Twenty-three children consecutively undergoing colon interposition for esophageal replacement were evaluated with barium swallows, clinical interviews, and questionnaires. Fourteen patients underwent colon interposition because of caustic burns of the esophagus only or of the hypopharynx and esophagus. BACKGROUND: Lye ingestion or other esophageal trauma may require surgical reconstruction. The hypopharyngeal anastomosis during esophageal reconstruction is a technically demanding procedure with many nuances in approach. Patients often have a challenging post-operative course, and few regain the ability to tolerate a normal diet.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case series of three patients (2 colon interpositions and 1 gastric pull-up) who underwent esophageal reconstruction with a hypopharyngeal anastomosis at our institution from years 2017 to 2024, then review the literature.

Benign esophageal strictures may be caused by numerous disorders, but more than 90% of them are due to severe gastroesophageal reflux or ingestion of lye. BACKGROUND: Benign broncho-esophageal fistula (BEF) in the adult is rare, and occurs as a complication of inflammatory disorders, foreign body ingestion, or congenital anomalies. Nonspecific symptoms lead to a delay in diagnosis.
METHODS: The charts of 13 patients from 1960 to 2001 at the Massachusetts General Hospital were retrospectively reviewed.
