delivery performance of Lycium barbarum leaf polysaccharide Pickering emulsions. Curcumin loading significantly destabilizes these emulsions, reducing stability indices of mineral-containing emulsions from 92.3 %-94.8 % (unloaded) to 3

Deproteinization of crude polysaccharides in the residue from Lycium barbarum berries (LBBs) was conducted using the Sevag method. A Box-Behnken design based on single-factor experiments was employed to optimize the deproteinization technology. The results showed that the deproteinization conditions had significant effects on the extraction yield of polysaccharides and the residual protein content in Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP). The experimental data were fitted to a second-order polynomial equation, using multiple regression analysis with a high coefficient of determination (R2) val

The triclosan (TCS) is one of the most commonly detected organic pollutants in the sewage sludge. TCS could induce phytotoxicity in plants. Salicylic acid (SA) is a phenolic compound capable of enhancing plant growth and development. It is well documented that abiotic stress tolerance could be enhanced by exogenous application of SA. However, the regulatory mechanisms for functions of endogenous SA in plants' responses to xenobiotics stress remains unclear. Our results indicated that TCS suppressed plant growth by restricting photosynthesis, decreasing chlorophyll contents and inducing over pr

BACKGROUND: Two platyhelminths of biomedical and commercial significance are Schistosoma mansoni (blood fluke) and Fasciola hepatica (liver fluke). These related trematodes are responsible for the chronic neglected tropical diseases schistosomiasis and fascioliasis, respectively. As no vaccine is currently available for anti-flukicidal immunoprophylaxis, current treatment is mediated by mono-chemical chemotherapy in the form of mass drug administration (MDA) (praziquantel for schistosomiasis) or drenching (triclabendazole for fascioliasis) programmes. This overreliance on single chemotherapeut

Previous clinical and epidemiological studies have suggested that elevated plasma homocysteine (Hcy) levels increased the risk of Alzheime's disease (AD). Although the underlying mechanisms of its toxicity are elusive, it has been shown that Hcy damages neurons by inducing apoptosis, DNA fragmentation, and tau hyperphosphorylation. Wolfberry (Lycium barbarum) is a fruit that is known for its eye-protective and anti-aging properties in Asian countries. Previous studies from our laboratory have demonstrated that polysaccharides derived from wolfberry (LBA) have the ability to protect neurons fro

Lycium barbarum L. (Goji) berries are highly valued for their nutritional and nutraceutical properties, largely due to their sugar and amino acid content. This study analyzed organically cultivated berries from southern Tuscany (Italy), sampled across four ripening stages (July-November). Free sugars were measured over 3 years (2018-2020), and amino acids over two (2019-2020). Fully ripe berries (S4) exhibited high levels of glucose (80.2 ± 19.3 mg/g FW), fructose (75.5 ± 18.1 mg/g FW), and pectins (46.3 ± 16.1 mg/g FW), while sucrose remained low. Seasonal and interannual trends revealed prog

It is inevitable for polyphenols and polysaccharides to interact during food preparation. Modifications in microstructure can lead to changes in the physical and chemical properties of food systems, which in turn may influence the nutritional characteristics and functional activities of the food. Recent studies have shown that, in addition to traditional Chinese medicine compounds, certain natural polysaccharides and polyphenols exhibit significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These compounds are also associated with beneficial therapeutic effects for the prevention and treatm

In the present study, the effects of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPS) on immunoregulation and gut microbiota dysbiosis in cyclophosphamide (CTX)-induced mice were investigated to elucidate whether the attenuation of immunosuppression is related to the modulation of the gut microbiota. The results showed that administration of LBPS could protect immune organs (enhancing immune organ indexes and alleviating immune organ damage), enhance the production of immune-related cytokines (IL-2, IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α and IFN-γ) and prevent the hepatotoxicity in CTX-induced mice. Additionally, LBPS trea

Oxidative stress plays an important role in Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP), the main active ingredients extracted from the fruits of Lycium barbarum L., have been shown to be a potent antioxidant. In the present study, we investigated the protective effects, and the possible mechanism of action of LBP against 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced apoptosis in PC12 cells. Our data demonstrated that LBP significantly reversed the 6-OHDA-induced decrease in cell viability, prevented 6-OHDA-induced changes in condensed nuclei and decre

Dendritic cells (DCs) play a pivotal role in initiating robust T cell responses against tumors, yet effective strategies to enhance DC activation remain limited. This study explores the synergistic effects of Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) and the tumor cell lysate of endothelial progenitor cells (EPC-TCL) to boost DC activation and anti-tumor immunity. Using flow cytometry, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, western blot analysis, and in vivo tumor models, we demonstrate that the combination treatment significantly enhanced expression of co-stimulatory molecules (CD40, CD80, CD86, a

Respiratory viral infections, particularly those caused by SARS-CoV-2, induce severe pulmonary epithelial injury. Piezo1 channels, which participate in antiviral responses by regulating calcium influx to maintain intracellular calcium homeostasis, are widely expressed in respiratory epithelia. Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) are known to protect against SARS-CoV-2 by reducing viral entry and modulating immunity; however, their protective mechanisms in pulmonary epithelial cells have not been clarified. This study investigated the effect exerted by LBP on SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein (SP)-ind

The incorporation of functional plants rich in bioactive components or secondary metabolites as alternatives to growth promoters, such as antibiotics, in ruminant production is gaining momentum. Diet composition and structure are principal determinants of rumen microbial community structure, function, and the health status of ruminants. This study aimed to assess the impact of dietary Lycium barbarum byproducts on rumen fermentation parameters, digestive enzyme activity, microbial composition and proportion, and rumen health status in grazing sheep on sown pastures. The findings revealed that,

Lycium barbarum (goji berry) has long been consumed as a food, and its water-soluble polysaccharides (LBPs) are proposed as key bioactive constituents. Here, we evaluated three L. barbarum fractions in Caenorhabditis elegans and subsequently focused on purified LBPs, which showed the most consistent pro-longevity phenotype in preliminary screening. LBPs (700 μg/mL) increased mean lifespan by 20.67% (p < 0.01) and improved multiple healthspan-related outcomes, including locomotion, resistance to heat and oxidative stress, and reduced age-associated accumulation of lipofuscin and neutral lipids.

BACKGROUND: Gut microbiota dysbiosis is implicated in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). While Lycium barbarum polysaccharide-enriched extract (LBP) is known for its anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory effects, the precise microbial drivers and underlying mechanisms, including their connection to the T follicular helper (Tfh) cell/B cell axis, remain poorly defined.
PURPOSE: The aim of this research is to investigate changes in the gut microbiota of RA patients and CIA rats, and to evaluate whether LBP improves RA by modulating the gut microbiota.
METHOD: Gut microbiota composition was assessed v

Cadmium (Cd) exposure induces renal injury by triggering inflammation, cellular senescence, and fibrosis. BMAL1, a core component of the circadian clock, participates in the regulation of cellular stress responses. Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) and melatonin (MT) possess anti-ageing and anti-inflammatory activities. However, their effect on Cd-induced nephrotoxicity has not yet been elucidated. In this study, wild-type and Bmal1-deficient mice were exposed to Cd for 8 weeks. For protective effect experiments, mice were treated with Cd exposure alone or in combination with LBP and MT. Ou
