Multiple myeloma (MM) is a disease of terminally differentiated B lineage cells and thus alterations in circulating B cells may be anticipated. We studied peripheral blood B cells by flow cytometry in 45 untreated MM patients and compared the results to 25 age-matched controls. The total lymphocyte count and the absolute number and percentage of CD20+ cells were significantly decreased in MM patients. Analysis of the relative amounts of CD20+ cells expressing surface immunoglobulin kappa or lambda light chain isotype did not show either clonal B cell excess or light chain isotype suppression.

Interleukin-7 (IL-7) is known as a growth factor for pre B-cell and mature T-cells in human. But in leukemic cells, IL-7 effect is variously reported. To investigate the effect of IL-7 on the cells of childhood acute leukemia we used 3H-Thymidine assay. The distribution of thymus-derived (T) and bone marrow-derived (B) lymphocytes in 100 patients with psoriasis were studied by the rosetting techniques. Dicentrics were induced in human and rabbit lymphocytes in vitro by exposure to X-irradiation. The yields were compared with data reported in the literature. To elucidate the reasons for the different findings we have evaluated the parameters for the different models by maximum likelihood methods. From this analysis it can be concluded that the earlier claim of Bajerska and Liniecki [1] that both species have the same radiosensitivity must be discounted, and that their similarity was due to the abnormally low values these investigators observed in irradiated human lymphocytes.

Peripheral blood lymphocytes were investigated in 20 patients with acute viral hepatitis. For assessment of B lymphocytes the rosette test was carried out using sheep erythrocytes coated with antibodies and murine complement. The percentage and total number of E and EAC rosettes, as indicators of T and B lymphocytes respectively, were studied in the blood of subjects with multiple sclerosis (MS) and normals. MS patients in acute exacerbation were found to have a decrease in E rosettes and an increase in EAC rosettes. The relationship of these findings to the pathogenesis of MS is unclear; several possible pathogenetic implications are considered.
