Perinatal exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances impairs maternal care and induces depressive-like behavior in mice.

Postpartum mental health disorders are a critical yet understudied aspect of maternal health. Exposure to environmental toxicants such as per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has been associated with adverse health outcomes, including reproductive and neurobehavioral dysfunction, whereas their specific effects on maternal behavior and mental health remain poorly characterized. This study investigated the effects of perinatal exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of a PFAS mixture comprising 10 individual PFAS (PFHxA, PFPeA, PFHpA, PFBA, perfluorooctanoic acid [PFOA], PFOS,

Maternal separation and post-weaning feeding behavior in rodents: A critical review and meta-analysis.

Child neglect is a worldwide phenomenon that is associated with an increased risk of suffering from eating disorders. We aimed to examine the impact of child neglect on eating behaviors using two animal models of developmental disruption, maternal separation and maternal deprivation (MS and MD). The search resulted in 38 relevant studies, and datasets were divided into two meta-analytical analyses - for regular and palatable food intake (RFI and PFI). Procedure, sex and developmental stage were investigated as potential moderators in the RFI analysis and procedure, sex and main macronutrient i

Maternal Childhood Trauma and Children's Developmental Course of Aggressive Behavior from Ages 4 to 12.

OBJECTIVE: A growing literature documents the intergenerational effects of maternal childhood trauma (MCT) on offspring developmental outcomes. However, cross-sectional designs of prior studies limit understanding of long-term effects of MCT on the next generation. We examined the long-term association of MCT with the developmental trajectory of their children's aggressive behavior from preschool years to preadolescence, while considering maternal psychological distress as a potential mediator in a high-risk sample. METHOD: Mother-child dyads (N = 256; 55% girls), urban, primarily African Ame

Exposure to War Prior to Conception: Maternal Emotional Distress Forecasts Sex-Specific Child Behavior Problems.

OBJECTIVES: Exposure to maternal stress during the prenatal period adversely affects child outcomes. Recent investigations have shifted to an even earlier period, the preconception period, to better understand the role of this formative period in human health and disease. We investigated the links between maternal emotional distress following preconception exposure to war, and child outcomes at age 10. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Before becoming pregnant, mothers were exposed to missile bombardment on the north of Israel in the 2006 war. Mothers who conceived within 12 months after the war were rec

Early motor behavior of infants exposed to maternal mental health disorders - A South African perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past five decades the bulk of research on exposure to maternal mental health disorders and infant neurodevelopment has been generated in high-income countries. The current study included infants, residing in low-income communities in South Africa, born to mothers with a history of psychiatric disorders. AIM: To assess the motor behavior of 10- to 20-week-old infants exposed to maternal mental health disorders, and a subgroup of infants with prenatal psychotropic medication exposure. METHODS: The present study is a cross-sectional descriptive study, with a longitudinal

Neonatal maternal deprivation facilitates the expression of a panic-like escape behavior in adult rats.

A wealth of evidence associates disruptions of the parent-infant relationship (e.g. childhood parental loss or parental neglect) with the later appearance of panic disorder. In rodents, neonatal maternal separation and maternal deprivation (MD) are reported to increase the expression of anxiety-related defensive responses in adult animals. However, little is known about the long-term consequences of these early-life stressors in animal models of panic. We here investigated the effects of a single 24 h-episode of MD on post-natal day 11 (PND 11) in adult male Wistar rats submitted to two animal

Controlled Antenatal Thyroid Screening II: Effect of Treating Maternal Suboptimal Thyroid Function on Child Behavior.

CONTEXT & OBJECTIVES: The Controlled Antenatal Thyroid Screening (CATS) study was the first randomized controlled trial to investigate effects of treating suboptimal gestational thyroid function (SGTF) on child cognition. Since observational studies indicated that SGTF may also increase symptoms of autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the CATS cohort was used to investigate whether treatment of mothers affected their children's behavior. DESIGN & PARTICIPANTS: Mothers (N = 475) completed 3 questionnaires: the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), the Child ADH

Systematic review and meta-analysis: effects of maternal separation on anxiety-like behavior in rodents.

The mechanisms by which childhood maltreatment increases anxiety is unclear, but a propensity for increased defensive behavior in rodent models of early life stress (ELS) suggests that work in rodents may clarify important mechanistic details about this association. A key challenge in studying the effects of ELS on defensive behavior in rodents is the plethora of inconsistent results. This is particularly prominent with the maternal separation (MS) literature, one of the most commonly used ELS models in rodents. To address this issue we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis, examinin

Reciprocal Relations Between Maternal Depression and Child Behavior Problems in Families Served by Head Start.

This study used longitudinal cross-lagged modeling to examine reciprocal relations between maternal depression and child behavior problems. Data were drawn from 3,119 children (40% Hispanic, 30% African American, 20% White, and 10% other) from the Family and Child Experiences Survey of 2009 (a nationally representative sample of children served by Head Start). Results documented reciprocal relations between maternal depression and child behavior problems across early childhood (i.e., child age 3-5). Furthermore, the effect of child behavior problems on maternal depression was moderated by chil

Maternal testosterone exposure increases anxiety-like behavior and impacts the limbic system in the offspring.

During pregnancy, women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) display high circulating androgen levels that may affect the fetus and increase the risk of mood disorders in offspring. This study investigated whether maternal androgen excess causes anxiety-like behavior in offspring mimicking anxiety disorders in PCOS. The PCOS phenotype was induced in rats following prenatal androgen (PNA) exposure. PNA offspring displayed anxiety-like behavior in the elevated plus maze, which was reversed by flutamide [androgen receptor (AR) blocker] and tamoxifen [selective estrogen receptor (ER) modulator].

Semax attenuates the influence of neonatal maternal deprivation on the behavior of adolescent white rats.

Maternal deprivation in the early postnatal period significantly affects the behavior and development of different animals. Here we studied delayed effects of daily maternal deprivation (5 h/day) on physical development and behavior of white rats during postnatal days 1 to 14. Here we studied the possibility of reducing the negative consequences of deprivation by daily intranasal treatment with Semax, an analog of ACTH(4-10), in a dose of 0.05 mg/kg from postnatal days 15 to 28. It was found that maternal deprivation decelerated the growth of young rats, boosted physical activity and emotional

Effects of Chronic Central Arginine Vasopressin (AVP) on Maternal Behavior in Chronically Stressed Rat Dams.

Exposure of mothers to chronic stressors during pregnancy or the postpartum period often leads to the development of depression, anxiety, or other related mood disorders. The adverse effects of mood disorders are often mediated through maternal behavior and recent work has identified arginine vasopressin (AVP) as a key neuropeptide hormone in the expression of maternal behavior in both rats and humans. Using an established rodent model that elicits behavioral and physiological responses similar to human mood disorders, this study tested the effectiveness of chronic AVP infusion as a novel trea

Maternal alcohol and pentazocine abuse: neonatal behavior and morphology in an opposite-sex twin pair.

A pair of preterm, opposite-sex twins were examined during the lying-in period for behavioral and morphological effects of maternal alcohol and pentazocine abuse during pregnancy. A few morphological features typical of fetal alcohol syndrome were observed in each infant, and the male infant only was above the standardized mean in minor physical anomalies. The male's behavioral scores were more likely to be deviant from the standardized mean than the female's. Specifically, the male was more irritable, both spontaneously and in response to specific stimuli; highly active while awake and handle

The ability of oxytocin to induce short latency maternal behavior is dependent on peripheral anosmia.

Nulliparous female Sprague-Dawley rats, cannulated in the left lateral ventricle, were ovariectomized and estrogen primed, then either rendered anosmic via intranasal irrigation with zinc sulfate or left with intact olfaction. Forty-eight hr later, after a 2-hr habituation to the test cage, these animals were injected with either intracerebroventricular oxytocin (400 ng in 2 microliter saline) or saline (2 microliter). Only the group receiving both zinc sulfate and oxytocin became maternal. Additionally, approximately one third of the olfaction-intact rats and none of the anosmic rats cannibal

Developmental pathways from maternal history of childhood maltreatment and maternal depression to toddler attachment and early childhood behavioral outcomes.

The current study examined the development of toddler attachment and early childhood behavior among children of mothers with a history of childhood maltreatment and current major depressive disorder. Maternal depression, maternal sensitivity, and toddler attachment were assessed as mediators of the association between maternal history of childhood maltreatment and child internalizing and externalizing behavior. Participants were from a low-income, largely racial minority urban sample and included 123 mothers with (n = 69) and without (n = 54) major depressive disorder at baseline and their chi

Effect and mechanism of maternal prolactin levels on depressive-like behavior in prenatally stressed offspring.

Prenatal stress (PS) has an adverse impact on the neurodevelopment of the fetus and increases the risk of depression in offspring. Prolactin (PRL), a polypeptide hormone released by the pituitary gland, has a promising neuroprotective effect. However, it is not clear whether the decline in PRL levels during gestation is related to the depressive-like behavior of offspring caused by PS. This study aimed to assess the role and mechanism of PRL during gestation on depressive-like behavior in PS offspring rats. We found that PS led to a marked decrease in serum PRL levels of the maternal rats, acc

Maternal Tryptophan Supplementation Alters Offspring Gut-Brain Axis and Behavior in a Sex-Specific Manner.

The maternal diet is a key determinant of offspring neurodevelopment, influencing gut microbiota composition and the gut-brain axis. These interactions are critical in shaping sex-specific vulnerabilities to neuropsychiatric disorders. Tryptophan, an essential amino acid and precursor to serotonin, plays a pivotal role in neurodevelopment and immune function. However, the impact of maternal tryptophan supplementation on healthy offspring's neurochemical and behavioral outcomes remains unclear. This study investigated the effects of a tryptophan-enriched maternal diet on offspring gut microbiot

Peripartum buprenorphine and oxycodone exposure impair maternal behavior and increase neuroinflammation in new mother rats.

7 % of pregnant people use opioids. Opioid use during pregnancy can negatively impact maternal and offspring health. Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), commonly buprenorphine, are the recommended treatment for opioid use disorder during pregnancy to prevent cycles of withdrawal and relapse. In addition to effects on opioid receptors, opioids have strong binding affinity to toll-like receptor (TLR) 4, an immune cell receptor, and thereby impact neuroinflammatory signaling. We have previously shown that neuroimmune alterations are important for the display of maternal behavior. Here, we

Relations between maternal parenting styles and callous-unemotional behavior in Chinese children: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on maternal parenting styles and children's callous-unemotional behavior (CU behavior) have focused on the West, and few studies have examined the longitudinal relationship between maternal parenting styles and CU behavior using Chinese preschoolers as subjects. OBJECTIVE: Through a 1.5-year longitudinal lens, this study probed the relations between maternal parenting styles and CU behavior in the Chinese cultural setting. PARTICIPANTS: Participants were N = 492 Chinese young children (Mage = 52.44 months, SD = 5.00, 48 % girls). METHODS: At Time 1 (T1), mothers
