BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has become a global pandemic with a dramatic impact on healthcare systems. Concern for viral transmission necessitates the investigation of otologic procedures that use high-speed drilling instruments, including mastoidectomy, which we hypothesized to be an aerosol-generating procedure.
METHODS: Mastoidectomy with a high-speed drill was simulated using fresh-frozen cadaveric heads with fluorescein solution injected into the mastoid air cells. Specimens were drilled for 1-minute durations in test conditions with and without a microscope. A barrier drape was fashioned from

Two hundred forty-three patients underwent from 1984 to 1989 open (OT) or closed (CT) tympanoplasty and mastoidectomy, generally for cholesteatoma or non-cholesteatomatous chronic suppurant otitis media with some type of destruction of the ossicular chain. The results of the audiometric studies of 8 groups who underwent the same surgical technique using plastipore PORP or TORP, or autologous ossicle or cortical mastoid bone, were compared statistically after 2 years of evolution. Except for one of them, none of groups studied presented statistically significant differences, but the existence o

Iatrogenic brain herniation, with meninges (meningoencephalocele) or without meninges (encephalocele), following mastoidectomy is rare. However, the seriousness of the complication and the potential for its prevention necessitate periodic review and emphasis. In this study, 6 patients with small iatrogenic dural injury during mastoidectomy, 1 patient with postoperative large encephalocele, and 2 patients with three spontaneous meningoencephaloceles are reviewed. These cases, and the literature, support the following: 1. A dural injury is necessary for herniation. 2. If the arachnoid remains in

PURPOSE: Retraction pocket (RP) is a common event affecting the middle ear when a negative pressure within it causes a retraction of a single part of the tympanic membrane (TM). Patients can be asymptomatic or can experience hearing loss, fullness feeling and/or ear discharge. RP can be stable or develop a cholesteatoma; aim of the study was to investigate if mastoidectomy may play a role in the surgical management of patients suffering from RP, both reporting our experience and discussing the existing literature.
METHODS: Fifty-one patients affected by RP were referred for surgery and random

OBJECTIVES: To assess bone conduction (BC) thresholds following radical mastoidectomy and subtotal petrosectomy, in which the tympanic membrane and the ossicular chain, responsible for osseous BC mechanisms, are surgically removed. The removal of the tympanic membrane and the ossicular chain would reduce the contributions to BC threshold of the following four osseous BC mechanisms: the occlusion effect of the external ear, middle ear ossicular chain inertia, inner ear fluid inertia, and distortion (compression-expansion) of the walls of the inner ear.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: BC thresholds were
