[A case report of the first and second branchial arch syndrome with torticollis].

A 54-month-old female patient presented to the department of ophthalmology with abnormal head posture and facial asymmetry for two years. The patient's facial development was asymmetrical, with the middle 1/3 of the left side shorter than the right side. The left ear is less malformed than the right. There was no obvious abnormality in corneal light reflex and eye movement. Head tilt test ( -). So, paralysis of the superior oblique muscle was excluded. In consultation with the department of maxillofacial surgery, the patient was confirmed as the first and second branchial arch syndrome and tor

[The classification of defects in the dental arches of children and orthodontic treatment methods].

Dentition defects occurring in children are classified into 6 classes with subclasses in some of them. Class I includes dentition with defects in the frontal part, class II includes dentitions with distal defects. Both classes include special subclasses for dentition with defects of deciduous teeth, of permanent teeth with underdeveloped roots, and of permanent teeth with mature roots. Non-distal dentition defects (class III) are divided into two subclasses: unilateral and bilateral. Class IV includes dentition with multiple defects in various age groups. Dentition defects combined with maxill

Visual loss from arterial steal in patients with maxillofacial arteriovenous malformation.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether an arterial "steal" from the ophthalmic artery accounts for the ocular manifestations associated with maxillofacial arteriovenous malformation (AVM) outside the orbit. DESIGN: Retrospective noncomparative case series. PARTICIPANTS: Seven patients with maxillofacial AVM who had been previously treated, unsuccessfully, with proximal ligation of the supplying external carotid artery branches were evaluated clinically and by superselective cerebral angiography. No cases had intraorbital arteriovenous shunting or abnormal venous drainage to the orbit. INTERVENTION

Long-term maxillary anteroposterior changes following maxillary protraction with or without expansion: A meta-analysis and meta-regression.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary protraction with or without expansion is a widely known orthopedic treatment modality in growing skeletal Class III patients. However, limited data are available regarding the outcomes of long-term changes in the maxilla. Aim of this meta-analysis was to assess the effectiveness of the long-term maxillary anteroposterior changes following a facemask therapy with or without rapid maxillary expansion in growing skeletal Class III patients. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using the databases of PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, and Embase. Ran

Surgical management of Binder's syndrome: lessons learned.

Maxillonasal dysplasia, commonly known as Binder's syndrome, is unmistakably characterized by midfacial hypoplasia and a retruded flat nose. The condition is variably expressed, and reconstruction must be tailored to the individual. Controversy still exists over the optimal age for surgery and the ideal treatment strategy. In a review of 24 patients with Binder's syndrome treated at the Chang Gung Craniofacial Centre over a period of 17 years, the authors examine the evolution of their experience treating patients with this condition. Maxillary osteotomies were rarely required and were reserve

Binder phenotype: clinical and etiological heterogeneity of the so-called Binder maxillonasal dysplasia in prenatally diagnosed cases, and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal Binder profile is a well known clinical phenotype, defined by a flat profile without nasal eminence, contrasting with nasal bones of normal length. Binder profile results of a hypoplasia of the nasal pyramid (sometimes referred to as maxillonasal dysplasia). We report 8 fetuses prenatally diagnosed as Binder phenotype, and discuss their postnatal diagnoses. METHODS: Ultrasonographic detailed measurements in 2D and 3D were done on the 8 fetuses with Binder profile, and were compared with postnatal phenotype. RESULTS: All fetuses have an association of verticalized nasal bo

[Van Buchem disease. Maxillofacial changes, diagnostic classification and general principles of treatment].

Van Buchem's disease is a rare pathology with recessive transmission and variable expressivity characterised by a progressive cortical bone deposition. There are two types of this disease: Type I (Van Buchem's disease) progressive form for all life and with high level of PA (alkaline phosphate); Type II (Worth disease) the pathologic bone deposition stops at 20 years of age and the level of PA in the adult is normal. The most important histological feature is the bone hypertrophy with preservation of the lamellar frame. The bones interested are: skull vault, mandible, ribs, clavicle and diaphy

Brachytelephalangic chondrodysplasia punctata: prenatal diagnosis and postnatal outcome.

We report the prenatal management of a brachytelephalangic chondrodysplasia punctata (CDPX1) case and how postnatal findings confirmed the diagnosis. The mother was initially referred after ultrasound revealed an abnormal fetal mid-face and punctuation of upper femoral epiphyses. Chondrodysplasia punctata (CP) with Binder anomaly was suspected. 3D-HCT revealed brachytelephalangy suggesting CDPX1. At birth, mid-face hypoplasia was marked. Postnatal imaging and genetic analysis confirmed the initial diagnosis. Binder anomaly is probably always associated with CP. The newly revised CP classificat

Diamond-Blackfan anemia and nutritional deficiency-induced anemia in children.

Diamond-Blackfan anemia is a rare, inherited disease that characteristically presents as a chronic, normochromic macrocytosis due to red cell lineage bone marrow failure. Although studies are elaborating on the genetic basis for its associated comorbidities, little has been published comparing this anemia to other chronic anemias that have similar laboratory results in children. This article offers a global perspective of the disease and compares it with anemia due to vitamin B12 and folate deficiency in children.

Oral and maxillofacial manifestations of Gardner's syndrome associated with growth hormone deficiency: case report and literature review.

Gardner's syndrome (GS) is a hereditary disorder inherited as autosomal dominant with complete penetrance and variable expression. GS is a variant of familial adenomatous polyposis characterized by extracolonic manifestations including osteomas, dental anomalies, and epidermoid cysts. The association between GS and endocrine abnormalities has been well documented but a direct pituitary involvement has never been reported. We present a case of oral and maxillofacial manifestations in an adult patient affected by GS associated with growth hormone deficiency, a hitherto unreported association. Th

[Transtracheal jet pulmonary ventilation as a measure for preventing hypoxia during reconstructive maxillofacial operations].

Anesthesia including high- or low-frequency transtracheal jet ventilation of the lungs was used in 52 patients with maxillofacial abnormalities subjected to repair surgery. The number of respiratory cycles was 20 per min in 1 group and 120 per min in the other. Intubation of the trachea was started 20 min after ventilation was started. Transtracheal jet ventilation of the lungs prevented hypoxia during intubation of the trachea in such patients. High-frequency jet ventilation of the lungs may be a method of choice in such cases.

A new type of maxillofacial dysostosis, inherited as an X-linked or autosomal recessive trait.

Two brothers with congenital conductive hearing loss and phenotypic characteristics of maxillofacial dysostosis are described. In the oldest boy a malformed ossicular chain was present and the conductive hearing loss was improved by a malleo-vestibulo-pexy, with post-operative hearing gain of approximately 30 dB. Although superficially similar to Treacher Collins syndrome, the facial characteristics are more typical of maxillofacial than of mandibulofacial dysostosis. These cases most likely represent a new type of maxillofacial dysostosis inherited as an X-linked or autosomal recessive trait.

Fraser Syndrome From Prenatal Diagnosis to Multidisciplinary Management and Long-Term Care: A Narrative Review.

Fraser syndrome (FS) is a rare autosomal recessive congenital malformation disorder characterised by cryptophthalmos, syndactyly, and variable respiratory, renal, genitourinary, craniofacial, and other systemic abnormalities. Considerable phenotypic heterogeneity creates challenges in prenatal recognition, prognostic counselling, neonatal management, and long-term care. Prenatal diagnosis may be particularly difficult because characteristic external abnormalities are not always detectable on ultrasonography, while oligohydramnios secondary to renal abnormalities may further limit fetal visuali

Detection and diagnosis of cleidocranial dysplasia by panoramic radiography: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a rare and underdiagnosed congenital disorder in dentistry. The purpose of this study was to illustrate and quantify the maxillofacial bone abnormalities detected on panoramic radiographs from a relatively large retrospective case series and to provide a series of diagnostic references for dentists to indicate the presence of disease and help in making an early and accurate diagnosis. METHODS: The dental panoramic radiographs of thirty CCD patients aged 11 to 45 years (18 males and 12 females) were examined retrospectively. The dentition states, in

Comprehensive overview of biomaterials for bone regeneration in cleft lip and palate.

Cleft lip and palate (CL/P) is the most common congenital malformation within the oral and maxillofacial region of human beings, involving abnormal development of lips, palate, and alveolar bone. Bone grafting is a crucial yet challenging part of the treatment for CL/P. Although autologous iliac bone transplantation is the clinical gold standard, additional surgical trauma, donor site complications, bone resorption, and risk of secondary surgical grafting undermine its clinical efficacy. Recently, synthetic bones have attracted increasing attention for bone regeneration, such as calcium phosph

Prenatal ultrasound diagnosis of fetal maxillofacial teratoma: Two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Facial teratoma is a rare benign tumor that accounts for about 1.6% of all teratomas and can be diagnosed by prenatal ultrasound (US). The purpose of this report was to describe our experience with the diagnosis of fetal facial teratoma by prenatal US at second trimester to provide a reference for clinical diagnosis of fetal maxillofacial teratoma. CASE SUMMARY: We present two cases of patients with abnormal fetal facial findings on US at second trimester of pregnancy in our department. Case 1 was a 31-year-old G3 P1 + 1 female, with US revealing a heterogeneous echogenicity of 32

Orofacial development in children with Down's syndrome 12 years after early intervention with a stimulating plate.

BACKGROUND: Orofacial regulation therapy for children with Down's syndrome was introduced to Europe in Munich in 1978. Since then, many clinical studies have provided scientific evidence that this therapeutic approach enhances the orofacial function and facial appearance of children with trisomy 21. Only few long-term results have been published to date. PATIENTS AND RESULTS: In the present study, 20 children with trisomy 21 were examined more than 12 years after starting treatment in infancy with a Castillo Morales stimulating plate. The follow-up examination showed that the improved orofaci

The relationship between maxillofacial morphology and biomechanical environment in the TMJ during central clenching: A measurement and finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between maxillofacial morphology and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is unclear. The stress distribution in temporomandibular joints (TMJs) was a key feature in understanding the pathogenesis of TMD. METHODS: Twenty-three subjects were scanned using MRI and CT in this study. The parameters of the subjects were measured. Finite element (FE) analyses were also conducted to evaluate the stress distribution in the TMJs. Paired correlations were then performed between the cephalometric parameters and FE results for the TMJs. RESULTS: The results showed the anterior
