Effects of Independent Component Analysis on Magnetoencephalography Source Localization in Pre-surgical Frontal Lobe Epilepsy Patients.

Objective: Magnetoencephalography source imaging (MSI) of interictal epileptiform discharges (IED) is a useful presurgical tool in the evaluation of drug-resistant frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) patients. Yet, failures in MSI can arise related to artifacts and to interference of background activity. Independent component analysis (ICA) is a popular denoising procedure but its clinical application remains challenging, as the selection of multiple independent components (IC) is controversial, operator dependent, and time consuming. We evaluated whether selecting only one IC of interest based on its

Functional brain development in growth-restricted and constitutionally small fetuses: a fetal magnetoencephalography case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: Fetal magnetoencephalography records fetal brain activity non-invasively. Delayed brain responses were reported for fetuses weighing below the tenth percentile. To investigate whether this delay indicates delayed brain maturation resulting from placental insufficiency, this study distinguished two groups of fetuses below the tenth percentile: growth-restricted fetuses with abnormal umbilical artery Doppler velocity (IUGR) and constitutionally small-for-gestational-age fetuses with normal umbilical artery Doppler findings (SGA) were compared with fetuses of adequate weight for gestat

Neural responses to auditory stimulus deviance under threat of electric shock revealed by spatially-filtered magnetoencephalography.

Stimulus novelty or deviance may be especially salient in anxiety-related states due to sensitization to environmental change, a key symptom of anxiety disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We aimed to identify human brain regions that show potentiated responses to stimulus deviance during anticipatory anxiety. Twenty participants (14 men) were presented a passive oddball auditory task in which they were exposed to uniform auditory stimulation of tones with occasional deviations in tone frequency, a procedure that elicits the mismatch negativity (MMN) and its magnetic counter

Recognition of Japanese kanji words in children with specific learning disorders: a preliminary study using magnetoencephalography.

INTRODUCTION: In Western countries, reading disorders are believed to be caused by phonological processing problems. Conversely, Japanese children with developmental dyslexia (DD) and developmental dysgraphia often have difficulty learning kanji that are ideographic characters. It is believed that kanji learning and alphabet learning have different pathologies, as the latter uses phonetic character. In this study, we aimed to clarify the characteristics of kanji word recognition in Japanese children with DD and developmental dysgraphia using magnetoencephalography with high spatial resolution.

Association of a DASH diet and magnetoencephalography in dementia-free adults with different risk levels of Alzheimer's disease.

This study explored how adherence to the DASH diet relates to electrophysiological measures in individuals at varying Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk due to family history (FH). There were 179 dementia-free subjects. DASH index was calculated, and participants were classified into different DASH adherence groups. Tertiles of relative alpha power in default mode network (DMN) regions were calculated. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to examine the association. Lower DASH adherence was associated with decreased odds of higher relative alpha power in the DMN, observed across the en

Central executive network-related neuromagnetic abnormalities in chronic and episodic migraine: a resting-state magnetoencephalography study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic migraine (CM) is more disabling than episodic migraine (EM), but the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying migraine chronification remain incompletely understood. We investigated central executive network (CEN)-related neuromagnetic abnormalities in CM and EM. METHODS: The original cohort included 22 patients with CM, 20 with EM, and 25 healthy controls (HCs). An independent validation cohort included 30 patients with CM and 30 with EM. Source-space analyses focused on 10 predefined CEN-related regions from the Desikan-Killiany atlas. Relative power spectral density (PS

Alzheimer's disease and memantine effects on NMDA-receptor blockade: non-invasive in vivo insights from magnetoencephalography.

To accelerate new treatments for Alzheimer's disease, there is the need for human pathophysiological biomarkers that are sensitive to treatment and disease mechanisms. In this proof-of-concept study, we assess new biophysical models of non-invasive human MEG imaging to test the pharmacological and disease modulation of NMDA-receptor inhibition. Magnetoencephalography was recorded during an auditory mismatch negativity paradigm from (1) neurologically-healthy people on memantine or placebo (n = 19, placebo-controlled crossover design); (2) people with Alzheimer's disease at baseline and 16-mont

A novel approach to understanding Parkinsonian cognitive decline using minimum spanning trees, edge cutting, and magnetoencephalography.

Graph theory-based approaches are efficient tools for detecting clustering and group-wise differences in high-dimensional data across a wide range of fields, such as gene expression analysis and neural connectivity. Here, we examine data from a cross-sectional, resting-state magnetoencephalography study of 89 Parkinson's disease patients, and use minimum-spanning tree (MST) methods to relate severity of Parkinsonian cognitive impairment to neural connectivity changes. In particular, we implement the two-sample multivariate-runs test of Friedman and Rafsky (Ann Stat 7(4):697-717, 1979) and find

Integration of functional brain information into stereotactic irradiation treatment planning using magnetoencephalography and magnetic resonance axonography.

PURPOSE: To minimize the risk of neurologic deficit after stereotactic irradiation, functional brain information was integrated into treatment planning. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Twenty-one magnetoencephalography and six magnetic resonance axonographic images were made in 20 patients to evaluate the sensorimotor cortex (n = 15 patients, including the corticospinal tract in 6), visual cortex (n = 4), and Wernicke's area (n = 2). One radiation oncologist was asked to formulate a treatment plan first without the functional images and then to modify the plan after seeing them. The pre- and postmodif

Machine Learning on Magnetoencephalography Data Yields Generalizable Low-Dimensional Neural Fingerprints That Distinguish Individuals Across Task Conditions.

Individual brains are unique in structure and function. Functional differences are captured by neural fingerprints, which reflect individual differences in behavior and cognition as well as group-level changes related to neurodegenerative diseases. Most research efforts so far have focused on fingerprints comprising full functional connectomes. However, the high dimensionality of the connectomes can increase computational load and impede performance of machine learning methods in potential applications. A low-dimensional alternative that retains individual features of the full connectomes woul

Methodological advances in encoding models of brain: Applying temporal response functions to magnetoencephalography for written text perception.

Recent advancements in cognitive neuroscience have expanded the tools available to study language processing beyond traditional event-related potentials (ERPs), and introduced new methods, such as the Temporal Response Function (TRF). TRF allows a nuanced investigation of brain dynamics by modeling neural responses as a convolution of stimuli with self-optimized TRF curves. While TRF has been successfully applied in auditory speech research, its application to written language processing remains unexplored. In this study, we introduce a novel approach to TRF analysis in reading using magnetoen

Local and network changes after multichannel transcranial direct current stimulation using magnetoencephalography in patients with refractory epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Non-invasive neuromodulation techniques, particularly transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), are promising for drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), though the mechanisms of their efficacy remain unclear. This study aims to (i) investigate tDCS neurophysiological mechanisms using a personalized multichannel protocol with magnetoencephalography (MEG) and (ii) assess post-tDCS changes in brain connectivity, correlating them with clinical outcomes. METHODS: Seventeen patients with focal DRE underwent three cycles of tDCS over five days, each consisting of 40-minute stimulations targ

Data-Driven Topological Filtering Based on Orthogonal Minimal Spanning Trees: Application to Multigroup Magnetoencephalography Resting-State Connectivity.

In the present study, a novel data-driven topological filtering technique is introduced to derive the backbone of functional brain networks relying on orthogonal minimal spanning trees (OMSTs). The method aims to identify the essential functional connections to ensure optimal information flow via the objective criterion of global efficiency minus the cost of surviving connections. The OMST technique was applied to multichannel, resting-state neuromagnetic recordings from four groups of participants: healthy adults (n = 50), adults who have suffered mild traumatic brain injury (n = 30), typical

Decreased α event-related synchronization in the left posterior temporal cortex in schizophrenia: a magnetoencephalography-beamformer study.

Alpha rhythm is one of the most prominent electromagnetic changes in the brain, and electroencephalography (EEG) alpha reactivity disturbance may sometimes represent an early sign of cerebral dysfunction. Although magnetoencephalography (MEG) has a better spatial resolution than EEG, it has not extensively been used to explore alpha-power change deficits in schizophrenia as a possible neurophysiological marker of the disease. The purpose of this study was to use MEG to identify abnormalities in alpha synchronization induced by eye-closing in schizophrenia patients compared to healthy controls,

Abnormal thalamocortical dynamics may be altered by deep brain stimulation: using magnetoencephalography to study phantom limb pain.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is used to alleviate chronic pain. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG) to study the mechanisms of DBS for pain is difficult because of the artefact caused by the stimulator. We were able to record activity over the occipital lobe of a patient using DBS for phantom limb pain during presentation of a visual stimulus. This demonstrates that MEG can be used to study patients undergoing DBS provided control stimuli are used to check the reliability of the data. We then asked the patient to rate his pain during and off DBS. Correlations were found between these ratings an

Distinct contrast response functions in striate and extra-striate regions of visual cortex revealed with magnetoencephalography (MEG).

OBJECTIVE: To spatially and temporally characterise the cortical contrast response function to pattern onset stimuli in humans. METHODS: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) was used to investigate the human cortical contrast response function to pattern onset stimuli with high temporal and spatial resolution. A beamformer source reconstruction approach was used to spatially localise and identify the time courses of activity at various visual cortical loci. RESULTS: Consistent with the findings of previous studies, MEG beamformer analysis revealed two simultaneous generators of the pattern onset evo

Neurophysiologic findings of neuronal migration disorders: intrinsic epileptogenicity of focal cortical dysplasia on electroencephalography, electrocorticography, and magnetoencephalography.

We define specific neurophysiologic characteristics for focal cortical dysplasia, a neuronal migration disorder. We reviewed data from published reports and our patients with focal cortical dysplasia. Our patients underwent preoperative scalp video-electroencephalography (EEG), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetoencephalography, and intraoperative or extraoperative electrocorticography monitoring. Scalp EEG showed trains of rhythmic epileptiform spike or sharp waves. Positive spikes correlated with early seizure onset, MRI lesion around the rolandic fissure, hemiparesis, and a less favor

Effects of phonological contrast on auditory word discrimination in children with and without reading disability: a magnetoencephalography (MEG) study.

Poor readers perform worse than their normal reading peers on a variety of speech perception tasks, which may be linked to their phonological processing abilities. The purpose of the study was to compare the brain activation patterns of normal and impaired readers on speech perception to better understand the phonological basis in reading disability. Whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) was recorded as good and poor readers, 7-13 years of age, performed an auditory word discrimination task. We used an auditory oddball paradigm in which the 'deviant' stimuli (/bat/, /kat/, /rat/) differed in
