The psychology of spite and the measurement of spitefulness.

Spite is an understudied construct that has been virtually ignored within the personality, social, and clinical psychology literatures. This study introduces a self-report Spitefulness Scale to assess individual differences in spitefulness. The scale was initially tested on a large sample of 946 college students and cross-validated on a national sample of 297 adults. The scale was internally consistent in both samples. Factor analysis supported a 1-factor solution for the initial pool of 31 items. Item response theory analysis was used to identify the best performing of the original 31 items i

Self-reported and physiological stress indicators and the moderating role of the Dark Tetrad in violent and non-violent gaming.

Playing non-violent video games has been shown to reduce perceived levels of stress (Pallavicini et al., 2021). Does this effect also apply to violent game content? As findings suggest a particular preference for such games among people with certain personality traits, such as the Dark Tetrad (i.e., Machiavellianism, everyday sadism, subclinical psychopathy, and narcissism; e.g., Bonfá-Araujo et al., 2022; Greitemeyer, 2015; Greitemeyer & Sagioglou, 2017) do these traits influence the stress they feel? In the present lab experiment, potential stress-reducing effects of violent and non-violent

Construction and preliminary validation of a Psychopathic Boldness Scale in college and online samples.

The triarchic model posits that boldness, meanness, and disinhibition comprise psychopathy. Critics have questioned whether boldness is essential to psychopathy because boldness is minimally related to meanness and disinhibition and is associated with positive outcomes such as psychological health. The aim of the present study was to develop a Psychopathic Boldness Scale (PBS) that would be more closely associated with the other components of the triarchic model and would be associated with antisocial behaviors and maladaptive traits. Data from two college student samples (a test development s

A tri-directional examination of adolescent personality, perceived parenting, and economic and parental adversity contexts in influencing adolescent behavioral outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent personality is consistently linked to behavioral strengths and difficulties. However, most of this work is limited in that it does not consider personality beyond the Big Five or economic or parental adversity contexts. The Tri-Directional Framework of Parent and Offspring Traits and Outcomes highlights the collective influence of personality, parenting, and context on offspring behavioral outcomes. METHODS: Parent and adolescent cross-sectional data were collected from 2019 to 2021 as part of the Parents and Children Together project in the United Kingdom. Adolescent

An analysis of the relationship of selected personality traits on perceived stress in patients undergoing ablation for atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the correlation between selected personality traits and the level of perceived stress in patients undergoing catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. These arrhythmias are among the most common cardiac rhythm disorders. Previous research suggests that psychological factors such as stress and personality traits may correlate their development and clinical course. Understanding these relationships may improve the effectiveness of patient care, particularly in terms of psychological support during the perioperat

The Dark Triad and aggression among drug abstainers: a moderated mediation model of self-control and physical exercise.

BACKGROUND: Drug addiction is a significant public health concern, and aggression is common among people with drug addiction. Despite mounting evidence showing that the Dark Triad is a risk factor for aggression, the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this relationship are less known. This study tested the mediation effect of self-control in the association between the Dark Triad and aggression and whether this mediation was moderated by physical exercise. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in two compulsory drug rehabilitation centers in Nanning, China. A convenience

Manipulation tactics of patients with neurotic disorders in everyday life and during therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Vitiligo is a chronic skin condition characterised by progressive depigmentation. The visibility of skin lesions, their location, and perceived social stigma can exacerbate emotional stress and reduce life satisfaction. For this reason, the condition can significantly affect mental well-being and social functioning. AIM: The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between life satisfaction in individuals with vitiligo and the level of social support and degree of acceptance of illness. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study involved 215 individuals diagnosed with vitiligo. The

Effects of men's subtle and overt psychological abuse on low-income women.

A social influence approach to the psychological abuse of women (Marshall, 1994; 1996) was expanded and tested. Distinctions are made between obvious acts (e.g., verbal aggression, controlling behaviors), overt acts which are easily recognized and described, and subtle acts which are least likely to be recognized as psychologically abusive. Men's violence and sexual aggression, and overt (dominating acts, indifference, monitoring, discrediting) and subtle (undermining, discounting, isolating) psychological abuse were examined as they related to women's psychological and emotional state and per

Development and Validation of the Stalking and Obsessive Relational Intrusions Questionnaire (SORI-Q).

Stalking and obsessive relational intrusions both refer to a pervasive and unwanted pattern of pursuit behaviors, the former being a criminal offense evoking fear and a sense of menace in the victim, while the latter may be perceived as annoying or otherwise undesirable, but not necessarily fear inducing. While the individual and societal costs of stalking and obsessive relational intrusion are increasingly recognized, research regarding these behaviors and their consequences has been limited by measurement issues, as most studies have relied on questionnaires and checklists based on very limi

[Conspiracy theories, social polarization and crises].

OBJECTIVE: Social media facilitate the distribution of conspiracy theories. It is uncertain whether indeed the number of myths and also the number of those who appropriate myths has increased. Conspiracy theories have so far essentially been the subject of sociological and psychosociological research showing a general disposition to become infected irrespective of the topic of a myth. Are there specific psychopathological risk factors for becoming infected by conspiracy myths? Are there effective therapeutic or preventive measures? METHODS: A systematic search was carried out in PubMed using

Is Narcissism a Slow Life History Strategy Indicator?: The Answer Depends on the LHS Instrument.

The dark triad (DT) traits are differentially related to psychometrically assessed life history strategy (LHS), such that psychopathy is strongly associated with a faster LHS, whereas narcissism appears to be, if anything, a slow LHS indicator. However, the research supporting these generalizations has been based largely on undergraduate samples in which LHS has been measured using the Arizona Life History Battery (ALHB; or its short version the Mini-K), an instrument that arguably lacks adequate coverage of low-extroversion content linked to a slower LHS. In this study, 929 U.S. MTurk workers

Pandemic Leadership: Sex Differences and Their Evolutionary-Developmental Origins.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a global societal, economic, and social upheaval unseen in living memory. There have been substantial cross-national differences in the kinds of policies implemented by political decision-makers to prevent the spread of the virus, to test the population, and to manage infected patients. Among other factors, these policies vary with politicians' sex: early findings indicate that, on average, female leaders seem more focused on minimizing direct human suffering caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, while male leaders implement riskier short-term decisions, possibly aim

Lack of psychopathic character (Rorschach) in forensic psychiatric rapists.

Previous research using Rorschach is sparse in rapists. The aim of this study of 10 violent male forensic psychiatric rapists was to describe them on a set of Rorschach variables, which are assumed to reflect psychopathic character, in order to increase our understanding of rapists. The participants were involved in a long-term psychodynamic sexual offender treatment program. They were previously assessed on dyslexia and ADHD, and the results showed an over-representation of these disorders in this sample. Compared with normative samples, the participants scored significantly lower on three of

Impact of Dark Triad personality traits on COVID-19 vaccination uptake and prevention efforts: insights from the European Covid Survey (ECOS).

BACKGROUND: Even though the COVID-19 vaccination roll-out in general can be considered as one of the most successful public health campaigns in the history of medicine, general vaccination hesitancy has remained an issue of concern throughout the world. We add to a deeper understanding of vaccination hesitancy by identifying what drives primary vaccination and booster uptake, as well as adherence to simple preventive measures such as physical distancing by investigating the role of Dark Triad personality traits, i.e. Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy. METHODS: We investigate data

Assessing risk for sexual recidivism: some proposals on the nature of psychologically meaningful risk factors.

Risk assessment and treatment for sexual offenders should focus on individual characteristics associated with recidivism risk. Although it is possible to conduct risk assessments based purely on empirical correlates, the most useful evaluations also explain the source of the risk. In this review, the authors propose that the basic requirements for a psychologically meaningful risk factor are (a) a plausible rationale that the factor is a cause of sexual offending and (b) strong evidence that it predicts sexual recidivism. Based on the second of these criteria, the authors categorize potential

The manipulative patient.

"Manipulative" is a popular but often misused description of behavior seen in some patients who come to psychiatric attention. The authors suggest a definition of "manipulation" which can impart helpful information about symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. They survey the differential diagnosis of manipulative behavior and consider specific treatment strategies.

Human trafficking: what psychiatric nurses should know to help children and adolescents.

Psychiatric nurses are in key positions to identify and stop human trafficking, as well as aid its survivors. The combination of emotional trauma, sexual violence, and physical injuries experienced by these victims leads to high rates of posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety. To detect human trafficking, it is important to identify the salient risk factors of homelessness and runaway history. This article offers key questions to help identify victims, as well as web-based resources.

Drawing the line: a case study of ambivalence in sibling support for adults with complex needs.

The purpose of this article is to illuminate the dynamics of sibling group support when one sibling has complex needs accompanied by difficult behaviors. A case study of sibling support for a twenty-year-old woman with a disability, a mental health issue, and addictions, drawn from the perspectives of her full brother, her half-brother, and their mother, is presented. The brothers express ambivalence between devotion to supporting their sister and limits to the support they feel able to provide. The limits the brothers place on their support allow them to adhere to their values, preserve their

The influence of past experiences, psychological dysfunction, and problematic mentalities: An investigation into the comprehensive nature of drink-driving deterrence.

INTRODUCTION: Despite ongoing efforts to deter drink-driving, it remains a significant contributor to fatal vehicle crashes. This study aimed to investigate the influence of at-risk psychological traits, alcohol-related experiences, and problematic mentalities towards the deterrence of drink-driving. METHOD: An online survey was shared with a sample of Australians who use alcohol (N = 597), and the responses were analyzed using cluster, comparative, and correlational-based analyses. Two K means cluster analyses were independently conducted, and each exhibited three unique clusters, according

Self-protective organization in children with conversion and somatoform disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Two centuries of clinical observations have suggested that conversion symptoms are associated with strong emotions or situations that threaten the individual's physical or psychological integrity. This study tested the hypothesis that childhood conversion reactions reflect the motor-sensory components of two distinct emotional responses (one inhibitory, one excitatory) that develop as adaptations to recurring threats within intimate relationships. METHOD: Emotional responses to interpersonal threats were assessed in 28 children with conversion disorders using Dynamic-Maturational-M
