Magnetic resonance imaging in pachydermodactyly.

The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of a teenage boy with pachydermodactyly are described. The findings include fusiform soft tissue swelling around the proximal interphalangeal joints of the hands, with sparing of the tendons and ligaments. There was no capsular involvement and no evidence of periosteal reaction.

[Magnetic resonance in osteoarticular exploration].

A major role in imaging of the locomotor apparatus. Today, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has replaced invasive explorations such as arthrography or saccoradiculography. However, x-rays and scans must often be performed beforehand. Indisputable indications. MRI is crucial in affections of the spongy bone (tumours, osteonecrosis, algodystrophy, fatigue fractures.) and the soft parts (tumours, myositis, fasciitis.). Depending on the situation. The indications for MRI must be weighed versus a scan or arthro-scan in many situations. In the case of strong suspicion of an internal articular disord

Direct magnetic resonance arthrography.

Magnetic resonance (MR) arthrography has gained increasing popularity as a diagnostic tool in the assessment of intra-articular derangements. Its role has been studied extensively in the shoulder, but it also has been explored in the hip, elbow, knee, wrist and ankle. This article reviews the current role of direct MR arthrography in several major joints, with consideration of pertinent anatomy, techniques and applications.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation and epilepsy.

Epileptic conditions are characterized by an altered balance between excitatory and inhibitory influences at the cortical level. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) provides a noninvasive evaluation of separate excitatory and inhibitory functions of the cerebral cortex. In addition, repetitive TMS (rTMS) can modulate the excitability of cortical networks. We review the different ways that TMS has been used to investigate pathophysiological mechanisms and effects of antiepileptic drugs in patients with epilepsy and epileptic myoclonus. The safety of different TMS techniques is discussed too

Virtual magnetic resonance colonography.

Colorectal cancer screening has vast potential. Beyond considerations for cost and diagnostic accuracy, the effectiveness of any colorectal screening strategy will be dependent on the degree of patient acceptance. Magnetic resonance (MR) colonography has been shown to be accurate regarding the detection of clinically relevant colonic polyps exceeding 10 mm in size, with reported sensitivity and specificity values exceeding 95%. To further increase patient acceptance, strategies for fecal tagging have recently been developed. By modulating the signal of fecal material to be identical to the sig

Coronary magnetic resonance angiography.

Coronary magnetic resonance angiography (CMRA) is a technique in clinical evolution. Current clinical applications include assessment for coronary anomalies, aneurysms, bypass graft patency, and, in experienced centers, the exclusion of proximal and multivessel coronary artery disease (CAD). As local expertise increases and more extensive multicenter data become available, additional applications will be established. CMRA promises to supplement and in some cases obviate the need for X-ray contrast angiography, and to expand our understanding of the pathophysiology of CAD.

[Magnetic load in pneumonia patients].

The change of bronchial permeability under magnetic load has been investigated in 122 patients with pneumonia 18 to 60 years of age. Two variants of bronchial reaction and a correlation between the time to onset, severity of the reaction and bronchial inflammation have been found. Magnetic load proved able to reveal high magnetic sensitivity of the organism. Peculiarities of pneumonia clinical course and outcome in patients with high magnetic sensitivity show the necessity of additional medical and prophylactic measures.

Dynamic magnetic resonance imaging.

Among the devices helping with an accurate diagnosis, neither MRI nor arthroscopy is perfect; both delineate pathology in the knee joint with reasonable sensitivity and specificity. MRI, as a noninvasive and nonionizing modality, has made a significant contribution to the understanding of musculoskeletal disturbances. Static images through the patellofemoral joint in different degrees of flexion reveal only the degree of patellar tilt or subluxation, parameters that can be measured also on the axial view of conventional radiography. The accuracy of patellar position on static axial MRI is limi

Magnetic resonance evaluation of the pericardium.

Magnetic resonance (MR) is well suited to imaging the pericardium. High resolution images synchronized with the cardiac cycle can be obtained in any plane. The wide field of view allows additional anatomical and functional information to be obtained from adjacent structures such as the aorta, pleura, lungs and mediastinum. MR is particularly useful in cases of pericardial constriction without an associated effusion, in patients with complex or loculated pericardial effusions and in pericardial tumours. In this article we illustrate the characteristic MR features of a variety of pericardial pat

Magnetic resonance imaging of the chest.

Thoracic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has recently undergone important advances, and newer applications could expand the role of thoracic MRI. Existing and developing MRI techniques are described and compared to other imaging techniques with regard to imaging various thoracic regions, structures, and diseases. After an initial discussion of MRI techniques, the role of thoracic MRI in evaluation of the thoracic arteries and veins is described. The next section focuses on specific anatomic regions; namely, the lung, mediastinum, pleural space, thoracic inlet, and diaphragm. The final section

Magnetic resonance of coronary arteries.

Magnetic resonance coronary angiography (MRCA) is developing rapidly as a non-invasive method for assessing coronary artery anatomy and function. This article reviews the issues involved in MRCA and the methods used to overcome them. The current clinical applications for MRCA are then summarised with reference to published clinical studies.

Magnetic resonance imaging of the wrist.

Optimal magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the wrist requires a high field strength magnet and a dedicated wrist coil to achieve high-resolution images. Using current MR sequences, detailed images of articular cartilage and the supporting ligaments and tendons can be obtained. Evaluation of the triangular fibrocartilage as well as the extrinsic and intrinsic ligaments of the wrist is possible with thin-slice three-dimensional volumetric gradient recalled sequences. Fast inversion recovery sequences, used to achieve fat suppression in peripheral joints such as the wrist, allow for detection of

Magnetic resonance imaging in dentistry.

MR imaging has found a place in the imaging sciences. These images are unique in that no ionizing radiation is used, the same tissues may or may not have different appearances with different machine settings, a unique set of terms is used to describe the findings in the images, and these findings can be analyzed with the view of obtaining more diagnostic information not readily available with any other imaging modality. Cases have been presented to help demonstrate differences in T1-weighted and T2-weighted sequences as well as the value of contrast material. Additionally, plain film and CT vi

Magnetic resonance pancreatography (MRP).

Magnetic resonance pancreatography (MRP) is a technique that permits accurate evaluation of the pancreatic duct without instrumentation, contrast material administration, or ionizing radiation. Because MRP is entirely noninvasive, MRP avoids complications associated with endoscopic retrograde pancreatography (ERP) such as pancreatitis and perforation. MRP allows for the noninvasive evaluation of patients with acute and chronic pancreatitis, variant anatomy of the pancreatic duct, pancreatic duct trauma, and pancreatic neoplasia. MRP yields diagnostic information in the setting of a failed or i

[Artifacts in magnetic resonance angiography].

Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) has become a major tool in the management of vascular diseases. However, many artifacts that may lead to misinterpretations are encountered with this imaging modality. The purpose of this paper was to enumerate, explain and illustrate each kind of artifact encountered with "time of flight" or "phase contrast" imaging methods. For each artifact, we tried to provide one or several techniques to minimize its consequences.
