The occurrence of loiasis, mansonellosis and wuchereriasis in the Jarawa River Valley, central Nigeria.

In a study to assess the status of filariasis in the Jarawa River Valley of the savanna area of Nigeria, 940 self-selected residents from 10 villages were examined between March 1984 and April 1987. Overall results showed 105 (11.2%) had microfilaraemia and/or clinical signs of filariasis. Sixty-four (6.8%) and 20 (2.1%) persons, respectively, were infected with Mansonella perstans and Loa loa microfilariae (mff). Four of the 28 villagers examined had Wuchereria bancrofti mff in their night blood samples whereas 17 (1.8%) of all residents surveyed had clinical filariasis mainly due to lympho-o

Hypogonadism and ecdysteroid production in Loa loa and Mansonella perstans filariasis.

Possible endocrinological repercussions of infection with Loa loa and Mansonella perstans filariae were studied in Gabonese subjects. Microfilaremic males were compared with amicrofilaremic controls. In the infected group 13/105 subjects (12%) presented only abnormally low serum levels of testosterone (less than 4 ng/ml), 25/105 (24%) only abnormally high serum levels of gonadotrophins, FSH (greater than 15 mIU/ml) and LH (greater than 20 mIU/ml), and 22/105 (21%) presented anomalies in both testosterone and gonadotrophin levels. One out of 68 control subjects had 3.6 ng/ml seric testosterone

The status of human filariasis in relation to clinical signs in endemic areas of the Niger Delta.

A study was carried out in selected parts of the Niger Delta Basin on human filariasis and its relationship to clinical signs. One hundred and seventy-six (13.0%) of 1351 individuals examined were infected with microfilaria. Forty-six percent of microfilaria positive cases had M. perstans; 25.6% had W. bancrofti, 19.3% had L. loa, and 9.0% had O. volvulus. The prevalence of filariasis increased with age. Microfilarial density was generally low, 28.4% of infected individuals had counts of 50-100 microfilaria per 20 mm3 blood, 12.5% had counts less than five microfilaria per 20 mm3 blood. Onchoc

Mansonella perstans filariasis in Uganda: patterns of microfilaraemia and clinical manifestations in two endemic communities.

Surveys for Mansonella perstans infection and potentially related clinical manifestations were undertaken in two endemic communities in Mukono and Luwero districts of Uganda where no other human filarial infections are transmitted. A sensitive and accurate counting chamber method was used for quantifying microfilaraemia in 100microl of finger-prick blood. Among 575 and 991 examined individuals aged >or=1 year in the two communities, the overall microfilariae (mf) prevalence was significantly higher in Mukono (76.5%) than in Luwero (57.7%). As early as age 1-4 years, 40.6% and 20.5% of the chil

The feasibility of a bed net impregnation program to enhance control of Malayan filariasis along a swamp forest in southern Thailand.

The purpose of this study is to document the potential feasibility of using a bed net impregnation program to enhance the control of Malayan filariasis in southern Thailand. A survey was conducted in one Muslim and one Buddhist village along the swamp forest in Narathiwat Province. Face-to-face interview was employed to collect data on practice of bed net use, knowledge and attitudes on filarial control and acceptance if a bed net impregnation program were to be introduced. Bed nets were used by 98.5% of the study households. Both Muslims and Buddhists were all in bed by 23.00 hrs. By 03.00 hr

The safety and efficacy of a single dose of ivermectin alone (150-200 microg/kg bodyweight), albendazole alone (400 mg) or the combination of these two drugs was assessed, in Uganda, in three groups of individuals infected with Mansonella perstans (with 15, 13 and 15 subjects in each group, respectively). No side-effects were observed or reported during the first 7 days post-treatment and every subject remained microfilaraemic during the 12 months of follow-up. In the subjects given ivermectin alone or albendazole alone, the microfilarial intensities consistently remained close to their pre-tr

Studies on filariasis in Bauchi State, Nigeria. V. The distribution and prevalence of mansonellosis with special reference to clinical signs.

A survey on mansonellosis was carried out in Bauchi State of Nigeria between January 1990 and March 1992. Of the 5,640 inhabitants examined, 24 (0.4%) were positive for Mansonella streptocerca microfilariae. Microfilaria rate and mf density increased gradually with host age. While infection and sex are independent, mansonellosis was significantly lower in subjects within the first three decades of life than in those above 31 years (P < 0.05). Clinical signs observed include pruritus, rash, inguinal adenopathy and occasional dizziness. Skin biopsies taken from the shoulder gave the highest freq

Cell adherence to microfilariae of Onchocerca volvulus: a comparative study.

The conditions were examined for in vitro antibody-mediated adherence of granulocytes to microfilariae of Onchocera volvulus and Dirofilaria immitis. Reactivity in human sera from patients in endemic foci in Sudan was specific for O. volvulus and no reactions were observed with heterologous Onchocerca species or with Mansonella perstans. Microfilariae from skin, nodules or adult female worms were satisfactory targets for cell adherence, and the cells involved were almost exclusively eosinophils. The reaction was inhibited by indomethacin but not by nordihydroguaiaretic acid, an inhibitor of le

A survey of filariasis among refugees in south Florida.

Between January 1981 and March 1982, a filariasis survey was conducted among 668 Haitian immigrants and 155 Southeast Asian refugees residing in Florida, U.S.A. Microfilariae were detected only in Haitians, with 6.7% positive for Wuchereria bancrofti and 1.3% positive for Mansonella ozzardi. The majority of individuals with bancroftian filariasis came from five coastal urban areas including Port-au-Prince, Duvalierville, Gonaïves, Leógane and Cap-Haitien. No unequivocal signs of bancroftian filariasis or mansonellosis were seen. Membrane feeding of several species and strains of laboratory-rea

The prevalence and distribution of Mansonella ozzardi in coastal north Trinidad, W.I.

A day blood smear survey for Mansonella ozzardi in the north coast communities of Trinidad recorded a prevalence of 4.8% in 4,488 persons examined. Prevalence rates were highest in the four western-most communities, where the vector, Culicoides phlebotomus, is a severe nuisance problem. Prevalence rates increased with age and were higher in males than in females. Mean microfilaria densities were low in both sexes up to 50 years of age but in older males the density increased with age. Wuchereria bancrofti infections were detected in five of the ten communities surveyed.

Familial Aggregation and Heritability of Loa loa Microfilaremia.

BACKGROUND: For a given prevalence of Loa loa microfilaremia, the proportion of people with high densities varies significantly between communities. We hypothesized that this variation is related to the existence of familial clusters of hypermicrofilaremic individuals that would be the consequence of a genetic predisposition to present high L. loa microfilarial densities. METHODS: A familial study was performed in 10 villages in the Okola Health District of Cameroon. Intrafamilial correlation coefficients and heritability estimates were assessed for both the presence of L. loa microfilaremia

Plasmodium falciparum and helminth coinfection in a semi urban population of pregnant women in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Helminth infections and malaria are widespread in the tropics. Recent studies suggest helminth infections may increase susceptibility to Plasmodium falciparum infection. If confirmed, this increased susceptibility could be particularly important during pregnancy-induced immunosuppression. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the geographical distribution of P. falciparum-helminth coinfection and the associations between P. falciparum infection and infection with various parasite species in pregnant women in Entebbe, Uganda. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at baseline during a tr
