Maxillary sinus lipoma: an unanticipated diagnosis.

Subcutaneous tissue gives rise to numerous lesions such as lipoma, the most common benign soft tissue tumors. Lipoma is seen only extremely rarely in osseous units. In addition, craniofacial involvement of intraosseous lipoma may be misdiagnosed as a fibroosseous tumour such as fibrous dysplasia. Here, we present a case of an intraosseous lipoma obviously destroying and invading the maxillary bone.

Facial asymmetry in maxillary sinus hypoplasia.

Maxillary sinus hypoplasia is a rare finding for pediatric patients. We describe two children with maxillary sinus hypoplasia associated with facial asymmetry. One patient underwent endoscopic maxillary antrostomy. For the other, treatment was deferred at the patient's request. The management options of facial asymmetry for patients with maxillary sinus hypoplasia are discussed.

Infraorbital hypesthesia after maxillary sinus barotrauma.

We report a case of a diver who suffered an episode of maxillary sinus barotrauma that presented with decreased sensation over the cutaneous distribution of the infraorbital nerve after an ascent which produced facial pain and crepitus. This case illustrates a potential confusion between a decompression sickness etiology and a barotraumatic etiology for the observed sensory deficit. The clinical features of this case were most consistent with a barotraumatic etiology for the findings noted. The anatomy of the trigeminal nerve and previous reports of cranial nerve deficits following barotrauma

Acinic cell carcinoma of maxillary sinus.

Acinic cell carcinoma is a tumor that occurs most commonly in the parotid glands. We have experienced a rare case of acinic cell carcinoma of the left maxillary sinus. The patient was a 71-year-old female. She noticed her left nasal congestion and epiphora from left eye in April 1994. She had a history of left maxillary sinus surgery in February, 1972. Antrotomy was performed and histopathological examination of specimen from the maxillary sinus proved acinic cell carcinoma. The tumor was considered to be the recurrence 22 years after initial surgery, because it coincided with the surgical spe

Ophthalmic manifestations of maxillary sinus mucoceles.

Mucoceles involving any of the paranasal sinuses may present with ophthalmic disturbances. Maxillary antral mucoceles can encroach on the inferior orbit with ocular displacement and compression, proptosis or enophthalmos, lower lid distortion, tethering of extraocular muscles, and ptosis. Periocular pain, erosion of the inferior orbital rim, infraorbital nerve compression, epiphora, and inner canthal swellings are other important presentations. Postoperative mucoceles may involve only a portion of the antrum. Five illustrative cases are presented.

Delayed removal of maxillary third molar displaced into the maxillary sinus.

INTRODUCTION: The present article reports the late removal of a wisdom tooth displaced into the maxillary sinus associated with the curettage of the adjacent infection tissue, under general anesthesia. CASE DESCRIPTION: A male patient, 42 years-old, was forwarded to remove a right wisdom tooth which was displaced into the right maxillary sinus for 10 months. The patient reported that the tooth was tried to be removed using odontosection in two moments without any success. Since then, the patient has been having (applicants) episodes of sinusitis. It had been planned to remove the tooth and th

Anatomic variation in the pterygopalatine angle of the maxillary sinus and the maxillary bulla.

Bulges of the most posterior ethmoid air cells into the maxillary sinus were termed maxillary bullæ by Onodi. With few exceptions, they have since been ignored by anatomists through time. Likewise, Sieur cells-the spheno-ethmoido-maxillary air cells-are uncommonly found in anatomical texts. We therefore aimed to perform a retrospective cone beam computed tomography study on 50 patients to document the possibilities of anatomic variation in the situs of the orbital process of palatine bone-a variation related anatomically with the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) and the respective angle of the maxi

Space closure in the maxillary posterior area through the maxillary sinus.

A common dilemma in adult orthodontic treatment is deciding how best to treat missing posterior teeth. One treatment option is to orthodontically close the space. But closure can be difficult, especially if the open space is in the maxillary posterior area, because tooth movement through the maxillary sinus is limited. The increased difficulty of moving teeth in the maxillary sinus is similar to moving a tooth in the atrophic posterior mandibular ridge. If space closure is selected as a treatment method, proper mechanics and light forces should be applied. In this article, we report movement o

Radiographic changes in the maxillary sinus following closed sinus augmentation.

BACKGROUND: The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of 3-dimensional (3D) imaging in detecting radiographic and morphological graft changes compared to traditional 2-dimensional (2D) imaging. Additionally, the study aims to assess the distribution of graft material and the extent of resorption occurring between baseline and 6 months post-implant placement following transcrestal sinus augmentation. METHODS: This study employed a transcrestal approach utilizing an osseodensification protocol for sinus augmentation with mineralized freeze-dried bone allograft. Immediately

Acquired maxillary sinus hypoplasia: a consequence of endoscopic sinus surgery?

The effects of functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) on sinus and midfacial development remain unclear. The authors report five children who, at a median age of 30 months, underwent FESS for refractory sinusitis. Three of the children had cystic fibrosis, and two had asthma. Preoperative computed tomographic (CT) scanning showed symmetric maxillary sinus development with varying degrees of mucosal disease. At a mean of 42 months after surgery, CT scans were obtained to evaluate recurrent symptoms in the five children. The scans showed unilateral maxillary hypoplasia in four children and b

The Sinus Membrane-Maxillary Lateral Wall Complex: Histologic Description and Clinical Implications for Maxillary Sinus Floor Elevation.

Maxillary sinus floor elevation has been documented as a safe and predictable procedure for gaining vertical bone height in the atrophic posterior maxillae. Conversely, there is a lack of basic research on the characteristics of the union between the sinus membrane (SM) and the bone. Clinical implications of an impaired union in healthy or pathologic membranes remain unknown. The objective of this study was to present a comprehensive histologic and morphologic description of the sinus membrane-lateral bone wall complex. In 14 fresh cadaver heads, 28 lateral wall sinus augmentation procedures w

A guide to recognizing maxillary sinus pathology and for deciding on further preoperative assessment prior to maxillary sinus augmentation.

Dentists contemplating sinus augmentation frequently take a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan as part of the work-up. Maxillary sinus pathology is common, and such dentists will be faced with pathologic sinus findings. Not all sinus pathology needs to be treated. The purpose of this article is twofold: to describe the most common sinus findings as seen on a CBCT scan and a way to recognize them, as well as to provide an algorithm for decision making on when further evaluation of the sinus is necessary.

[Analysis of correlation between maxillary molars and maxillary sinus mucosal thickening].

PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of maxillary molars on the thickening of maxillary sinus mucosa by cone-beam CT (CBCT). METHODS: A total of 72 patients with periodontitis were included in the study and 137 cases of maxillary sinus were evaluated using CBCT for the following parameters: location, tooth, maximal mucosal thickness, alveolar bone loss, vertical intrabony pockets and minimal residual bone height. The maxillary sinus mucosal thickness ≥2 mm was defined as mucosal thickening. The parameters that could influence the dimensions of the maxillary sinus membrane were assessed. The

Beyond the Maxillary Sinus: A Proposed Classification of Chronic Sinus Atelectasis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic maxillary atelectasis (CMA) describes the loss of maxillary sinus volume and has been well-described in the literature under many different names, creating inconsistency in reporting. A recent proposal has standardized the nomenclature but does not include disease of other paranasal sinuses. OBJECTIVE: We describe a unique case of chronic ethmoid atelectasis, briefly review literature associated with CMA, and propose an expanded classification of chronic sinus atelectasis. RESULTS: A 70-year-old man presented to the emergency department with transient vision loss and was
