BACKGROUND: Focal acantholytic dyskeratosis (FAD) and epidermolytic hyperkeratosis (EHK) are common incidental epidermal histologic findings within dysplastic nevi biopsies. Fourteen steroid cell tumors (SCTs) of the ovary were studied by immunohistochemistry including inhibin, calretinin, CD99, Melan A, androgen receptor, and AE1/3. Twelve tumors were primary and 2 were recurrent. Thirty-three metastatic melanoma patients were vaccinated according to a phase I-II study with an allogeneic melanoma cell line that was genetically modified by transfection with a plasmid containing the gene encoding human interleukin 2 (IL-2). Dysplastic nevi may occasionally display alarming histological features. One of these features is the presence of upward spread of melanocytes (pagetoid melanocytosis), identified either on routine histologic sections or after immunohistochemistry using one of the melanocytic markers.
