BACKGROUND: Mycetoma is a chronic subcutaneous tumefaction with presence of grains or granules. Etiological agents include bacteria or filamentous fungi. Mycetoma due to dermatophytes is uncommon, mainly occurring in Africa. To our knowledge, no case has been reported in the West Indies. Only two observations of Micosporum canis mycetoma in humans have been reported in the literature. We report a third case of mycetoma of the scalp caused by this fungus.
CASE REPORT: A 22-year-old woman from Martinique, French West Indies, presented with an indolent tumefaction of the scalp evolving over five

Since 1996, there have been several case reports of autochthonous visceral leishmaniasis in Thailand. Here we report a case in a 52-year-old Thai male from northern Thailand, who presented with subacute fever, huge splenomegaly and pancytopenia. Bone marrow aspiration revealed numerous amastigotes within macrophages. Isolation of Leishmania LSCM1 into culture and DNA sequence analysis (ribosomal RNA ITS-1 and large subunit of RNA polymerase II) revealed the parasites to be members of the Leishmania enriettii complex, and apparently identical to L. martiniquensis previously reported from the Ca

A 27-year-old patient, originally from Martinique, presented with a progressive hepatic granulomatosis with hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, and non-icteric cholestasis, associated with bronchial granulomatosis lesions. The sarcoidosis regressed rapidly after high doses (60 mg/day) of prednisone. Portal hypertension developed later and provoked a severe hematemesis from rupture of esophageal varices. Signs of pulmonary arterial hypertension were then observed, and the diagnosis confirmed by pressure tests after catheterization, and angiography. A portocaval shunt caused the esophageal varices to su

In French overseas Departments and Territories, Leptospiroses exist. In the Caribbean zone, human Leptospiroses are frequently found; in Martinique island, and some cases are recorded in French Guyana. In the Indian Ocean, "La Réunion" island, approximately 40 cases are diagnosed every year (mortality rate: 17%). In Polynesian areas, 3 serovars are found. Biological diagnosis is easier now with screening tests. Sera are to be sent to the National Leptospirosis Centre, Paris, for confirmatory test. In fact, the high incidence of Icterohaemorrhagiae serogroup does not seem to reflect the real si

INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell disease is a multi-faceted disease, which can affect all organs. Here, we report the case of a young woman whose clinical presentation was confusing.
CASE REPORT: An 18-year-old patient from Martinique in Caribbean area presented to the emergency room with widespread pain, as part of a vaso-occlusive crisis. She reported being followed for SS sickle cell anemia, with a history of vaso-occlusive crises and exchange transfusions in the past. Her hemoglobin rate was 83g/L. She was treated with opioid analgesics. Then, she presented several generalized tonic-clonic seizu

Leptospirosis is the most widespread zoonosis in the world. Humans become infected through contact with the urine of carrier animals, directly or via contaminated environments. This review reports available data on animal leptospirosis in ten tropical islands: Barbados, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Grenada, Trinidad, New Caledonia, Hawaii, French Polynesia, La Réunion and Mayotte. Leptospirosis is endemic in these insular wild and domestic fauna. Each island presents a specific panel of circulating serovars, closely linked with animal and environmental biodiversity, making it epidemiologically diff

Human T cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) sequences were sought in labial salivary glands of patients with HTLV-I-associated myelopathy or tropical spastic paraparesis and of seropositive neurologically healthy carriers. HTLV-I proviral DNA was found by polymerase chain reaction amplification in DNA extracted from lip biopsies of every patient. Viral RNA was found by in situ hybridization in the acini epithelium, as well as in lymphocytic infiltrates. This observation suggests that HTLV-I expression in labial salivary glands could participate in the inflammatory lesions observed in these pat

Leishmania infantum is the only species occurring in metropolitan France; located in the Mediterranean part of the country, it is responsible for a highly enzootic canine disease, while the human endemicity is low, with about 23 cases yearly reported to the National Reference Centre of Leishmaniases, mainly visceral forms. In French Guyana, five Leishmania species occur in the Amazonian forest, of which L. guyanensis is the predominant species, and L. braziliensis is responsible for the most critical forms. The most frequent clinical feature is cutaneous leishmaniasis, with a mean annual incid

Sickle cell trait (SCT) affects approximately 8% of the population in Martinique (FWI) and about the same rate is found among the African Americans. In several regions of tropical Africa, up to 40% of individuals are also affected. SCT has been characterized as a benign condition and patients are currently asymptomatic or run a benign course. However, life-threatening complications may occur. SCT can be detected in patients hospitalized for various complaints, and SCT likely causes serious morbidity and mortality in some people. Moreover, these clinical observations have been supported by seve

Examination on G6PD deficiency in 349 patients of Shekii district hospital (Azerbaijan) revealed 16 hemi-, 4 homo- and 9 heterozygotic carriers of the defect. Gd- frequency, calculated from the data obtained (7.7%), may be compared to neighbouring regions' frequencies (6-30%). Carriers of G6PD deficiency are residents of 11 villages located in Alasani-Aphtalan valley, highly endemic with malaria in the past; nearly all marriages are endogamic. Physico-chemical and kinetic study of 10 mutant forms of G6PD, according to WHO program, led to identification of 5 variants of the II class (Shekii, Bi

OBJECTIVES: In COVID-19 patients, bacterial and fungal pulmonary coinfections, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, or Aspergillus, have been reported, but to our knowledge, no case has been reported due to Pasteurella multocida.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We describe three cases of Pasteurella multocida coinfections occurring during the 4th wave of COVID-19 in Martinique (French West Indies).
RESULTS: All three cases were fatal; thus, Pasteurella multocida has to be considered as a potentially severe coinfection agent.
CONCLUSIONS: Alteration of the e

The Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) has been reported as a possible complication of acute chikungunya infection. The chikungunya epidemics, which occurred in Martinique and Guadeloupe in 2014, affected 308,000 people in these two islands. GBS occurred during or immediately after acute chikungunya infection in 13 patients (10 men, three women; mean age: 61 years). Median time from acute chikungunya to GBS onset was 9 days. Twelve patients were treated with intravenous polyvalent immunoglobulins, nine of whom improved within 7 days. Five of 13 patients required mechanical ventilation. Two patients

First observed in France in 1999, Aedes albopictus (tiger mosquito) is now established in almost all French departments. As a vector of arboviruses, in particular dengue fever, A. albopictus represents a real threat in Europe, where 304 autochthonous cases of dengue fever were reported in 2024, four times more than the total number of cases reported during the entire 2010-2021 period. Although dengue is asymptomatic in the majority of cases, it can cause severe forms of the disease as hemorrhagic fever (less than 5% of cases). In the context of an unprecedented number of imported cases since t

Among the opportunistic mycoses that are emerging in patients with immunosuppression or severe underlying illness, many isolates lack of characteristic sporulation and until recently could not be identified. Clinical signs are mostly nonspecific and therefore such infections have often been disregarded. In the present paper we describe a novel, nonsporulating fungal species causing subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis in two patients of different origin. One is a 73-year-old female from Martinique who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, while the other case concerns a 72-year-old male from Mexico wh

Fungi belonging to the genus Scytalidium are widespread around the world. Among them, two species are responsible for human superficial infections mimicking dermatophytosis: Neoscytalidium dimidiatum and Scytalidium hyalinum. Whereas these ascomycetous fungi are endemic in tropical or subtropical countries, both species have a different geographical distribution. Scytalidiosis represents approximately 40% of dermatomycoses in these areas. A few cases of invasive infections due to Scytalidium sp. have also been reported, assessing the ability of these fungi to behave as opportunists. Here we ha

Fasciola hepatica, the aetiological agent of fascioliasis in the Caribbean region, occurs throughout the major islands of the Greater Antilles and in localised zones on two islands (Martinique and Saint Lucia) of the Lesser Antilles. However, apart from Puerto Rico, information regarding human fascioliasis in islands of the Caribbean is out of date or unavailable, or even nonexistent as in Haiti. The authors conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional serological survey in Port-au-Prince using a Western blotting test (LDBIO Diagnostics) on human fascioliasis in Haiti. A total of 216 serum sampl

Total aerobic bacteria and fluorescent pseudomonads were counted in bulk and rhizospheric soils of banana plants of 14 plantations in Martinique (French West Indies). Fluorescent Pseudomonas isolates were then identified and investigated for in vitro antagonism towards Cylindrocladium sp., a fungal pathogen of banana roots. Total aerobic bacteria and fluorescent pseudomonads were significantly more abundant in rhizospheric soils than in bulk soils. Among 58 fluorescent Pseudomonas isolates, 41 were identified as Pseudomonas fluorescens biovar V and 17 as Ps. putida biovar A. Six strains exhibi

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of primary HIV infection is a crucial element in the fight against the AIDS epidemic. Clinical manifestations associated with primary infection are nonspecific. Dengue is a possible differential diagnosis.
CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old adolescent living in Martinique consulted for a syndrome suggestive of infectious mononucleosis. The annual dengue epidemic was at its acme at this time. Serum was positive for IgM and the diagnosis of dengue was retained. The diagnosis of recent HIV infection was made two months later (unprotected homosexual intercourse two weeks before

Bothrops lanceolatus is an endemic Crotalidae species in Martinique, where approximately 30 cases of envenoming are managed yearly. Envenoming characteristics from Bothrops species include local tissue damage, systemic bleeding, and hemodynamic alterations. We hereby report a case of severe envenomation following B. lanceolatus snakebite to the right calf. Severe local manifestations developed progressively up to the lower limb despite adequate antivenom therapy. Systemic manifestations of venom also occurred, resulting in intensive care therapy.
