The aim of this study was to identify the shape and route of the bony canal of the posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA) and posterior superior alveolar nerve (PSAN) using different identification methods, including computed tomography (CT), panoramic radiograph, and macroscopic evaluation (corpse and dry skull). Twenty-four patients were analyzed by CT and panoramic and posterior anterior (PA) radiographs; additionally, 90 dry skulls and 21 dissected anatomical specimens were examined. Three-dimensional-CT revealed that the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus resembled a tunnel format in

BACKGROUND: JCOG1212 is a multi-institutional prospective single-arm trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of superselective intra-arterial cisplatin infusion with concomitant radiotherapy (RADPLAT) for locally advanced maxillary sinus squamous-cell carcinoma (MS-SCC). We previously reported the results for the T4aN0M0 cohort (n = 64), in which RADPLAT was shown to be feasible and to provide favorable survival outcomes. This report presents the results for the T4bN0M0 cohort.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with previously untreated T4bN0M0 MS-SCC received weekly intra-arterial cisplatin (1

BACKGROUND: The main feeding artery of an anterior condylar arteriovenous fistula (AC-AVF) is the ascending pharyngeal artery and rarely the internal maxillary artery.
OBSERVATIONS: A 58-year-old male with a history of sinusitis since adolescence presented with a 5-year history of bilateral pulsatile tinnitus and a 2-month history of right ocular symptoms. Angiography showed that the peripheral branches of the bilateral internal maxillary arteries were the main feeding arteries of the AC-AVF and that they gathered in the clivus with a relatively large shunted pouch in the left jugular tubercl

The lateral wall of the maxillary sinus is supplied by the posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA). It may be affected by trauma, pathology, or surgery performed to access or correct any fracture involving the maxillary sinus. This study analysed the prevalence and distance of the PSAA from the floor of the maxillary sinus in selected Southeast Asian patients. Methods: This is a cross sectional study conducted using cone-beam computed tomographic images of 83 dentate patients with a mean age of 38.3 years. Results: One hundred sixty-six maxillary sinuses of 54 males and 29 females were evalu

A patient presented with transoral hemorrhage 3 months after CT-guided percutaneous biopsy of the masticator space, prompting concern about sentinel hemorrhage from impending carotid artery rupture related to prior radical head and neck surgery and radiation therapy. Angiographic evaluation showed the internal carotid artery to be normal but demonstrated a pseudoaneurysm of the buccal branch of the internal maxillary artery exactly corresponding to the site of prior fine-needle biopsy.

The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the efficacy of intra-arterial chemoradiotherapy (CRT) with cisplatin infusion via the superficial temporal artery (STA) for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the maxillary gingiva. Thirty-four patients with T3 and T4 maxillary gingiva SCC who received CRT between 2010 and 2021 were enrolled in this study. Cisplatin 30 mg/m2 or 40 mg/m2 was administered weekly via a retrograde catheter inserted into the STA. Radiotherapy was performed at 60 Gy/30 fractions (2010-2012) or 70 Gy/35 fractions (2013-2021). Sodium thiosulfate was administered intra

The posterior maxilla is particularly susceptible to bone resorption and poses significant anatomical challenges for surgical interventions, including sinus augmentation and dental implant placement. The Posterior Superior Alveolar Artery (PSAA), which usually courses along the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus, is essential for supplying blood to this area. Nonetheless, variations in the PSAA's position and diameter can increase the risk of complications during and after surgery. We here report the case of a 36-year-old male patient presented for implant treatment in the posterior maxilla.

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the maxilla is relatively uncommon. To the authors' knowledge, no previous reports have described reconstruction of malar and maxillary ORN using a thoracodorsal artery perforator flap combined with scapular bone. This flap has been used in oncologic resection, craniofacial dysplasia, and trauma, and it is also suitable for ORN reconstruction. The authors report a case involving a 60-year-old woman who developed malar and maxillary ORN 3 years after chemoradiotherapy for maxillary sinus carcinoma. The defect was reconstructed using this chimeric free flap, with addi

BACKGROUND: The use of the maxillary artery (MA) as a donor has increasingly become an alternative method for cerebral revascularization. Localization difficulties emerge due to rich infratemporal anatomical variations and the complicated relationships of the MA with neuromuscular structures. We propose an alternative localization method via the interforaminal route along the middle fossa floor.
METHODS: Five silicone-injected adult cadaver heads (10 sides) were dissected. Safe and effective localization of the MA was evaluated.
RESULTS: The MA displayed anatomical variations in relation to

BACKGROUND: The internal maxillary artery (IMA) is a reliable donor for extracranial-intracranial high-flow bypasses. However, previously described landmarks and techniques to harvest the IMA are complex and confusing and require extensive bone drilling, carrying significant neurovascular risk. The objective of our study was to describe a minimally invasive technique for exposing the IMA and to assess the feasibility of using the IMA as a donor for anterior-circulation recipient vessels using 2 different local interposition vessels.
METHODS: Via a minimally invasive technique, the IMA was har

Background/Objectives: A pseudoaneurysm forms as a result of disruption of all artery wall layers. In the head and neck, they are most commonly found in the maxillary artery. Due to their location and associated symptoms, detailed radiological imaging is necessary to determine the nature and extent of lesions. Various treatment methods are available. Methods: To systematize symptoms, diagnostics, and treatment methods, a literature review from databases spanning 2014 to 2024 was conducted, with 30 articles included in the study. Results: The factors that caused MAPs included facial trauma (n =

We present a rare case of subdural empyema with cerebral arteritis and brain ischemia in the middle cerebral artery distribution secondary to odontogenic maxillary sinusitis. A 32-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of high fever and generalized convulsions. Computed tomography(CT)and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)showed subdural empyema at the left convexity, with a small amount of air. An interruption of the right maxillary sinus floor corresponding to the alveolar process was evident on coronal CT. He was diagnosed as having subdural empyema caused by odontogenic maxillary si

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a group of rare but life threatening angioinvasive infections caused by fungi of the order Mucorales that often occurs in immunocompromised patients and individuals with poorly controlled diabetes. Rhinocerebral mucormycosis can mimic sinusitis but can rapidly progress to deeper disease and cause facial necrosis. Facial vascular thrombosis is a rare complication of mucormycosis and can confound diagnosis of the disease.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 25-year-old female with poorly controlled type 1 diabetes mellitus who initially presented with symptoms
