Manure application as fertilizer can increase environmental exposure risk, as antibiotics, antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB), and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) can be transmitted to agricultural fields, and adjacent natural systems. Understanding how specific antibiotics and ARGs respond within different manure fractions during on-farm management is limited. The study objective was to conduct a mass flow analysis determining the fate of antibiotic resistance factors (antibiotics, ARGs, and ARB) through solid-liquid separation, with the solid fraction continuing through a bedding recover

The study aim was to reveal the mechanism of impact of two type biochar on composting of hen manure (HM) and wheat straw (WS). Biochar derived from coconut shell and bamboo used as additives to reduce antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) in HM compost. The results manifested that effect of biochar amendment was significant to reduce ARB in HM composting. Compared with control, the microbial activity and abundance were increased in both biochar applied treatment, and bacterial community was changed. Additionally, network analysis revealed that biochar amendment increased the quantity of microorg

Manure can be a source of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) that enter the soil. However, previous studies assessing ARG persistence in soil have generally lacked continuity over sampling times, consistency of location, and assessing the impact of discontinuing manure application. We evaluated both short- and long-term ARG accumulation dynamics in soil with a 40-year known history of manure use. Manure application caused a greater abundance of tetracycline, macrolide, and sulfonamide ARGs in the soil. There was an initial spike in ARG abundance resulting from manure bacteria harboring ARGs be

Veterinary antibiotics (VAs) contamination has been considered as a worldwide environmental and health concern in recent decades. This paper reviewed the variability of contents of VAs and their release from the animal breeding industry into the surrounding environment along with the performance of the manure treatment technologies. The data collected revealed that VAs were mostly excreted in animal feces and observed in manure, soil, water, and sediment. The findings illustrate the disparity of VAs in excretion rates, consumption, and their residues in the environment with relatively high dis

The effects of the corn stalk charred biomass (CB) prepared at different pyrolysis temperatures as additives on nutrient transformation during aerobic composting of pig manure were investigated. The results showed that the addition of CB carbonized at different temperatures to pig manure compost significantly influenced the compost temperature, moisture, pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter degradation, total nitrogen, [Formula: see text] and NH3 variations during composting. Compared with control and adding CB charred at lower temperature treatments, the addition of CB prepared over 70

The objective of this study was to investigate humification and mineralization of manure-straw mixtures contaminated by tetracyclines during composting. Hen manure, pig manure and rice straw were used as the raw materials. The manure-straw mixtures were spiked with tetracycline, chlortetracycline, and oxytetracycline at the concentration of 60 mg/kg dry matter. The results show that tetracyclines had no obvious influence on the composting process and more than 93% of the tetracyclines was decreased during a 45-day composting. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra indicated that easily

A physical/chemical treatment train, that included 24-hour preliminary settling followed by coagulation/flocculation and sedimentation, was tested at a laboratory bench scale to treat liquid swine manure for the removal of total suspended solids (TSS) and total phosphorus (TP). Preliminary (i.e., natural) settling time had an effect on TSS removal within only the first 24 hours. TSS removal efficiency reached 75% (TSS concentration was reduced from 5,800 to 1,450 mg 1(-1)) after 24 hours of preliminary settling. Also, as a result of the 24-hour preliminary settling, TP concentration was reduce

With the rapid expansion of livestock farming, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment have become an increasing concern. However, studies on the vertical distribution of ARGs in soils surrounding livestock farms remain limited. This study investigates the distribution of antibiotics, potentially toxic elements (PTEs), and physicochemical properties in soils from three livestock farm types (pig, cattle, and layer) in Henan Province, China, and evaluates their effects on ARG prevalence. Antibiotic concentrations were highest in soils from layer farms, followed by those from pig an

The application of animal manure to agricultural soil is a very common practice to improve soils fertility, providing a rich source of organic matter and nutrients. However, the presence of certain trace elements in the manure can result in a threat for food safety and the environment. In addition to their potential toxic effects on crops, animal and humans, certain metals such as cadmium, chromium, copper, nickel, mercury, cobalt, lead and zinc may play a role in the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance, as they can increase the selective pressure on bacteria. To evaluate holisticall

BACKGROUND: The dissemination of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) in US poultry and dairy cows poses a public health threat. Farm workers caring for infected animals are at risk to acquire infections due to exposure to contaminated milk or poultry feces and secretions. Far ultraviolet-C (UV-C) light could provide continuous decontamination of surfaces and air in agricultural settings, but efficacy against organisms in whole milk or chicken manure is unclear.
METHODS: We examined the efficacy of far UV-C light against bacteriophage MS2 and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus a

INTRODUCTION: The spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment has received widespread attention. Nutrition cycling microbiomes specifically refer to microorganisms capable of mineralizing nitrogen and phosphorus, which dominate the microbial community in long-term manured soils. However, changes in nutrition cycling genes/microbiomes and the mechanisms by which these microbiomes mediate ARG transfer through vertical and horizontal gene transfer remain poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to elucidate how nutrition cycling microbiomes mediate the dissemination an

Trifolium repens L. (white clover) and Lolium perenne L. (ryegrass) are green manures widely used in conservation tillage systems worldwide. Eleusine indica L. (goosegrass) is a globally recognized noxious weed. Herein, we investigated the effects of aqueous extracts, decomposed liquids, and different straw-to-soil ratios on the germination and growth of goosegrass. The results showed that high concentrations (≥ 30%) of aqueous extracts or decomposed liquids of both green manures significantly inhibited germination-related parameters of goosegrass. The strongest inhibitory effect was observed

Snowmelt runoff is a dominant pathway of phosphorus (P) losses from agricultural lands in cold climatic regions. Soil amendments effectively reduce P losses from soils by converting P to less soluble forms; however, changes in P speciation in cold climatic regions with fall-applied amendments have not been investigated. This study evaluated P composition in soils from a manured field with fall-amended alum (Al2(SO4)3·18H2O), gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O), or Epsom salt (MgSO4·7H2O) using three complementary methods: sequential P fractionation, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-rays (

This study was conducted to evaluate the abundance of antibiotic resistant bacteria and their resistance genes from agriculture soil supplemented with pig manure. Uncultivable soil sample was supplemented with pig manure samples under microcosm experimental conditions and plated on Luria-Bertani (LB) agar incorporated with commercial antibiotics. The supplementation of soil with 15% pig manure resulted in the highest increase in the population of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB)/multiple antibiotic resistant bacteria (MARB). Seven genera that included Pseudomonas, Escherichia, Providencia,

Composting has become an alternative for the treatment of organic effluents, due to its low cost, easy handling, and a great capacity for treating swine manure. As it is a biological process, many microorganisms are involved during the composting process and act in the degradation of organic matter and nutrients and also have the ability to degrade contaminants and accelerate the transformations during composting. The objective of this work was to identify microorganisms present in the swine effluent composting system, under the contamination by most used veterinary drugs in Brazil. The compos

Proper management of biogenic residues, particularly livestock manure and food waste, is a major challenge for Bangladesh. While mono-digestion has traditionally been used on farms for treating manure, inadequate energetic output limits its applicability. Food waste, however, is typically landfilled in current practice. Co-digestion of biowaste emerged as an alternative due to synergistic yield and capacity to handle multiple waste streams. However, its environmental performance is underreported, particularly in developing countries. This study aimed to compare the environmental implications o

Escherichia coli is a symbiotic bacterium in humans and animals and an important pathogen of humans and animals. Prevention and suppression of E. coli infection is of great concern. In this study, we isolated a strain of Lactobacillus agilis 32 from pig manure and evaluated its biological characteristics, and found that its bacterial survival rate was 25% after 4 h of treatment at pH 2, and under the condition of 0·5% bile concentration, its survival rate exceeds 30%. In addition, L. agilis 32 has a cell surface hydrophobicity of 77·8%, and exhibits 67·1% auto-aggregation and 63·2% aggregation

In present study, the taxonomic variation of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) in pig manure (PM) composting with coconut shell biochar (CSB) and bamboo biochar (BB) addition was investigated. The experiment was divided into three treatments: T1 (as control or without biochar amendment), T2 was added 10% coconut shell biochar and T3 supplemented with 10% bamboo biochar. The initial feed stock were properly homogenized using a mechanical crusher. PM and wheat straw (WS) were mixed in a 5: 1 dry weight ratio to adjust the initial carbon/nitrogen ratio 25:1, bulk density to ~0.5 (kg/L) and ~60%

China is the world's largest livestock and poultry breeding country, but also the largest use of veterinary antibiotics. When a large amount of chicken manure is applied to the soil, it will cause the number of antibiotic residues and resistant bacteria to increase, which will bring about the pollution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the soil, and then increase the risk of environmental pollution and human health. Field experiments were conducted to study the changes of soil tetracycline antibiotic residues, resistant bacteria and resistance genes treated with different types and dosa
