Malakoplakia represents a chronic inflammatory disease associated with a broad spectrum of bacterial infections. On histopathology, Michaelis-Gutmann bodies are considered as pathognomonic histopathological findings. Rarity of the disease and wide variety of clinical presentation makes its diagnosis very challenging. A 29-year-old woman presented with a 3-month history of multiple purulent discharging nodules involving her lower abdomen, vulva, and left thigh. Physical examination also disclosed vaginal nodules and a left pelvic mass. Cystoscopy revealed multiple mucosal nodules and a perforation of the left vesical wall that appeared to communicate with the pelvic mass. Biopsies of the vesical and vulvar nodules revealed malakoplakia. Surgery and antibiotic therapy resulted in regression of all the lesions.

A 4 mo old female Staffordshire bull terrier puppy was presented with chronic Escherichia coli cystitis. INTRODUCTION: Malakoplakia is a granulomatosis of infectious origin in reaction to a chronic bacterial infection (most commonly urinary Escherichiacoli) related to an acquired phagocytosis impairment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report a case of penile malakoplakia in a 69-year-old man with lichen sclerosis and stenosis of the urinary meatus leading to recurrent urinary tract infections. The clinical aspect was suggestive of squamous cell carcinoma of the glans developing on lichen sclerosus, but histological examination revealed penile malakoplakia.

We report the MRI appearances in a patient with parametrial malakoplakia. The patient complained of pelvic pain and vaginal discharge. Physical examination revealed a "frozen" pelvis suggestive of malignancy. MRI showed bilateral parametrial "infiltration", but no overt primary pelvic tumour. The combination of these findings together with the inflammatory symptoms suggested an inflammatory condition. Malakoplakia was confirmed at resective biopsy.

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the experience in diagnosis and treatment of urachal mass in adults.
METHODS: The clinical data of 33 patients with urachal mass, 21 male and 12 females, aged 49 (30-75), were analyzed retrospectively.
RESULTS: The urachal masses of 11 patients (33%, 11/33) were benign, including 5 cases of abscess, 3 of cyst, 2 of malacoplakia, and 1 of xanthogranuloma. The most common symptom of the benign urachal mass was abdominal mass (36%). Seven patients underwent computed tomography (CT) and no calcification was found. A case of malakoplakia of the stomach associated with well-differentiated adenocarcinoma of the transverse colon was studied by light and electron microscopy. Although malakoplakia of the genitourinary tract and colon is reported frequently in the literature, malakoplakia that occurs primarily in the liver is rare, and only 4 cases have been described thus far. To our knowledge, this is the first case of malakoplakia of the liver diagnosed by a needle core biopsy. This case occurred in a 19-year-old man with small bowel ileus following Klebsiella pneumonia.
