Dexamethasone is the glucocorticoid of choice in many human inflammatory and immune-mediated conditions, given its reported effectiveness and limited side effect profile. In veterinary medicine, the glucocorticoid of choice is prednisone, however the safety of longer-term use of dexamethasone has not previously been studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety, effectiveness and side effects of dexamethasone use as the glucocorticoid treatment for masticatory muscle myositis in dogs - an immune-mediated inflammatory condition. 93% of dogs showed a clinical improvement within two w

OBJECTIVES: Pain-related temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are the most prevalent conditions among TMDs. There is contrasting evidence available for association of pain-related TMD and masticatory muscle activity (MMA). The present investigation assesses the associations between MMA levels of masseter and temporalis muscles during awake and sleep among pain-related TMD diagnostic groups.
SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION: The department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences, University at Buffalo. Twenty females and six males participated in this study.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using the diagnostic criteria

OBJECTIVES: Headaches are a common complaint in temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients. However, few studies have compared the symptom characteristics between TMD patients with and without a complaint of headache. The aim of this study was to compare subjective symptoms and treatment outcomes between myofascial TMD patients who had a chief complaint of headache and those who did not.
METHODS: One hundred sixty one patients underwent comprehensive examinations and scored their pre- and post-treatment symptoms on a form (4 items assessing pain intensity and 1 assessing sleeping difficulty).

Rhabdomyomas are rare benign mesenchymal tumors with skeletal muscle differentiation and a predilection for the head and neck area. A 38-year-old man presented with persistent, slowly growing, painless swelling in the left inner cheek for 2½ years. The lesion was detected during routine dental examination and was considered to represent a mucocele. The mass was removed via a transoral surgical approach, followed by a local recurrence 6 months later that was again surgically removed. The patient is alive and well 2 months after last surgery. Adult-type rhabdomyoma is a rare, occasionally recurr

It has been suggested that craniofacial morphology plays an important role in masticatory function, however, there are controversies and unsolved questions that still require elucidation. The aims of this study were to evaluate masticatory performance, mandibular movement, electromyographic (EMG) activity and muscle effort of masseter and anterior temporal muscles during mastication. Seventy-eight dentate subjects were selected and divided into three groups according to vertical facial pattern: brachyfacial, mesofacial and dolichofacial. Silicon-based material was used for chewing tests. Masti

OBJECTIVES: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is the most common sleep breathing disorder. Treatment of mild to moderate OSA includes mandibular advancement devices (MAD). The varying degrees of mandibular protrusion induced by MADs affect the 3-dimensional arrangement of masticatory muscles. This pilot study aimed to observe the effects of different mandibular protrusions on masticatory muscle features and upper airways in one healthy participant.
STUDY DESIGN: Anatomical and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the cephalic region of one 24-years-old healthy

Introduction: Individuals diagnosed with Down syndrome (DS) often exhibit muscle hypotonia, particularly affecting the facial and oropharyngeal muscles involved in the mastication cycle. This condition impairs essential functions such as swallowing, speech, and chewing. Moreover, lingual hypotonia in individuals with DS can lead to problems such as snoring, obstructive sleep apnea, and bruxism. The aim of the present study was to investigate the activity of the masticatory muscles (masseter and temporalis) in individuals with DS and bruxism through electromyographic analyses before and after t

INTRODUCTION: Sonoelastography has been increasingly used for non-invasive evaluation of the mechanical features of human tissues. The interplay between orofacial pain and regional muscle activity appears clinically paramount, although only few imaging studies have investigated this association. Using shear wave sonoelastography (SWS), this study ascertained whether orofacial pain induced alterations in the stiffness of superficial and deep masticatory muscles.
METHODS: All participants were systematically evaluated for oral/facial-related conditions, including the area and intensity of pain.

The authors present a case of a 42-year-old female admitted for disabling complex and atypical bilateral facial spasms associated with painful masticatory and motor ocular dystonic movements, difficult to fit in the definition of any known cranio-facial dyskinesias. MRI showed a left PICA loop invaginated into the brainstem, considered responsible of an hyperactive disorder of the brainstem nuclei neighboring the conflict. After microvascular decompression, the patient made a full recovery with complete disappearance of the paroxystic phenomena. Such a type of image should be searched for, in
