Condom and sexual abstinence talk in the Malawi National Assembly.

BACKGROUND: Correct and consistent use of condoms has been reported as effective in the prevention of transmission of HIV. There have been many studies reporting on attitudes (perceptions) of communities on condoms and other aspects of HIV and AIDS and yet there is paucity of data on the perception towards condoms and abstinence by law makers. OBJECTIVE: To determine perceptions of Members of Parliament in Malawi towards condoms. METHODS: A qualitative study utilising parliamentary Hansards to describe the discussions about condoms and abstinence in the National Assembly 1999-2004. Content a

Haematological profiles of the people of rural southern Malawi: an overview.

An integrative review of the results of two published and two unpublished studies of anaemia in children, adolescent females, pregnant women and adults living in southern Malawi is presented. Anaemia was universally present in all age-groups, with the higher prevalences in infants (100%) and adolescent primigravidae (93.8%). Nutritional deficits of iron and vitamin A were major contributory factors but chronic malarial haemolysis also significantly contributed to the anaemia. Among boys, anaemia was more common among those with glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency than in those

Use of the Malawi shunt in the treatment of obstructive hydrocephalus in children.

In 1992, as a result of shortage of conventional shunts we devised our local Malawi shunt made from siliconised rubber tubing and right angled metal connector between its ventricular and peritoneal parts, like the Harare shunt from which it differs in a few ways. Between 1992 and 1995, eighty four Malawian hydrocephalic children underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunting with the Malawi shunt. The operation was routinely performed by the consultant assisted by residents. Parietal burr hole was made to introduce the ventricular catheter and the peritoneal catheter inserted by open surgery through

Prevalence of genital infections in medical inpatients in Blantyre, Malawi.

The limited information on the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in Malawi suggests that they are common. In studies in Lilongwe in 1989 and Blantyre in 1990, the prevalence of STDs was 4.4% in unselected outpatients and 42% in antenatal clinic patients respectively. Malawi is one of the countries worst affected by the HIV pandemic, with an estimated national HIV seroprevalence of 10% in the age group over 15 years and of 32% in pregnant women who attended antenatal clinics in Blantyre in 1993. Heterosexual intercourse is the main mode of HIV transmission in sub-Saharan Africa

Knowledge and attitudes toward onchocerciasis in the Thyolo highlands of Malawi.

In preparation for mass distribution of ivermectin to control onchocerciasis in the Thyolo highlands of Malawi a survey was conducted to determine knowledge and attitudes toward onchocerciasis which could assist in developing educational messages. Since onchocerciasis is not known by a specific name in the Thyolo highlands, information was sought about individual perceptions of common symptoms of infection. Itching, skin thickening, nodules, or depigmentation (leopard skin) were reported by 95% of those interviews. Effective treatment was often thought by the community to be available when act

Meningococcal disease in Malawi: studies on the genetic relatedness of the bacteria.

Seventy-seven meningococci, isolated from patients and carriers during a large epidemic of meningococcal meningitis in Malawi, were characterized in terms of antimicrobial susceptibility, plasmid content and multi-locus enzyme electrophoresis (MLEE). All the isolates were sensitive to chloramphenicol but six had high enough minimum inhibitory concentrations of penicillin (> or = 2 mg/litre) to render them clinically resistant. Only one isolate was sensitive to sulphonamides but all the isolates were sensitive to rifampicin and ciprofloxacin, two drugs that would be suitable alternatives in pro

Efficacy of an Australian Babesia bovis vaccine strain in Malawi.

Three calves vaccinated with the Australian Ka strain of Babesia bovis were fully protected against experimental infection with an isolate from a farm on which four of 210 vaccinated cattle had died from B bovis infection. A degree of cross protection against the isolate was demonstrated in one calf which had been infected previously with Babesia bigemina.

A pneumococcal controlled human infection model in Malawi: Transfer of an established pneumococcal carriage model from Liverpool, UK to Blantyre, Malawi - A feasibility study.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality due to community acquired pneumonia, bacterial meningitis and bacteraemia worldwide. Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines protect against invasive disease, but are expensive to manufacture, limited in serotype coverage, associated with serotype replacement and demonstrate reduced effectiveness against mucosal colonisation.  As asymptomatic colonisation of the human nasopharynx is a prerequisite for pneumococcal disease, this is proposed as a marker for novel vaccine efficacy. Our team established a safe and reproducible pneumo

Male Genital Schistosomiasis Along the Shoreline of Lake Malawi: Baseline Prevalence and Associated Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices Among Local Fishermen in Mangochi District, Malawi.

Male genital schistosomiasis (MGS) is an often-overlooked chronic consequence of urogenital schistosomiasis (UGS) associated with Schistosoma haematobium eggs and associated pathologies in the genital system of afflicted men. Despite the first formal description of MGS in 1911 by Madden, its epidemiology, diagnostic testing and case management of today are not well-described. However, since several interactions between MGS and the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) are known, there is renewed public health interest in MGS across sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). To shed new light upon MGS in Malawi, a

Malaria infection confounds inflammation-adjusted micronutrient biomarker concentrations in children and women in Malawi: a secondary analysis of the 2015/2016 Malawi micronutrient survey.

Inflammation and infections such as malaria affect concentrations of many micronutrient biomarkers and hence estimates of nutritional status. We aimed to assess the relationship between malaria infection and micronutrient biomarker concentrations in pre-school children (PSC), school-age children (SAC) and women of reproductive age (WRA) in Malawi and examine the potential role of malarial immunity on the relationship between malaria and micronutrient biomarkers. Data from the 2015/2016 Malawi micronutrient survey were used. The associations between current or recent malaria infection, detected

Immunogenomic profiles of HIV-associated classic Hodgkin lymphoma from Malawi.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC) with intracorporeal urinary diversion (ICUD) has become an increasingly utilized approach to treating various bladder pathologies requiring extirpation. As surgeons have become more experienced with ICUD, especially with lesser-used diversions such as continent cutaneous reservoirs, the technique has evolved. METHODS: We describe our technique and recent advances in the practical creation of robotic ICUD with a continent catheterizable pouch (CCP) built upon the open principles of the previously described "Indiana Pouch, " w

Unexpected Zoonotic and Hybrid Schistosome Egg Excretion Patterns, Malawi, 2024.

Two exemplary cases of mixed urogenital and intestinal schistosomiasis in Malawi show hybridizations of Schistosoma mattheei with S. haematobium and S. mansoni, indicating newly emerging genetic diversity. Complex egg excretion patterns in feces expose current diagnostic gaps and alert to future sampling needs for effective surveillance of zoonotic schistosomiasis.

Genomic Surveillance of Climate-Amplified Cholera Outbreak, Malawi, 2022-2023.

In the aftermath of 2 extreme weather events in 2022, Malawi experienced a severe cholera outbreak; 59,325 cases and 1,774 deaths were reported by March 31, 2024. We generated 49 Vibrio cholerae full genomes from isolates collected during December 2022-March 2023. Phylogenetic and phylogeographic methods confirmed that the Malawi outbreak strains originated from Pakistan's 2022 cholera outbreak. That finding aligns with substantial travel between the 2 countries. The estimated most recent ancestor of this lineage was from June-August 2022, coinciding with Pakistan's floods and cholera surge. Survival After Diagnosis of Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Malawi.

PURPOSE: Esophageal cancer (EC) is the second most common cancer in Malawi, with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) representing >90% of all ECs. Despite significant morbidity and mortality, little is known about disease outcomes. In this study, we assess survival after ESCC diagnosis in Malawi. METHODS: We report on ESCC cases enrolled in a case-control study at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe from August 2017 to April 2020. Suspected cases completed a questionnaire interview; provided blood, urine, and saliva specimens; and underwent a tumor biopsy for histologic confirmation. Ca

Healthcare worker perspectives on mother's insufficient milk supply in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Human milk insufficiency is a significant barrier to implementing breastfeeding, and it is identified as a prevalent concern in 60-90% of mothers in low-and-middle-income countries. Breastmilk insufficiency can lead to hypoglycemia, hypernatremia, nutritional deficiencies, and failure to thrive in newborns and infants. Studies investigating the impact of breastfeeding interventions to improve milk production highlight inconsistencies between healthcare workers and mothers perceived support, as well as gaps in practical knowledge and training. The aim of this study was to determine
