Magic and cognition: a scoping review of empirical evidence on cognitive and neural processes.

INTRODUCTION: Magic, understood as a set of effects designed to produce experiences of impossibility, offers a distinctive methodological potential for cognitive science because it makes it possible to manipulate, with ecological validity, processes such as attention, perception, reasoning, and memory. Despite increasing research interest over the last two decades, the available evidence has not been systematically mapped across cognitive domains, methodological approaches, and the neural correlates underlying magic perception or processing. The aim of this scoping review was to map and synthe

A magical experience or a puzzle: how do people watch conjuring tricks?

Conjuring tricks often contain two components: The effect (an apparently impossible happening) and the method (the secret of the trick). Prior scales have assessed individuals' general liking for magic, but not examined their interest in the effect and method. This paper validates a new scale (Method-Effect Scale; MES) measuring people's preference for these two components and examines its relationship with several variables including a general liking for magic, wonder, pseudoscientific beliefs and thinking style. Adult participants (N = 922) completed an online survey containing the MES, Loat

Feared Self, Inferential Confusion, and Magical Ideation in Obsessive Compulsive Phenomena.

Recent literature suggests that the feared self, a version of self that one is afraid of becoming, is related to obsessive-compulsive (OC) phenomena. However, as this construct is not specific, the existence of the feared self itself does not fully explain why some people may develop obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) while others do not. This indicates that other constructs may play a role, in particular those that may influence the tendency of individuals endorsing negative imagined possibilities over reality-including inferential confusion and magical ideation. Inferential confusion is a r

The Magic Number 63 - Redefining the Geriatric Age for Massive Transfusion in Trauma.

INTRODUCTION: The arbitrary geriatric age cutoff of 65 may not accurately define older adults at higher risk of mortality following massive transfusion (MT). We sought to redefine a new geriatric age threshold for MT and understand its association with outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The 2013-2018 Trauma Quality Improvement Program database was queried for all adults who received ≥10 units of packed red blood cells (pRBCs) within 24 h of admission. A bootstrap analysis using multiple logistic regression established transfusion futility thresholds (TTs), where additional pRBCs no longer improv

Preliminary Examination of Sympathetic Magic as a Psychological Endophenotype for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Although sympathetic magic (SM) beliefs (i.e., irrational understanding of contagion transmission) are observed in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), it is unclear if such beliefs are psychological endophenotypes. Furthermore, predictors of SM beliefs in OCD remain unknown. Accordingly, the present study examined whether SM beliefs function as an endophenotype for OCD and whether perceived vulnerability to disease (PVD) contributes to SM beliefs. A sample of 30 individuals with OCD, 26 first-degree relatives, and 25 age-matched healthy controls completed self-report questionnaires and a SM t

Transanal irrigation: is it the magic intervention for bowel management in individuals with bowel dysfunction?

Historically, the use of colonic irrigation or transanal irrigation (TAI) has been viewed as an alternative therapy for the treatment of a wide variety of conditions not relating to bowel dysfunction, including nausea, fatigue, depression, headache, anxiety and rheumatism. However, these days it is viewed as an effective treatment in individuals who may present with bowel dysfunction and related symptoms of constipation and faecal incontinence. Such individuals would include people with neuropathic bowel disorders, conditions that affect sphincter control or bowel motility disorders. injury to

Sympathetic magic and gambling: adherence to the law of contagion varies with gambling severity.

This study assessed adherence to the law of contagion by 118 undergraduate students (39 males). Participants were students who played a slot machine game after viewing a prior player who seemed to be winning ("lucky" condition) or losing ("unlucky" condition). Adherence to the law of contagion was assessed by the selection of the coin holder used by a "lucky" prior player and the avoidance of the coin holder used by an "unlucky" prior player. Contagion varied directly with scores on the Problem Gambling Severity Index and scores on the Luck/Perseverance subscale of the Gamblers' Belief Questio

The clinical potential of the acyclic (and cyclic) nucleoside phosphonates: the magic of the phosphonate bond.

The use of the acyclic nucleoside phosphonates, starting with (S)-HPMPA as the prototype, yielded three clinically approved antiviral drugs, cidofovir for the treatment of CMV retinitis in AIDS patients, adefovir dipivoxil for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate for the treatment of HIV infections (AIDS) and HBV infections. This era has now grown to many more acyclic (and cyclic) nucleoside phosphonates (such as the "open ring" DAPy and Fd4A phosphonates) and alkoxyalkyl and phosphonoamidate prodrugs thereof, as well as new clinical applications, including ne

The subtle science: a systematic review of psilocybin magic mushroom and truffle microdosing.

INTRODUCTION: Microdosing psilocybin magic mushrooms (MM) and truffles has grown in popularity, but the evidence supporting reported benefits remains poorly characterized. The purpose of this systematic review was to synthesize the existing literature on microdosing psilocybin MM and truffles in adults to determine reported health effects and perceived benefits, motivations for use, dosing protocols and preparations, adverse events, and competing interests. METHODS: This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and was register

Magical contagion beliefs in psychopathology: A review of cognitive mechanisms and maintaining factors.

Magical contagion beliefs-the idea that harm, essence, or impurity can be transmitted symbolically through resemblance, association, contact, or thought-are observed across several mental health conditions, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), trauma-related disorders, eating disorders, and hoarding disorder. This narrative review synthesizes empirical evidence to clarify the emotional and cognitive mechanisms that activate and sustain these beliefs. We propose a theoretical model describing how characteristics of the perceived contaminant (contact, proximity, association, emotional

Art and psychiatry in the 21st century: here's to more messy - and magical - entanglements.

In a volatile world, during a time of multiple crises and amid a projected upsurge in mental illnesses as an aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, now is a critical time to consider how art and psychiatry can entangle with each other. Submissions like that of Lily Aston can create new spaces for conversation, reflection and constructive collisions. This can help disrupt and extend the state of psychiatry, management of psychiatric services, and education and training in mental healthcare, and advance how we understand other bodies and minds around us, and how knowledge can be created.

The role of magical thinking in hallucinations. Comparisons of clinical and non-clinical groups.

BACKGROUND: Magical thinking consists of accepting the possibility that events that, according to the causal concepts of a culture, cannot have any causal relationship, but might somehow nevertheless have one. Magical thinking has been related to both obsessive-compulsive disorder and schizophrenia. AIMS: The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of magical thinking in hallucinations of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. METHODS: Four groups were recruited for this purpose from a clinical population (hallucinating schizophrenic patients, patients diagnosed with psychoses who

Indomethacin for post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis prophylaxis: is it the magic bullet?

Acute pancreatitis is a common complication of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Pancreatic duct stent insertion after ERCP has been widely accepted as the standard of care for the prevention of this complication in high-risk patients. Unfortunately, the placement of pancreatic stents requires higher level of endoscopic expertise and is not always feasible due to anatomic considerations. Therefore, effective non-invasive pharmacologic prophylaxis remains appealing, particularly if it is inexpensive, easily administered, has a low risk side effect profile and is widely avai
