Norovirus infection in children with acute gastroenteritis, Madagascar, 2004-2005.

Of 237 children with acute gastroenteritis in Antananarivo, Madagascar, during May 2004-May 2005, 14 ( 6%) were infected with norovirus. Seasonality (November-December peak) was detected. Reverse transcription-PCR identified GII as the most common genogroup. GIs belonged to GI.1, GI.3, and GI.4. Noroviruses in Madagascar show extensive genetic diversity.

Schistosoma haematobium infection in western Madagascar: morbidity determined by ultrasonography.

To assess the morbidity related to Schistosoma haematobium infection in western Madagascar, an ultrasonographic examination was performed of 574 inhabitants > 5 years old in a village in an old-established endemic area where no prior systematic antischistosomal treatment had been given. The overall prevalence of infection was 75.9% and the geometric mean egg count of positive individuals was 36 eggs/10 mL of urine. Recent haematuria had been experienced by 31.8% of individuals. Echographic abnormalities of the urinary tract were present in 50.5% of individuals: they were more frequent in males

Tropical cyclone FANTALA's three turnbacks in the northeast of Madagascar Island.

The unique Tropical cyclone (TC) Fantala appeared in the central Indian Ocean (12.4°S, 73.5°E) at 00Z on April 11 in 2016 and moved northwestward along the northeast of Madagascar at 18 Z on April 15. Then, two incomprehensible turnbacks formed a unique TC track. The dynamic mechanisms of the three turnbacks were first studied based on remote sensing and multisource reanalysis data. The results reveal that the wind field with upper divergence and lower convergence promotes the development of Fantala. The anticyclone high pressure on the middle level atmosphere is an important factor for TC tur

Prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis and other helminths in four districts of Madagascar.

BACKGROUND: Estimation of prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection is required in endemic areas, in order to identify areas in need of control programmes. Data on prevalence of strongyloidiasis in Madagascar are scant. Aim of this work was to estimate prevalence of S. stercoralis in four districts of Madagascar. METHODS: Fecal and serum samples collected in the context of a previous study on schistosomiasis were tested with S. stercoralis real-time PCR and serology, respectively. A multiplex real-time PCR for Ascaris lumbricoides, Ancylostoma duodenalis, Necator americanus, and Trich

The 2017 plague outbreak in Madagascar: Data descriptions and epidemic modelling.

From August to November 2017, Madagascar endured an outbreak of plague. A total of 2417 cases of plague were confirmed, causing a death toll of 209. Public health intervention efforts were introduced and successfully stopped the epidemic at the end of November. The plague, however, is endemic in the region and occurs annually, posing the risk of future outbreaks. To understand the plague transmission, we collected real-time data from official reports, described the outbreak's characteristics, and estimated transmission parameters using statistical and mathematical models. The pneumonic plague

Evaluation of the influenza sentinel surveillance system in Madagascar, 2009-2014.

PROBLEM: Evaluation of influenza surveillance systems is poor, especially in Africa. APPROACH: In 2007, the Institut Pasteur de Madagascar and the Malagasy Ministry of Public Health implemented a countrywide system for the prospective syndromic and virological surveillance of influenza-like illnesses. In assessing this system's performance, we identified gaps and ways to promote the best use of resources. We investigated acceptability, data quality, flexibility, representativeness, simplicity, stability, timeliness and usefulness and developed qualitative and/or quantitative indicators for ea

Environmental influences on the skin microbiome of humans and cattle in rural Madagascar.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The skin harbors a dynamic community of microorganisms, where contact with humans, other animals and the environment can alter microbial communities. Most research on the human skin microbiome features Western populations living in hygienic conditions, yet these populations have vastly different patterns of environmental contact than the majority of people on Earth, including those living in developing countries. METHODOLOGY: We studied skin microbial communities of humans and cattle (zebu) in rural Madagascar to investigate how zebu ownership affects microbial comp

Chromoblastomycosis and sporotrichosis, two endemic but neglected fungal infections in Madagascar.

Chromoblastomycosis and sporotrichosis are endemic fungal infections of tropical and subtropical regions, including Madagascar. The causal fungi develop in the soil or on plants and infect humans through wounds, either directly (wounding by the plant, through thorns, for example), or through the contact of an existing wound with contaminated soil. For this reason, the lesions predominantly occur on the limbs, and these fungi principally infect people working outside with bare hands and/or feet. The subcutaneous lesions of chromoblastomycosis are initially nodular, subsequently becoming warty,

Detection in and circulation of Bluetongue virus among domestic ruminants in Madagascar.

So far, no published data was available concerning the circulation of Bluetongue virus (BTV) in Madagascar. During a survey on Rift Valley Fever, we were able to detect a virus belonging to BTV. Therefore, we conducted a study aiming at characterizing molecularly the BTV isolated and assess the importance of circulation of BTV in Madagascar. A total of 4393 sera from ruminants selected randomly by stratification and sampled in 30 districts of Madagascar were tested for BTV. Moreover, 175 cattle were followed during 11 months. Phylogenetic analyses were performed from virus isolated from unfed

High IgE sensitization to maize and rice pollen in the highlands of Madagascar.

INTRODUCTION: Maize and rice are two crops constituting the main food supply in many under-developed and developing countries. Despite the large area devoted to the culture, the sensitization to the pollen from these plants is reported to be low and often considered as an occupational allergy. METHODS: Sixty five Malagasy pollen allergic patients were clinically and immunochemically investigated with regard to maize and rice pollen allergens. Pollen extracts were electrophoretically separated in 1 and 2 dimensions and IgE and IgG reactivities detected upon immunoblotting. RESULTS: When explo

[Recrudescence and geographic extension of the plague in Madagascar from 1980 to 1999].

Plague was introduced to Madagascar in 1898, and it has been characterized by a predominant distribution to the central highlands in the following decades. An increase of plague cases has been observed in the past 20 years, in particular in the capital, Antananarivo, and in the coastal town, Mahajanga, after long periods of silence in 28 and 63 years, respectively. A total of 2,982 confirmed or presumptive cases were reviewed in order to describe the changes in the epidemiological pattern of the disease from 1980 through 1999. The mean annual number of plague cases has increased from 33 during

Diagnosis of bubonic plague by PCR in Madagascar under field conditions.

The diagnostic value of a PCR assay that amplifies a 501-bp fragment of the Yersinia pestis caf1 gene has been determined in a reference laboratory with 218 bubo aspirates collected from patients with clinically suspected plague managed in a regional hospital in Madagascar. The culture of Y. pestis and the detection of the F1 antigen (Ag) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were used as reference diagnostic methods. The sensitivity of PCR was 89% (57 of 64) for the Y. pestis-positive patients, and 80.7% (63 of 78) for the F1 Ag-positive patients. The specificity of PCR for the culture

Neurocysticercosis: a major aetiological factor of late-onset epilepsy in Madagascar.

To assess the impact of cysticercosis on public health in Madagascar, we compared patients > 15 years with late-onset epilepsy to non-epileptic controls in a matched case-control study. The association between epilepsy and cysticercosis was studied by enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot (EITB) assay for antibodies specific to Taenia solium. The EITB assay was performed on 104 pairs of sera specimens and on 95 pairs of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens. Depending on whether we consider the results obtained from sera or from CSF, we obtain for the population attributable risk percent of c

[Presence of urinary Sm28GST antigen in Madagascar patients with Schistosomiasis mansoni].

Using an ELISA method, we quantitated the level of glutathion S-transferase 28 kDa (Sm28GST), specific of Schistosoma mansoni, in the urine of 13 malagasy patients. The presence of Sm28GST antigen has been demonstrated for the first time, in 8 patients (69%). No significant correlation could be found between antigen level and the parasitological burden in the feces. The use of an immunocapture ELISA technic on a larger number of samples will be necessary to assess if this test could be quantitative and reliable enough for the diagnosis or the follow up of patients infected with Schistosoma man
