BACKGROUND: Magnetic nanoparticle thermal therapy (MNTT) can localize heat within tumors, but non-uniform nanoparticle distribution can limit thermal dose coverage. Spatially confined MNTT (SC-MNTT) addresses this limitation by using a static magnetic field (SMF) to suppress heating outside a selected field-free region (FFR). However, SC-MNTT platforms require improved FFR steering and closed-loop temperature control.
PURPOSE: This study developed and validated a low-cost, four-permanent-magnet SC-MNTT platform for spatially selective heating, dynamic FFR steering, and controlled thermal dose

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are appealing materials as assistant to resolve environmental pollution issues and as recyclable catalysts for the oxidative degradation of resistant contaminants. Moreover, they can significantly influence the advancement of medical applications for imaging, diagnostics, medication administration, and biosensing. On the other hand, due to unique features, excellent biocompatibility, high curie temperatures and low cytotoxicity of the Iron-based nanoparticles, they have received increasing attention in recent years. Biomimetic magnetic nanoparticles (BMNPs) mediated by MamC have proven to be photothermal agents able to allow an optimized cytotoxicity against tumoral cells when used simultaneously as drug nanotransporters and as hyperthermia agents. However, it remains unclear whether BMNPs need to be internalized by the cells and/or if there is a threshold for internal Fe concentration for the photothermal therapy to be effective. In this study, three different situations for photothermal treatments have been simulated to disentangle the effect of BMNPs cell uptake on cell viability after photothermal tre

Super-paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs/Fe3O4) were synthesized in aqueous medium under a nitrogen atmosphere. These particles were made water-dispersible by cladding them with tannic acid (TA). The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized for their size and surface charge using HRTEM and zetasizer. It was found that the size of the particles formed was around 15 nm with almost spherical morphology and negative surface charge. Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) data attributed a super-paramagnetic nature to these nanoparticles. The photo-thermal dynamics of these magnetite (Fe

Jacobsite is a relatively rare mineral of composition MnFe2O4, found in Urandi (Bahia State) in Brazil. It is also a common species in the deep-sea manganese nodules, attracting the interest of many mineral-extracting companies. Because of its spinel constitution similar to magnetite, Jacobsite is commonly called a manganese-ferrite. However, the manganese/iron content may vary substantially according to its origin, demanding specific studies in each case. The Jacobsite mineral inspired our laboratory synthesis of the analogous manganese ferrite nanoparticles. The direct synthesis by the copre

Although nanoparticle-enhanced biosensors have been extensively researched, few studies have systematically characterized the roles of nanoparticles in enhancing biosensor functionality. This paper describes a successful new method in which DNA binds directly to iron oxide nanoparticles for use in an optical biosensor. A wide variety of nanoparticles with different properties have found broad application in biosensors because their small physical size presents unique chemical, physical, and electronic properties that are different from those of bulk materials. Of all nanoparticles, magnetic na

INTRODUCTION: In the field of drug delivery, controlling the release of therapeutic substances at localized targets has become a primary focus of medical research, especially in the field of cancer treatment. Magnetic nanoparticles are one of the most promising drug carriers thanks to their biocompatibility and (super)paramagnetic properties. These properties allow for the combination between imaging modalities and specific release of drugs at target sites using either local stimulus (i.e. pH, conjugation of biomarkers, …) or external stimulus (i.e. external magnetic field).

Cell labeling and tracking are becoming increasingly important in the fields of stem cell transplantation. To track the migration and distribution of the implanted cells is critical for understanding the beneficial effects of stem cell therapy. The aim of this study is to synthesize new superparamagnetic nanoparticles and investigate the feasibility of magnetic labeling of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Monodisperse hydrophobic magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were prepared through high temperature decomposition of Fe(acac)3 and a long-chain alcohol. The nanoparticles were further m

Hyperthermia using magnetic nanoparticles is a promising cancer therapy that locally destroys tumors and induces antitumor immunity by releasing tumor antigens from dying cells. However, magnetic hyperthermia in malignant melanomas with poor immunogenicity and an immunosuppressive microenvironment remains challenging. Here, all-in-one magnetic nanoparticles (αPD-L1/CpG@MCL) are developed for thermo-immunotherapy that enables hyperthermia with magnetic nanoparticles and immunotherapy with anti-PD-L1 antibody and CpG to improve the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Magnetic hyperthermia

Reducing nanoparticle (NP) dosage for hyperthermia therapy has remained a great challenge. In this work, efficiencies of alternating current (AC) magnetic field and near-infrared (NIR) heating are simultaneously enhanced by Zn and Co co-doping of magnetite NPs. The optimum magnetic anisotropy for maximized loss power under each magnetic field is achieved by tuning the doping concentration. The specific loss power of Zn0.3 Co0.08 Fe2.62 O4 @SiO2 NPs reaches 2428 W g-1 under an AC field of 27 kA m-1 at 430 kHz; 12 296 W g-1 under NIR laser irradiation at 808 nm and 2.5 W cm-2 ; and an unpreceden

Combining durable colloidal stability with strong magnetic heating in a single aqueous ferrofluid is a long-standing obstacle in biomedical hyperthermia, because the coating that disperses the nanoparticles typically weakens their magnetic response. Aqueous magnetite ferrofluids must therefore satisfy three requirements that are mediated by one nanoparticle surface and are consequently difficult to reconcile such as durable colloidal stability, retention of the magnetic response and efficient field-driven heating. Here, magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were synthesized by alkaline co-precipitat

Metastable ferrihydrite nanoparticles and clay minerals always coexist as heteroaggregates in nature due to their abundance, opposite charge, and large interface energy. However, the impact of clay minerals on the transformation of ferrihydrite under anoxic conditions remains elusive. This study systematically investigated the effect of distinct clay minerals on the Fe(II)-catalyzed transformation of ferrihydrite and clarifying the underlying nanoscale mechanisms for the first time. Our results demonstrated that clay minerals could affect the production and recrystallization of labile Fe(III)

Nanoparticles have gained increased attention due to the prospection of drug delivery at target sites, thus limiting the systemic effects of the drugs. Their efficiency was further improved by adding special carriers such as magnetite (Fe3O4). It is one of the extensively used oxides of iron for both pharmaceutical and biomedical applications owing to its ease of preparation and biocompatibility. In this work, Gemcitabine magnetic nanoparticles were prepared using Fe3O4 and chitosan as the primary ingredients. Optimization was accomplished by Box-Behnken Design and factor interactions were eva

Detection of single-nucleotide mutations (SNPs) in the genome of infectious agents is one of the ways to identify their drug-resistant strains. Antibiotic-resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) impede advances in the fight against the spread of tuberculosis. Diagnostic tools exist for both MTB itself and its drug-resistant strains, most of which are technically complex, resource-intensive, and time-consuming. This paper presents the development of a colorimetric test system, requiring no expensive equipment, for the rapid and accurate determination of the SNPs associated with dr
