[Epidemic parotiditis, a reportable disease].

Three consecutive patients with an acute swelling of one of the cheeks, were diagnosed with epidemic parotiditis. The first phase of the diagnostic procedure for an acute cheek swelling is to eliminate the possibility of odontogenic causes. When odontogenic problems have been excluded, non-dentition-related causes may be considered. An acute, progressive swelling in the preauricular area can often be attributed to an inflammation of the parotid gland, but epidemic parotiditis should also be considered. Epidemic parotiditis, or mumps, is caused by the mumps virus. Contamination occurs aerogenic

A Cross-Sectional Study to Understand COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Among Nursing Students and Health Workers: Implications for Future Outbreak Preparedness in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy is a global challenge affecting workplaces and academic institutions. Despite efforts, low vaccination rates persist in South Africa, increasing the risks associated with pathogen exposure. This study assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions (KAPs) of healthcare workers (HCWs) and students at a Nursing College regarding voluntary and mandatory COVID-19 vaccination. METHODS: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted using a structured, self-administered electronic questionnaire. All eligible nursing students and staff at the participating Nursin

[The meaning of vaccine or when predicting is a duty].

From the perspective of historiography, the article analyzes the construction of scientific medicine's major landmark: the small-pox vaccine. When this vaccine was created and widely distributed, the medical field demonstrated how technology controls life on a planetary scale. The great victory of scientific medicine rests on the fact that today the life of the small-pox virus depends upon laboratory conditions. Born in England during the 1870's, the anti-vaccine movement questioned universal, mandatory small-pox vaccination. The article examines some metaphors and analogies used by physicians

COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate and Vaccination Rates in the US Military, 2020‒2022.

Objectives. To assess the effect of the vaccination mandate on COVID-19 vaccination rates and identify independent factors associated with lack of postmandate vaccination among service members. Methods. We assessed all active component service members for COVID-19 vaccination status from December 11, 2020, to January 1, 2022. We used comparative interrupted time series analysis and logistic regression to compare pre- and postmandate completion of the vaccine series between the US military and the US general population. Results. Previous documented infection with severe acute respiratory syndro

Factors influencing vaccine hesitancy among United Kingdom adolescents in a senior high school environment and actions to address it.

We explored adolescent viewpoints on vaccines and hesitancy using an anonymized, validated, self-completed electronic questionnaire amongst state-school Year 12-13 adolescents in London, UK. As the response rate was low (Cohort 1; n = 112/486, 23.0%), we repeated the survey with incoming students (cohort 2, n = 256/275; 93%). A focus group (n = 31) evaluated international HPV campaign posters. Cohort 1 participants were 82.1% female, 13.4% male, and ethnically diverse (32.1% Asian/Asian British, 29.5% Black/Black British, 25.9% White, 7.1% Mixed); Cohort 2 were 80% female, 18% male, with parti

Mumps in the Eastern Bohemia Region of the Czech Republic - a Serological Survey 2008-2012.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of mumps has decreased in many countries since the introduction of vaccination programmes, however, in the past decade a rapid increase in the disease occurrence has been reported worldwide. The reason for this situation is still not clear. We present the results of a serological survey carried out in the Eastern Bohemia Region of the Czech Republic during the years 2008-2012. METHODS: In total, 2,536 samples of 2,034 patients were examined during the study period. The study cohort was divided into two groups, one consisted of individuals born before the introduction

Study on the Vaccination of the Population of Romania against Monkeypox in Terms of Medical Security.

Although it has been shown in numerous studies that immunization of the population by vaccination is the most effective way to protect against smallpox or other polioviruses, the anti-vaccination public rhetoric recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to influence the populations acceptance of vaccination against newly emerging viruses. This fact influenced our decision to study the vaccination of the Romanian population against the virus that causes monkeypox, aiming to identify the degree of compliance regarding the decision related to vaccination acceptance/non-acceptance/hesitation

[BCG Today].

Until recently, French BCG vaccination policy required BCG vaccination before entry into day-care centers or school and the revaccination of tuberculin-negative children. Recent reassessment of this policy led in 2004 to the discontinuation of all revaccinations and of postvaccination tuberculin tests except those performed as part of tuberculosis diagnosis or in the monitoring of healthcare and social workers, for whom BCG vaccination remains mandatory. After an epidemiologic assessment of the effect of either selective vaccination of high-risk children or discontinuation of all BCG vaccinati

Prevention of congenital rubella.

The vaccine of choice for rubella vaccination is considered to be RA 27/3, based on frequency of side effects, duration of immunity, antigenic potential and rate of reinfection by wild virus. The most appropriate individuals to be vaccinated are prepubertal schoolgirls and susceptible members of other high-risk groups, and a nationwide immunization program is suggested. Premarital determination of rubella-immune status should be mandatory for all women of childbearing age. A favourable cost/benefit ratio for rubella vaccination seems highly probable. The use of a rubella "fact sheet" to provid

Meningococcal Vaccine Among Domestic Hajj Pilgrims: A Large-Scale Assessment of Coverage, Facilitators, and Barriers.

BACKGROUND: Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) remains a critical threat during Hajj. Following a 2024 resurgence of travel-related IMD cases, assessing domestic adherence to mandatory quadrivalent (MenACWY) meningococcal vaccination has become a public health priority. While international compliance is high, data on domestic pilgrims who constitute 25-40% of the population remain limited. AIM: To assess Meningococcal vaccine coverage and identify the sociodemographic determinants, motivators, and barriers among domestic pilgrims. METHODS: We analyzed data from a large-scale cross-sectiona

Health Care-Acquired Viral Respiratory Diseases.

Health care-acquired viral respiratory infections are common and cause increased patient morbidity and mortality. Although the threat of viral respiratory infection has been underscored by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, respiratory viruses have a significant impact in health care settings even under normal circumstances. Studies report decreased nosocomial transmission when aggressive infection control measures are implemented, with more success noted when using a multicomponent approach. Influenza vaccination of health care personnel furthers decrease rates of transmission;

Vaccination coverage among medical residents in Paris, France.

Medical residents are particularly exposed to the risk of occupational infection. We aimed to determine the vaccination coverage in residents with an anonymous self-reporting electronic questionnaire. A total of 250 residents took part in this survey. Vaccination rates were particularly high for mandatory vaccinations (diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, hepatitis B virus and tuberculosis). Regarding recommended vaccinations (influenza, 45.6%; pertussis, 65.2%; measles, 62.8%; varicella, 62.8%), rates were insufficient to prevent hospital epidemics, but higher than those reported in other heal

Measles and rubella seroprevalence in a population of young adult blood donors, France 2013.

As part of the evaluation of the French plan for the elimination of measles and rubella, we conducted a seroprevalence survey in 2013, aimed at updating seroprevalence data for people 18-32 years old. A secondary objective was to estimate measles incidence in this population during the 2009-2011 outbreak, and thus estimate the exhaustiveness of measles mandatory reporting. We used a cross-sectional survey design, targeting blood donors 18-32 years old, living in France since 2009, who came to give blood in a blood collecting site. We included 4647 people in metropolitan France, 806 people in R

[Clinical forms and treatment of tuberculosis in children].

In France, the incidence of tuberculosis has been in constant decline over recent decades which has resulted in the lifting of mandatory vaccination as well as a growing lack of awareness of the action to take with a "suspect" child. Treatment should be coordinated between doctors from anti-tuberculosis centres and specialised hospital departments.

Vaccinations for Hajj: Enhancing health and global health security.

The Hajj pilgrimage, one of the world's largest and most diverse mass gatherings, poses unique challenges for preventing infectious disease outbreaks. Vaccinations are vital in reducing the risk and spread of diseases during this event. This narrative review examines the impact of vaccination programs on infectious disease mitigation during the Hajj and their broader implications for global health security (GHS). Mandatory vaccination protocols against Meningococcal Meningitis, Yellow Fever, Influenza, pneumococcal diseases, and COVID-19 have demonstrated significant success in controlling inf

The Influence of Introducing Free Vaccination against Streptococcus pneumoniae on the Uptake of Recommended Vaccination in Poland.

Since 2017, pneumococcal vaccination has evolved from a recommended chargeable vaccination to a mandatory, and therefore free, vaccination for all children. While a 10-valent vaccine is commonly used, parents have the option to use a 13-valent vaccine for a fee. This study aimed to investigate whether and how the introduction of free pneumococcal vaccination affected the uptake of recommended vaccination and to assess the association of chargeable pneumococcal vaccination with recommended vaccination. Data from 1595 vaccination record cards kept by six primary care clinics in urban and rural a

Vaccination of healthcare workers: A review.

Vaccine-preventable diseases are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. As new vaccines are proving to be effective and as the incidence of some infections decreases, vaccination practices are changing. Healthcare workers (HCWs) are particularly exposed to and play a role in nosocomial transmission, which makes them an important target group for vaccination. Most vaccine-preventable diseases still carry a significant risk of resurgence and have caused outbreaks in recent years. While many professional societies favor vaccination of HCWs as well as the general population, recommendatio

Pediatric rheumatic diseases and vaccinations: a promising alliance.

BACKGROUND: Immunosuppressive drugs, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, as methotrexate, glucocorticoids and biological agents can limit the immune response to vaccines and, in some cases, contraindicate their administration. Non-live vaccines are safe also for immunosuppressed paediatric patients. Seroprotection is maintained in children with rheumatic diseases or autoinflammatory diseases (AID) undergoing vaccinations on immunosuppression, except for those treated with high-dose glucocorticoids and B-cell depleting drugs. METHODS: We analyzed in a retrospective observational study 107 p
