Perspectives of Mauritians living with neurological disability and their family caregivers during the COVID-19 lockdown: a thematic analysis from an African nation.

INTRODUCTION: Mauritians living with neurological disability face limited medical care, accessibility issues, and cultural stigma, which prevent community reintegration. We aimed to investigate the perspectives of Mauritians with neurological disability and their family caregivers during COVID-19 lockdown. METHODS: following a phenomenological epistemology, this qualitative study employed an inductive reflexive thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with neurorehabilitation patients (N=18) and their primary caregivers (N=22). Patients with stroke (N=22), spinal cord injury (N=11), an

Significant variance in genetic diversity among populations of Schistosoma haematobium detected using microsatellite DNA loci from a genome-wide database.

BACKGROUND: Urogenital schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma haematobium is widely distributed across Africa and is increasingly being targeted for control. Genome sequences and population genetic parameters can give insight into the potential for population- or species-level drug resistance. Microsatellite DNA loci are genetic markers in wide use by Schistosoma researchers, but there are few primers available for S. haematobium. METHODS: We sequenced 1,058,114 random DNA fragments from clonal cercariae collected from a snail infected with a single Schistosoma haematobium miracidium. We assem

Bruguiera gymnorhiza (L.) Lam. at the Forefront of Pharma to Confront Zika Virus and Microbial Infections-An In Vitro and In Silico Perspective.

The recent emergence of Zika virus (ZIKV) in Brazil and the increasing resistance developed by pathogenic bacteria to nearly all existing antibiotics should be taken as a wakeup call for the international authority as this represents a risk for global public health. The lack of antiviral drugs and effective antibiotics on the market triggers the need to search for safe therapeutics from medicinal plants to fight viral and microbial infections. In the present study, we investigated whether a mangrove plant, Bruguiera gymnorhiza (L.) Lam. (B. gymnorhiza) collected in Mauritius, possesses antimic

The global, regional, and national patterns of change in the burden of chronic kidney disease from 1990 to 2021.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major global public health problem with increasing prevalence and a huge health and economic burden. Diabetes mellitus and hypertension are major risk factors for CKD, and CKD is associated with cardiovascular disease and end-stage renal disease. Understanding the prevalence and burden of CKD is essential for the development of prevention and control strategies. METHODS: Using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2021 study, this study analyzed the incidence, prevalence, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of CKD at global, re

[Human diffusion of arthropod disease vectors throughout the world].

The present distribution of animals and plants throughout the world is the result of an evolutionary process involving tectonic, climatic and biotic factors. Humans, since their appearance, have contributed to the spreading of many species including disease vectors and pests. When humans left their native African home, they brought with them ectoparasites such as lice and acarids. During the neolithic era, humans were leading domesticated animals which carried their own parasites into new areas. Dwelling commensals, flea, bugs, triatomids, flies, and cockroaches followed human migrations. In t

Maternal mortality ratios in Southeast Asia (1990-2021): trends, disparities, and projections through 2050 based on the global burden of disease 2021, with reference to SDG 3.1.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality remains a critical barrier to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.1 (target: Maternal mortality ratios (MMR) < 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030). Southeast Asia accounts for ~ 20% of global maternal deaths, with substantial disparities between and within countries. This study analyzed trends (1990–2021) and projected (to 2050) MMR in Southeast Asia using the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 database, addressing gaps in regional granularity. METHODS: Data GBD 2021, covering MMR and age-standardized MMR (ASMR) for 1990–2021, stratified by countr

Impact of classical risk factors of type 2 diabetes among Asian Indian, Chinese and Japanese populations.

AIMS: This review investigated the population impact of major modifiable type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk factors, with special focus on native Asian Indians, to estimate population attributable risks (PARs) and compare them with estimates from Chinese and Japanese populations. METHODS: Information was obtained on risk factors in 21,041 Asian Indian, 17,774 Chinese and 17,986 Japanese populations from multiple, large, cross-sectional studies (the DECODA project) of T2D. Crude and adjusted PARs were estimated for the major T2D risk factors. RESULTS: Age had the highest crude and adjusted PARs among

Dengue virus importation risks in Africa: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Dengue is a significant global public health concern that poses a threat in Africa. Particularly, African countries are at risk of viral introductions through air travel connectivity with areas of South America and Asia in which explosive dengue outbreaks frequently occur. Limited reporting and diagnostic capacity hinder a comprehensive assessment of continent-wide transmission dynamics and deployment of surveillance strategies in Africa. In this study, we aimed to identify African airports at high risk of receiving passengers with dengue from Asia, Latin America, and other African

Cannabis and amphetamine use among school-going adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa: a multi-country analysis of prevalence and associated factors.

BACKGROUND: Global evidence indicates that early onset of illicit substance use among adolescents and emerging adults is associated with negative mental-health related-outcomes that can persist into adulthood. However, the lack of quality regional data on adolescent illicit substance use and its determinants remains a common barrier to evidence-based policy-making and the development of school-based interventions in Africa. The purpose of our study was to estimate the prevalence and describe the correlates of cannabis and amphetamine use among school-going adolescents in eight sub-Saharan Afri

Transmission and diversity of Schistosoma haematobium and S. bovis and their freshwater intermediate snail hosts Bulinus globosus and B. nasutus in the Zanzibar Archipelago, United Republic of Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: The Zanzibar Archipelago (Pemba and Unguja islands) is targeted for the elimination of human urogenital schistosomiasis caused by infection with Schistosoma haematobium where the intermediate snail host is Bulinus globosus. Following multiple studies, it has remained unclear if B. nasutus (a snail species that occupies geographically distinct regions on the Archipelago) is involved in S. haematobium transmission on Zanzibar. Additionally, S. haematobium was thought to be the only Schistosoma species present on the Zanzibar Archipelago until the sympatric transmission of S. bovis, a

Prevalence and pattern of waterborne parasitic infections in eastern Africa: A systematic scoping review.

Waterborne parasitic diseases form one of common and important public health and economic problems in low- and middle-income countries, though little is known on the burden and patterns of these diseases in most regions. This systematic scoping review informs on the prevalence and pattern of waterborne parasitic infections in eastern Africa from 1st of January 1941 to 31st of December 2019. The review found limited number of published studies on waterborne parasitic diseases, though 13 of the 15 studied countries in eastern Africa provided one or more published report(s) totalling 47 reports.

[Malaria is still a leading cause of fever and death among children and pregnant women in Africa in 2015].

The prevalence and morbidity of P. vivax, P. ovale (curisi et wallikeri) and P. malariae remain underestimated. However important progress has been made. According to the WHO World Malaria report between 2000 and 2015 the malaria incidence has decreased by 42% while the incidence of malaria deaths has decreased by 66%. This is the result of the important progress made in scaling up the main interventions such the rapid diagnosis test, Artemisinin-based combination therapies, long lasting insecticide treated nets, indoor residual house spraying, intermittent preventive treatment during pregnanc

The mother's participation in infant carrying in captive groups of Leontopithecus chrysomelas and Callithrix jacchus.

Ecosystem degradation worldwide causes biodiversity loss and negatively impacts their functioning, eroding the services they provide to the detriment of society and human well-being. The magnitude of this crisis makes ecological restoration a global priority, but progress has been hampered by a variety of factors including a low uptake of evidence-based management by practitioners, limited monitoring of restoration success, and social and political drivers occurring in competitive, multi-stakeholder management contexts. Exploring practitioners' opinions, perceptions and motivations can thus pr

Early maternal and paternal bonding, childhood physical abuse and adult psychopathic personality.

BACKGROUND: A significant gap in the literature on risk factors for psychopathy is the relative lack of research on parental bonding.MethodThis study examines the cross-sectional relationship between maternal and paternal bonding, childhood physical abuse and psychopathic personality at age 28 years in a community sample of 333 males and females. It also assesses prospectively whether children separated from their parents in the first 3 years of life are more likely to have a psychopathic-like personality 25 years later. RESULTS: Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that: (1) poor paren

Timing of seasonal influenza epidemics for 25 countries in Africa during 2010-19: a retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Using country-specific surveillance data to describe influenza epidemic activity could inform decisions on the timing of influenza vaccination. We analysed surveillance data from African countries to characterise the timing of seasonal influenza epidemics to inform national vaccination strategies. METHODS: We used publicly available sentinel data from African countries reporting to the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance and Response FluNet platform that had 3-10 years of data collected during 2010-19. We calculated a 3-week moving proportion of samples positive for influenza virus

A review of the genus Pempheris (Perciformes, Pempheridae) of the Red Sea, with description of a new species.

Four species of the fish genus Pempheris are recognized for the Red Sea: P. adusta Bleeker, 1877; P. mangula Cuvier, 1829; P. nesogallica Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1831; and a new species P. tominagai. All are wide-ranging in the western Indian Ocean, and P. mangula has migrated via the Suez Canal to the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Morphological and genetic analysis of 15 species in this genus show that P. adusta, a widely distributed species, that can't be divided into different species, because of the continuity of morphologies and distribution, and lack of variance in genetics between

Sex-related inequalities in current cigarette smoking among adolescents in Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Risky behaviours, including tobacco use, are highly prevalent among adolescents worldwide. Although these behaviours are largely influenced by various sociodemographic factors, including sex, there is a paucity of regionally representative literature on the sex-related inequalities in cigarette smoking among adolescents in Africa. This study examined the sex-based disparities in current cigarette smoking among adolescents aged 13-15 years in Africa. METHODS: The present study employed a secondary analysis of nationally representative data on 45 African countries obtained from th
