Oral fluid testing: new technology enables drug testing without embarrassment.

Drug abuse is a widespread problem across society, and its negative impact on performance and safety in the workplace cannot be overstated. Even as abuse of older, illicit drugs such as heroin, cocaine, marijuana, and amphetamines persists, new mind-altering chemicals continue to emerge, contributing to an ever-changing landscape of drug abuse and its physical and psychological consequences. Abuse of multiple drugs, and the combined use of alcohol and illicit and prescription drugs, have become increasingly common. The growing and continually evolving problem of drug abuse demands novel strate

The contribution of addictovigilance data to the French medical cannabis experimentation.

In France, cannabis is the most widely used illicit psychoactive substance. Recently, a new market for cannabidiol (CBD) products has emerged called "cannabis light" or "cannabis well-being". In parallel, the experimentation of medical cannabis began on March 26, 2021, for specific indications. Some clinical effects of cannabis have been put forward for medical purposes; however, these are counterbalanced by adverse events (AEs). Data from addictovigilance and international literature on the risks associated with non-medical cannabis use have helped establish exclusion criteria for patients at

[MEDICAL MARIJUANA DEPENDENCE AMONG CHRONIC PAIN PATIENTS SUFFERING FROM DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY].

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, medical marijuana (MM) is increasingly being used for the treatment of chronic pain. Depression and anxiety have been identified as risk factors for the problematic use of prescription opioids, yet their contribution to developing MM dependence hasn't been explored up to date. In this study we explored the association between depression and anxiety severity and the risk for cannabis dependence among chronic pain patients prescribed MM. METHODS: Participants were 324 chronic pain patients prescribed MM with no cuncurrent opioid treatment. All participants were sc

What Can Rats Tell Us about Adolescent Cannabis Exposure? Insights from Preclinical Research.

Marijuana is the most widely used drug of abuse among adolescents. Adolescence is a vulnerable period for brain development, during which time various neurotransmitter systems such as the glutamatergic, GABAergic, dopaminergic, and endocannabinoid systems undergo extensive reorganization to support the maturation of the central nervous system (CNS). ▵-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component of marijuana, acts as a partial agonist of CB1 cannabinoid receptors (CB1Rs). CB1Rs are abundant in the CNS and are central components of the neurodevelopmental changes that occur during ad

Self-administration of cocaine, cannabis and heroin in the human laboratory: benefits and pitfalls.

The objective of this review is to describe self-administration procedures for modeling addiction to cocaine, cannabis and heroin in the human laboratory, the benefits and pitfalls of the approach, and the methodological issues unique to each drug. In addition, the predictive validity of the model for testing treatment medications will be addressed. The results show that all three drugs of abuse are reliably and robustly self-administered by non-treatment-seeking research volunteers. In terms of pharmacotherapies, cocaine use is extraordinarily difficult to disrupt either in the laboratory or

Epidemiology of illicit and abused drugs in the general population, emergency department drug-related episodes, and arrestees.

National trends in substance abuse are presented: the civilian noninstitutionalized general population; drug-related emergency department episodes; and booked arrestees. Major metropolitan differences are also noted. This study was based on the primary national data systems for these groups: The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, SAMHSA's Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN), and the National Institute of Justice Drug Use Forecasting (DUF) system. While the most prevalent drug differed in the three data sources, all three sh

A systematic review of adverse events arising from the use of synthetic cannabinoids and their associated treatment.

CONTEXT: Synthetic cannabinoids (SCs) such as "Spice", "K2", etc. are widely available via the internet despite increasing legal restrictions. Currently, the prevalence of use is typically low in the general community (<1%) although it is higher among students and some niche groups subject to drug testing. Early evidence suggests that adverse outcomes associated with the use of SCs may be more prevalent and severe than those arising from cannabis consumption. OBJECTIVES: To identify systematically the scientific reports of adverse events associated with the consumption of SCs in the medical l

Marijuana and alcohol use in pregnancy.

The literature is sparse on the adverse effects of moderate alcohol consumption and marijuana use during pregnancy. Recent studies have evaluated the association of these drugs of abuse with pregnancy outcome, each using interview and medical record data of over 12 000 women. Children of marijuana users were more likely to have one or more major malformations, lower birthweight, and shorter gestation than children of nonusers. However, when logistic regression was used to control for other variables, these relationships were not statistically significant. The odds ratio for major malformations

Alcohol and marijuana use while driving--an unexpected crash risk in Pakistani commercial drivers: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: A significant proportion of road traffic crashes are attributable to alcohol and marijuana use while driving globally. Sale and use of both substances is illegal in Pakistan and is not considered a threat for road traffic injuries. However literature hints that this may not be the case. We did this study to assess usage of alcohol and marijuana in Pakistani commercial drivers. METHODS: A sample of 857 commercial bus and truck drivers was interviewed in October 2008 at the largest commercial vehicle station in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Pakistan. Time location cluster sampling was u

Collegiate Substance Use: A Tale of Differential Risk and Coping.

INTRODUCTION: Young adults reporting combined alcohol and marijuana use indicate greater frequency of other substances, binge drinking rates, and alcohol-related negative consequences. Emotion regulation (ER) difficulties are linked to alcohol use and abuse, with effects commonly attributed to increased mindfulness and distress tolerance abilities. Evidence is mixed, however, regarding the interactive impact of substance use and mindfulness facets on mental health outcomes. METHODS: The current study utilized a cross-sectional design to examine mental health outcomes predicted by ER and mindf

Women's Cigarette and Marijuana Use in Pregnancy: Identifying the Role of Past Versus Recent Violence Exposure.

Both cigarette smoking and marijuana use during pregnancy pose serious risks to healthy fetal development, yet little is known about the comparative contribution of recent versus past traumatic experiences to women's smoking behavior. The current study aimed to examine the relative contributions of childhood adversity and past year intimate partner violence (IPV) to women's cigarette and marijuana use during pregnancy in a high-risk, low-income sample. Participants (n = 101) were interviewed to evaluate past year IPV, childhood adversity, and cigarette and marijuana use. Results indicated that

Histological and Biochemical Alterations in the Superior Colliculus and Lateral Geniculate Nucleus of Juvenile Rats Following Prenatal Exposure to Marijuana Smoke.

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal exposure to Marijuana (MJN) has been associated with various brain deficits. The main activity in marijuana, Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), crosses the placenta and affects fetal brain development. Despite this, marijuana remains a commonly abused substance among pregnant women. The current study examined the histological and biochemical changes in the Superior Colliculus (SC) and Lateral Geniculate Nucleus (LGN) in rat brains prenatally exposed to marijuana. METHODS: Four groups of pregnant rats (n=5 rats/group) were exposed to the smoke of 10 g/kg marijuana at various

Pregnant adolescents with addictions.

Adolescence in the most formative time in the lives of women. During this time girls are making choices that have implications for the rest of their lives. Adolescence also can be a time when the negative impact of sexual and physical abuse from childhood begins to take its toll, contributing to adolescent pregnancy and substance abuse. In the last decade the incidences of pregnancy and drug use in the adolescent population have increased, with 80% of teenagers reported being sexually active by the age of 19 years and 80% of high school seniors reporting use of alcohol; 64% reporting smoking;
