Decoration of MnFe2O4 nanoparticles on activated carbon as recoverable photocatalyst for perfluorooctanesulfonic acid degradation in water.

A MnFe2O4/activated carbon composite (FMAC) was successfully prepared for the treatment of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). Structural and compositional analyses confirmed the formation of spinel manganese ferrite (FMO) nanoparticles and their uniform immobilization on the activated carbon (AC) surface. XPS results revealed the coexistence of multiple oxidation states of Mn and Fe, along with abundant oxygen-containing functional groups on the carbon support, indicating strong interfacial interactions between FMO and the AC support. Optical measurements showed that FMO and FMAC exhibit exc

From degradation to (re)magnetization: magnetic reprogramming of maghemite (Massart), magnetite, cobalt ferrite and ferrihydrite nanoparticles by human stem cells.

Iron-based nanostructures, whether environmental or synthetic, can infiltrate the human body and interact with cells due to their nanoscale dimensions. Some human cells, upon the internalization of iron oxide nanoparticles and their biodegradation, are capable of de novo biosynthesis of magnetic nanostructures. This process is evidenced by a transient loss and subsequent recovery of magnetic signal, a phenomenon termed "cellular re-magnetization". In this study, we explored the intracellular fate of four types of iron-based nanoparticles: maghemite (Massart), magnetite, cobalt ferrite, and fer

Structural, Magnetic, and Magnetocaloric Properties of Ce2(Fe, Co)17 Compounds: Tuning Magnetic Transitions and Enhancing Refrigeration Efficiency.

This study explores the structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties of Ce2(Fe, Co)17 (x = 0, 0.5, 0.6, and 0.7) compounds synthesized via arc melting under high temperatures exceeding 2300 K. The as-cast ingots are subsequently sealed and subjected to a heat treatment at 1323 K to improve homogeneity and crystallinity. Detailed analyses using X-ray diffraction and magnetometry reveal that cobalt substitution significantly impacts the structural and magnetic behavior, enabling precise tuning of the magnetic transition temperature and magnetic order. The substitution induces an anisotrop

Manipulating ultrafast magnetization dynamics of ferromagnets using the odd-even layer dependence of two-dimensional transition metal di-chalcogenides.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have drawn immense interest due to their strong spin-orbit coupling and unique layer number dependence in response to spin-valley coupling. This leads to the possibility of controlling the spin degree of freedom of the ferromagnet (FM) in thin film heterostructures and may prove to be of interest for next-generation spin-based devices. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the odd-even layer dependence of WS2 nanolayers by measurements of the ultrafast magnetization dynamics in WS2/Co3FeB thin film heterostructures by using time-resolved Ke

Precursor molecules for 1,2-diamidobenzene containing cobalt(II), nickel(II) and zinc(II) complexes - synthesis and magnetic properties.

Molecular magnetic materials based on 1,2-diamidobenzenes are well known and have been intensively studied both experimentally and computationally. They possess interesting magnetic properties as well as redox activity. In this work, we present the synthesis and investigation of potent synthons for constructing discrete metal-organic architectures featuring 1,2-diamidobenzene-coordinated metal centres. The synthons feature weakly bound dimethoxyethane (dme) ligands in addition to the 1,2-diamidobenzene. We characterize these complexes and investigate their magnetic properties by means of stati

Synthesis and characterization of nano crystallite carboxamide-based iron(III) complexes: SOD mimetic activity, antibacterial and anticancer activity and molecular docking study.

Three carboxamide-based ligands and their iron(III) complexes were prepared and structurally characterized. Analytical, thermal and mass spectra measurements showed a 1:1 stoichiometric (M:L) of the synthesized iron(III) complexes. The distorted octahedral geometry of the present iron(III) complexes was assigned based on the results of spectroscopy and magnetometry. Processing of X-ray diffraction data for powder samples by the software Expo 2014 confirmed the octahedral geometry of the three iron(III) complexes. Electrochemical properties of the present iron(III) complexes were studied by cyc

Dextran-Coated Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Loaded with Curcumin for Antimicrobial Therapies.

The current trend in antimicrobial-agent development focuses on the use of natural compounds that limit the toxicity of conventional drugs and provide a potential solution to the antimicrobial resistance crisis. Curcumin represents a natural bioactive compound with well-known antimicrobial, anticancer, and antioxidant properties. However, its hydrophobicity considerably limits the possibility of body administration. Therefore, dextran-coated iron oxide nanoparticles can be used as efficient drug-delivery supports that could overcome this limitation. The iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesize

Carbodiimide Conjugation of Latent Transforming Growth Factor β1 to Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles for Remote Activation.

Conjugation of latent growth factors to superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) is potentially useful for magnetically triggered release of bioactive macromolecules. Thus, the goal of this work was to trigger the release of active Transforming Growth-Factor Beta (TGF-β) via magnetic hyperthermia by binding SPIONs to the latent form of TGF-β, since heat has been shown to induce release of TGF-β from the latent complex. Commercially available SPIONS with high specific absorption rates (SAR) were hydrolyzed in 70% ethanol to create surface carboxylic acid conjugation sites for carbodi

Cortical compensation associated with dysphagia caused by selective degeneration of bulbar motor neurons.

According to recent neuroimaging studies, swallowing is processed within multiple regions of the human brain. In contrast to this, little is known about the cortical contribution and compensatory mechanisms produced by impaired swallowing. In the present study, we therefore investigated the cortical topography of volitional swallowing in patients with X-linked bulbospinal neuronopathy (Kennedy disease, KD). Eight dysphagic patients with genetically proven KD and an age-matched healthy control group were studied by means of whole-head magnetoencephalography using a previously established swallo

Spin Transport Across Interfaces With the Non-Collinear Antiferromagnet Mn3Sn.

Non-collinear antiferromagnets such as Mn 3 Sn are promising materials for ultrafast spintronic applications due to their peculiar electronic structure and efficient spin-dependent transport phenomena. Here, we investigate magnetic ordering and ultrafast spin transport in c-axis oriented Mn 3 Sn thin films and Mn 3 Sn -based heterostructures with Pt and Ni 80 Fe 20 . Temperature-dependent magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements confirm thermally activated switching of the Mn 3 Sn cluster octupole moment near the Néel temperature, while preserving predominantly in-plane magnetic ord

Supraparticles with Enhanced Mechanical and Signal Stability for Identification of Objects.

Micron-scaled, magnetic supraparticles (SPs) composed of oleic acid-functionalized iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) are promising candidates for object-embedded tagging and tracing using magnetic particle spectroscopy (MPS). A key challenge for such particulate identifiers lies in maintaining their defined magnetic signatures during processing and integration into host materials, since mechanical stress can cause structural alterations leading to both impaired particle integrity and diminished signal reliability. Herein, we elucidate how the thermal cross-linking of surface-anchored oleic acid l

A Spectroscopic Criterion for Identifying the Degree of Ground-Level Near-Degeneracy Derived from Effective Hamiltonian Analyses of Three-Coordinate Iron Complexes.

The fascinating magnetic and catalytic properties of coordinatively unsaturated 3d metal complexes are a manifestation of their electronic structures, in particular their nearly doubly or triply degenerate orbital ground levels. Here, we propose a criterion to determine the degree of degeneracy of this class of complexes based on their experimentally accessible magnetic anisotropy (parametrized by the electron spin g- and zero-field splitting (ZFS)-tensors). The criterion is derived from a comprehensive spectroscopic and theoretical study in the trigonal planar iron(0) complex, [(IMes)Fe(dvtms

Modelling the effect of varying metabolic rate and cardiac output on estimated tissue and blood O2 and CO2 levels in an extreme deep-diver, the goose-beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris).

High-resolution movement data from Cuvier's beaked, or goose-beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris, hereafter Ziphius, n = 8) tag deployments (4.1-19.2 days) were used to estimate blood and tissue O2 and CO2 levels. Acceleration and magnetometry data were used to estimate the locomotion cost (LC) from the relationship between activity and the O2 consumption rate. We estimated that the diving metabolic rate (DMR) decreased with increasing dive duration, ranging from 6.18 mL O2 min-1 kg-1 for very short dives (<1.0 min) to 1.65 mL O2 min-1 kg-1 and 2.06 mL O2 min-1 kg-1 for intermediate (>17.5 and ≤

High-field EPR of copper(II)-nitroxide compound exhibiting three-step phase transition: structural insights from the field-induced sample orientation.

Copper(II)-nitroxide based Cu(hfac)2LR compounds exhibit unusual magnetic behavior that can be induced by various stimuli. In many aspects, the magnetic phenomena observed in Cu(hfac)2LR are similar to classical spin-crossover behavior. However, these phenomena originate from polynuclear exchange-coupled spin clusters Cu2+-O˙-N< or >N-˙O-Cu2+-O˙-N<. Such peculiarities may result in additional multifunctionality of Cu(hfac)2LR compounds, making them promising materials for spintronic applications. Herein, we investigate the Cu(hfac)2LMeMe material, which demonstrates a three-step temperature-in
