Local anaesthesia techniques are now essential parts of the multimodal analgesic approach applied in the care of small animals. The sensory innervation of the nose is provided by the maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve, so nasal pain can be prevented or alleviated by blocking branches of this nerve. Maxillary or infraorbital nerve block can be used if invasive procedures are performed on the nose of the canine and feline patients. Clear anatomical landmarks facilitate the placements of these blocks, which impose relatively low risk to the patients. These blocks do not require any advanc

In normal subjects olfactory evoked cortical potentials are seen with latencies of 150 m/sec and 350 m/sec. To evaluate the site of potential generators in central nervous pathways olfactory evoked cortical potentials were registered in patients with well-defined lesions of the central nervous system and the maxillary nerve. Absence of the first potential was seen in lesions of the brain-stem and the maxillary nerve. Absence of the second potential was observed in lesions of the frontal cerebral medulla and the temporal cortex. No olfactory potentials were found in circumscribed lesions of the

Facial blanching as a complication of local anesthesia is reported in dentistry. Inadvertent arterial penetration and subsequent vasospasm has been accepted as the mechanism of this phenomenon. Most cases occur after inferior alveolar nerve block injection. In this article, five cases are reported after Gow-Gates injection, maxillary nerve block via greater palatine foramen, inferior alveolar nerve block, and maxillary buccal infiltration. It is the largest case series in this topic. Also, clinico-anatomical correlation between facial-mucosal blanching and the site of intra-arterial injection

It is rare that cavernous sinus complications are caused by maxillary sinus lesions because the locations of these lesions are some distant from each other. The authors describe an unusual presentation that the primary lesion was located in the maxillary sinus and triggered cavernous sinus syndrome and optic nerve symptoms. The most likely possibility was that the infection traveled retrograde along the vascular plexus. Removal of maxillary sinus lesions and establishment ventilation may achieve source control.

Nerve injury to the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve has been shown to cause satellite cell reactions that extend beyond the mandibular division of the trigeminal ganglion into the maxillary and ophthalmic divisions. The goal of this study was to determine whether any physiological abnormalities correlated with this dispersal of satellite cell reaction. We investigated the electrophysiological and satellite cell glial fibrillary acidic protein immunoreactivity (GFAP-IR) changes that occur within the trigeminal ganglion 3, 10 and 59 days after a crush injury of the inferior alveolar

A case of occipital infarction following herpes zoster involving the maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve is presented. Herpes zoster ophthalmicus is followed occasionally by an angiitis and cerebral infarction, usually manifest as a hemiplegia. Cerebral angiitis has not been reported previously following herpes zoster involving the maxillary or mandibular divisions. Patients with herpes zoster involving any trigeminal division may be at risk for delayed stroke. The distribution of rash and angiitis in this case supports the hypothesis that the virus extends directly to the large vessels

The paper presents the data on variant and individual anatomy of the maxillary sinus in 400 men and women of the I and II periods of adulthood obtained using by computer tomography with 3D function. It was found that in the I period of adulthood, 12.5% of individuals had the bony septa in the alveolar recess of the maxillary sinus which were oriented frontally--Underwood's septa. Individuals of the II period of adulthood had this septa in 20% of cases. Also in the second age group, 7.2% of the cases demonstrated the septa which are oriented sagittally. These structures were often associated wi

BACKGROUND: There is no available data on the occurrence rate of a converged alveolar canal, the detailed three-dimensional (3D) courses of alveolar canals/grooves (ACGs), or the contribution of each superior alveolar nerve to each area in the maxilla. This study aimed to clarify the 3D courses of ACGs, the relationship between ACGs and superior alveolar nerves, and the contribution of posterior superior alveolar nerves (PSANs) using computed tomography (CT) with histological analysis.
METHODS: During the gross anatomy course at Niigata University, we investigated nine human cadavers.

The aim of the article is to elucidate the communications between the trigeminal nerve and facial nerve in the face. In a PubMed search, 328 studies were found using the terms 'trigeminal nerve, facial nerve, and communication.' The abstracts were read and 39 full-text articles were reviewed. Among them, 11 articles were analyzed. In the studies using dissection, the maxillary branch (V2) had the highest frequency (95.0% ± 8.0%) of communication with the facial nerve, followed by the mandibular branch (V3) (76.7% ± 38.5%). The ophthalmic branch (V1) had the lowest frequency of communication (3

A 33-year-old female patient developed an ipsilateral sixth nerve palsy and partial third nerve palsy following a Le Fort 1 osteotomy. Complete resolution occurred at 10 weeks. The likely mechanism of injury secondary to pterygo-maxillary dysjunction is highlighted, with description of the relevant anatomy. Previous cases of ocular motility complications following Le Fort 1 osteotomy are discussed. We recommend that significant care be taken in osteotome placement in the pterygo-maxillary fissure, particularly in those prone to unpredicted fractures such as older patients, or where the anatomy

OBJECTIVES: To present a series of normative measurements for the width of the frontal and infraorbital nerve branches of V1 and V2, respectively.
METHODS: Cadaveric dissection study of 15 embalmed cadaver heads (30 orbits). The frontal nerve was excised en bloc from the superior orbital rim to the superior orbital fissure. Similarly, the infraorbital nerve was excised en bloc from the inferior orbital rim to the orbital apex. Measurements were recorded of the maximal width of the frontal nerve, infraorbital nerve within the orbital floor, and pterygopalatine segment of the maxillary nerve. A

The effects of electrical stimulation of the cervical sympathetic nerves and tyramine on cerebral blood flow (CBF) were investigated in 13 unanesthetized goats in which electromagnetic flow probes had been previously implanted on the internal maxillary artery. Nerve stimulation (1.5-12 cycles/s) produced frequency-dependent reductions in CBF, a decrease of 50 percent occurring with the highest frequency. Injections of tyramine (50-500 mug) into the internal maxillary artery produced dose-dependent reductions in CBF, a decrease of 36 percent occurring with the highest dose. Both reserpine and p

Rhinogenic headache (RH), arising from nasal and sinus pathologies, present a diagnostic challenge due to their diverse etiologies. This study investigates a unique case where RH coincides with infraorbital nerve dehiscence, delving into the intricate relationship between sinonasal anatomy and neurovascular complications. The infraorbital nerve contacted a cyst in the maxillary sinus. Centripetal endoscopic sinus surgery was performed to open the maxillary sinus and remove the cyst. After 3 months of follow-up, the patient had a notable improvement in symptoms with a reduced headache. This cas

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: Ignoring anatomic variations may lead to iatrogenic injuries by surgeons.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the course of infraorbital canal and maxillary sinus using cone beam computed tomography scans (CBCT).
MATERIALS AND METHOD: One hundred and ninety two CBCT scans were reviewed for 384 infraorbital canals. The anatomic variants of infraorbital canals were classified into three types based on the protrusion degree of the infraorbital nerve from the maxillary roof into the sinus. Measurements were made on infraorbital canal a

PURPOSE: The pterygomeningeal (accessory meningeal) artery arises from the middle meningeal or maxillary artery. Although there is the potential that this artery may be wounded by the surgery for the temporomandibular joint disorder, the current state of anatomical knowledge is insufficient. This study investigated the appearance and the branching pattern of this artery as a means to its characterization.
METHODS: The pterygomeningeal artery was dissected in 14 cadavers and its branches and their distributions to the muscles inside the mandible were examined.
RESULTS: The maxillary artery pa

Gangliosides were extracted, separated by thin layer chromatography, and quantitated in three cranial nerves of the garfish (Lepisosteus osseus): the completely unmyelinated olfactory nerve (OLF), and two nerves composed of both myelinated and unmyelinated fibers, viz., the main trunk of the maxillary nerve (MAX) and a branch of the maxillary nerve (BR-MAX). Morphological studies on each of these nerves were done to verify that the OLF had been excised free of any contamination from the accompanying myelinated BR-MAX, to aid in the interpretation of the biochemical findings, and to clarify the

AIM: Oligodontia (OD) is a rare developmental condition characterized by the absence of six or more teeth. Dental implant placement may be challenging due to anatomical factors. This study aims to evaluate the alveolar bone dimensions in OD patients compared with controls.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: On maxillary and mandibular cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), bone height and width were measured at every tooth and edentulous site. The distance to the inferior alveolar nerve was also measured. Fifty-three OD patients (40 maxillary and 32 mandibular CBCT) and 82 controls (51 maxillary and 31 ma

Forty-six transantral maxillary artery ligation cases were compared with 30 controls with regard to the outcome of their treatment of epistaxis. The success rate and the complication rate were higher in the ligated patients. Maxillary artery ligation for severe idiopathic epistaxis is a valid procedure only if injury to the infraorbital nerve is avoided.
