This study examined concordant and discrepant alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use among couples to determine whether they predicted marital separation or divorce over 9 years. The study recruited 634 couples as they applied for their marriage licenses; we assessed them at that time and reassessed them with mailed questionnaires at their first, second, fourth, seventh, and ninth wedding anniversaries. Approximately 60% of the men and women were European American, and approximately 33% were African American. The frequency of drinking to intoxication and binge drinking (more than 5 drinks in an o

BACKGROUND: Multiple types of substance use are associated with HIV risk behaviors, but relatively little research has examined the association between marijuana use and risky sexual activities in treatment-seeking polysubstance abusing patients.
OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the relationship between marijuana use and sexual behaviors in 239 patients with cocaine, opioid or alcohol use disorders who were initiating outpatient substance use treatment.
METHODS: Participants completed the HIV Risk Behavior Scale and were classified into one of three groups based on their marijuana use histor

BACKGROUND: Despite the relatively high prevalence of marijuana use among college students, little information exists regarding health outcomes associated with different use patterns or trajectories.
METHODS: Seven annual personal interviews (years 1-7) were administered to 1253 individuals, beginning in their first year in college. Growth mixture modeling was used to identify trajectories of marijuana, alcohol, and tobacco use frequency during years 1-6. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the relationship between marijuana use trajectories and several year 7 health outcomes, holding co

Attention and memory deficits have been reported in heavy marijuana users, but these effects may be reversible after prolonged abstinence. It remains unclear whether the reversibility of these cognitive deficits indicates that chronic marijuana use does not alter cortical networks, or that such changes occur but the brain adapts to the drug-induced changes. Blood oxygenation-level dependent (BOLD) functional MRI (fMRI) was performed in 24 chronic marijuana users (12 abstinent and 12 active) and 19 age-, sex- and education-matched control subjects during a set of visual-attention tasks with gra

AIMS: To evaluate the construct and predictive validity of six different subtyping classifications selected on the basis of their empirical support in the literature on adolescent substance abuse.
METHODS: Typological data were collected from a heterogeneous sample of 600 adolescents presenting for marijuana treatment. The classification schemes were gender, onset age, family history, externalizing disorders, internalizing disorders and temperament. Subgroups were compared in terms of substance use frequency, substance abuse problems, social support for substance use, family conflict, school

BACKGROUND: Marijuana use is common in persons with HIV, but there is limited evidence of its relationship with potential health benefits or harms.
OBJECTIVE: The Marijuana Associated Planning and Long-term Effects (MAPLE) study was designed to evaluate the impact of marijuana use on HIV-related health outcomes, cognitive function, and systemic inflammation.
METHODS: The MAPLE study is a longitudinal cohort study of participants living with HIV who were recruited from 3 locations in Florida and were either current marijuana users or never regular marijuana users. At enrollment, participants

Marijuana, or cannabis, is the most commonly used illicit substance in the United States, with prevalence nearly doubling over the past decade. Accumulating evidence implicates cannabis use as a potentially modifiable risk factor for acute myocardial infarction, particularly among younger adults without traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Marijuana precipitates acute myocardial infarction through multiple converging mechanisms: increased myocardial oxygen demand via sympathetic activation, impaired oxygen delivery through carboxyhemoglobin elevation, coronary vasospasm, endothelial dysfun

Cannabis is increasingly used worldwide, yet its cardiovascular effects remain incompletely understood. Emerging evidence suggests that chronic cannabis use may contribute to coronary artery disease (CAD) through hemodynamic stress, endothelial dysfunction, and proinflammatory pathways. We present a report of two patients with significant CAD and long-term daily cannabis use, highlighting its potential role as a modifiable cardiovascular risk factor. We describe two patients with long-term daily cannabis use and significant CAD. The first was a 34-year-old man with minimal traditional cardiova

The prevalence of cannabis use for recreational and medicinal purposes has steadily increased. While it is commonly used to alleviate pain, its use is also associated with many acute and chronic adverse effects. There are cases reported on the negative impact of cannabis use on gastrointestinal (GI) disorders; however, there have been few reported cases linking cannabis use to acute pancreatitis. This case report discusses a 37-year-old female presenting to the emergency department for cannabis-induced acute pancreatitis. The purpose of this case report is to educate on the importance of recog

BACKGROUND: With the increasing legalization and popularity of marijuana, it is frequently and sometimes unintentionally combined with nicotine-containing products. As a consequence, patients may fail to accurately report usage during preoperative examinations or remain unaware of the inclusion of nicotine. This poses a challenge for clinicians in identifying preoperative nicotine exposure. This study aimed to establish normative data on the use of marijuana and nicotine in plastic surgery patients and correlate it with urine nicotine and cotinine levels.
METHODS: All consecutive patients pre

We estimate the long-term effect of using marijuana in adolescence on college and graduate degree attainment measured approximately 20 years later. We rely on the first two waves (1994-1996) and the fifth wave (2016-2018) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health and estimate instrumental variables models that exploit the network structure at the second degree by using marijuana use status of friends of friends who are not themselves friends of the respondent in order to instrument for the respondent's marijuana use. Our models also include school and grade fixed effects

Purpose Marijuana use has been increasing in the adolescent population. Our objective was to examine the prevalence of marijuana use among a sample of adolescents and young adults, determine an association with risk-taking behaviors, identify reported medical symptoms, and delineate common beliefs about marijuana use. Methods A questionnaire was administered to a sample of patients aged between 12 and 23 years old presenting to the emergency department of Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pennsylvania. Data were stratified by marijuana users and non-users, and further stratified by t

As decriminalization, increased access, and decreased perception of risk spurs the popularity of medical and recreational marijuana, more information is needed on possible links between marijuana use and social determinants of health. The goal of this study was to assess the relationships between marijuana use and exercise. Data sources included the two most recent waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Wave IV, 2008-2009; N = 14,784 and Wave V, 2016-2018; N = 12,043). The exercise variables included any form of exercise/sport during the past 7 days and the num

INTRODUCTION: As policies legalizing nonmedical marijuana have increased in states, understanding the implications of marijuana use among adolescents is increasingly important. This study uses nationally representative data to assess behavioral risk factors among students with different patterns of marijuana use.
METHODS: Data from the 2015 and 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Surveys, cross-sectional surveys conducted among a nationally representative sample of students in Grades 9-12 (n=30,389), were used to examine the association between self-reported current marijuana use status and self-report

Adolescence and young adulthood is a critical stage when the economic foundations for life-long health are established. To date, there is little consensus as to whether marijuana use is associated with poor educational and occupational success in adulthood. We investigated associations between trajectories of marijuana use from ages 15 to 28 and multiple indicators of economic well-being in young adulthood including achievement levels (i.e., educational attainment and occupational prestige), work characteristics (i.e., full vs part-time employment, hours worked, annual income), financial strai

OBJECTIVE: Substance use disorders often coexist with depression. The objective of this study was to establish whether pregnant women who report depressive symptomatology were more likely to report use of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana during pregnancy.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a secondary analysis of prospectively collected data from the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network Preterm Prediction Study. Self-reported history of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use was compared between pregnant women with and without depressive symptomatology with adjustment for demographic factors.
RESULTS: Afte

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between marijuana use and a composite adverse pregnancy outcome using biological sampling.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: Single tertiary center.
POPULATION: Young women (13-22 years old) with singleton, non-anomalous pregnancies delivered from September 2011 to May 2017.
METHODS: Exposure was defined as marijuana detected on universal urine toxicology testing or by self-report. Multivariable logistic regression modelling was used to estimate the effect of any marijuana use on the primary composite outcome. The effect of marijuana exposu

OBJECTIVES: Although the endogenous cannabinoid system modulates bowel function, our understanding of the impact of recreational marijuana (MJ) use on bowel motility is limited. This study examines the effect of MJ on self-reported bowel function among a large cohort of US adults.
METHODS: We identified adults (age: 20-59 years) who completed both the drug use and bowel health questionnaires in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey over a 6-year period from 2005 to 2010 (n = 9,645). Constipation and diarrhea were defined according to stool form (Bristol Stool Form Scale) and/or
