The investigators of this study hypothesized that fractures of the mandibular condyle can be repaired using short-segment intramedullary implants and purely endoscopic surgical technique, using a basic science, human cadaver model in an academic center. Endoscopic instrumentation was used through a transoral mucosal incision to place intramedullary implants of 2 cm in length into osteotomized mandibular condyles. The surgical maneuvers that required to insert these implants, including condyle positioning, reaming, implant insertion, and seating of the mandibular ramus, are described herein. Pr

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of mandibular condyle fractures fixation via intraoral approach with endoscopic assistance. Thirty-nine patients with low mandibular condyle fractures with lateral (34 patients) or medial (5 patients) displacement were included in the study. The paper contains detailed description of operation technique considering displacement type. This minimally invasive procedure resulted in stable fixation of the fracture so that maxillomandibular splinting was limited to 9-14 days after operation. The patients were discharged 4 to 7 days postoperativ

BACKGROUND: Dislocation of the mandibular condyle into the middle cranial fossa is rare in clinics. It often occurs when the mouth is open wide during the injury. It causes restriction of mandibular motion, lower facial asymmetry, pain in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), etc.
OBJECTIVE: To introduce the features of intracranial mandibular condyle dislocation and discuss the management to this kind of trauma.
MAJOR FINDINGS: In this paper, the authors present two cases, describing the diagnosis, surgical management, and 1-year follow-up evaluation. The results of the authors' treatment to i

BACKGROUND: Ewing sarcoma (ES) is a rare, primary malignancy of bone that occurs in childhood and early adolescence. Improved methods of diagnosis and treatment have dramatically increased survival over the last 20 years. Treatment mainstays are chemotherapy and surgical tumor resection. ES usually occurs in long bones of the axial skeleton; however, it may rarely arise in facial structures, particularly the mandible. In these cases, resection presents a challenging postsurgical reconstruction.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We present the clinical findings and management of a case of ES that developed

INTRODUCTION: Bioabsorbable screws became widely used for stable fixation in orthognathic surgery as biomechanical technology advanced. Recently, 3D image analyses begin to be used to evaluate surgical changes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate, using 3D vector analysis, the stability of bicortical bioabsorbable screw fixation in mandibular setback using a sagittal split ramus osteotomy. Spatial change of the mandibular condyle was determined by 3D coordinates containing directional information.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bicortical screw fixation was performed using either a bioabsorbabl

OBJECTIVE: To establish and assess the precision of pre-surgical condyle position planning using mandibular movement trajectory data for orthognathic surgery.
METHODS: Skull data from large-field cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and dental oral scan data were imported into IVSPlan 1.0.25 software for 3D reconstruction and fusion, creating 3D models of the maxilla and mandible. Trajectory data of mandibular movement were collected using a mandibular motion recorder, and the data were integrated with the jaw models within the software. Subsequently, three-dimensional trajectories of the con

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether degenerative bone changes in the mandibular condyle on cone beam computed tomography images are associated with the Eichner index.
METHODOLOGY: 336 cone beam computed tomography images condyle images of 168 patients were analyzed for degenerative bone changes. These changes were named as condyle flattening, osteophytes, erosions, subchondral sclerosis, generalized sclerosis and subchondral cysts. The edentulous status of the patients was classified as group A-B-C and subtypes according to the Eichner index. Categorical variables were

Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) often occur in the molars in the mandibular ramus; they often progress asymptomatically and are discovered only after widespread development. Some cases of OKC progress to the mandibular condyle; however, very few cases exist only in the condyle. To the best of our knowledge, in all of the previously reported cases, OKCs occurred in the mandibular ramus, which underwent resection. The present study reports the case of a 31-year-old man in whom an OKC (13x12x6 mm) occurred discretely in the base of the condyle, in which the condylar head was successfully preserved

This systematic review was conducted to evaluate the retro-auricular trans-meatal approach (RA) to mandibular head fractures. Fractures of the mandibular head (8%) are a specific type of mandibular condyle fractures (34%). Despite numerous complications of conservative treatment, e.g., limited mobility and even ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint, as well as shortening of the mandibular ramus resulting in malocclusion, surgical intervention in this type of fracture is still problematic. The main problems with the dominant pre-auricular approach are the high risk of paralysis of the facial

Patients with end-stage temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pathology present with loss of vertical ramus height with resulting retrognathia, anterior open bite, and restricted jaw function requiring joint reconstruction. Costochondral grafts, long considered the gold standard for TMJ reconstruction, carry risks of bony ankylosis and resorption. Custom-made alloplastic TMJ prostheses show excellent objective and subjective outcomes but are also associated with complications such as infection or metal sensitivity, and necessitate hardware explantation in some cases. Revision surgeries are rare but pr

INTRODUCTION: Osteoma is a rare slow-growing benign neoplasm which is often asymptomatic and composed of mature bone. Only 21 cases were previously reported in the mandibular condyle.
OBSERVATION: A 60 year old male presented with gross asymmetry of the lower jaw and reduced function. He mentioned that he was involved in an accident to the head about 16 years ago. Upon examination, it was noticed that the chin deviated to the left with some discomfort during function. Computed tomography revealed a radiopaque mass medial to the left condylar pole. The lesion was gradually increasing in size a

PURPOSE: Mandibular condylar fractures are relatively common fractures, accounting for 29 to 52% of all mandibular fractures. Recently, the debate between closed versus open treatment of the condylar fracture has shifted toward more specific surgical questions concerning the number and pattern of the fixation method for the condylar region. We have attempted to resolve the controversy with the systematic review and meta-analysis. The purpose of the present study was to compare the outcomes of different methods of fixation for mandibular condylar fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to test the bone thickness and potential screw length for osteosynthesis of condylar base fractures (according to the Loukota classification) with an experimental titanium plate, placed in an ideal position against 2 types of conventional plates.
STUDY DESIGN: After exclusion of completely edentulous mandibles, 28 dentate macerated mandibles available at the time of the study were included. Linear regression models 1 and 2 compared the sums of the 2 cranial bone thicknesses and the 3 caudal thicknesses among the 3 different plate designs, and linear models
