BACKGROUND: Every year, there are significant numbers of motorcycle accident casualties in Taiwan. These accidents are the leading cause of maxillofacial trauma. Age should be an important factor of maxillofacial fracture patterns yet there is limited literature on the topic. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the correlation of age with maxillofacial fracture in motorcycle accidents.
METHODS: This is a retrospective descriptive analysis conducted over 2-year period at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. We focused on the population of maxillofacial injury caused by motorcycle accidents.

Clinicians face numerous challenges when managing psychiatric patients who self-inflict injuries within the maxillofacial region. In addition to a complex clinical examination, there are both surgical and psychiatric factors to consider, such as the risk of damaging vital structures, the exacerbation of the patient's psychiatric status, and the long-term psychosocial and esthetic sequelae. We present 2 cases of adolescents who repeatedly self-inflicted wounds and/or inserted foreign bodies (FBs) into the face, scalp, and neck. The different treatment modalities were based on full evaluation of

The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence of occupational maxillofacial injuries using a newly installed relational database. Twenty-six injuries were identified out of 28,624 patients admitted to the emergency unit during a 12 month period. Falls from height or being struck by moving objects were common causes of these injuries. Two-thirds of those identified were construction workers. This paper demonstrates the power of modern databases to identify specific occurrences that may provide the basis for prevention in the future.

PURPOSE: To determine whether physicians can accurately assess maxillofacial injury patients for the presence of fractures using a standardized clinical examination protocol, and to evaluate differences in assessment accuracy across experience levels.
METHOD: A prospective observational cohort study was conducted in four hospital emergency departments of patients with maxillofacial injuries. Physicians rated fracture probability twice on a 0-10 scale: first based on visual signs before the clinical examination, and again after the standardized clinical examination consisting of 15 midfacial o

Trauma is a leading cause of death worldwide, with 25% of cases involving the head and neck region. Among various trauma types, impalement injuries caused by arrows and spearguns pose significant challenges due to their potential for severe damage to critical structures. This case report aims to present a case of a speargun arrow injury to the face and to discuss the mechanisms, implications, and management of such trauma. A 44-year-old male presented with an impaled arrow in the right infraorbital area, accidentally shot by his son. Initial assessment showed a conscious patient with stable vi

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence and etiology of maxillofacial trauma (MFT) and its association with traumatic brain injury (TBI).
BACKGROUND: Anecdotal evidence suggests that there is an association between MFT and TBI and that higher incidences of TBI are associated with frontal bone and mid-facial fractures. Despite the large volume of maxillofacial facial fractures treated in the authors' unit, no study has been undertaken to establish the relationship between TBI and maxillofacial fractures.
METHODS: This was a retrospective single-center cross-sectional study that was conducted

BACKGROUND: Cranial and oral-maxillofacial injuries accounted for 33% of military visits to in-theater (Level III) military treatment facilities for battle injuries during Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). Even after years of conflict, the size and scope of oral-maxillofacial injuries in military armed conflict is still not fully understood. This study reports U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) rates of oral-maxillofacial injuries that can be used for further surveillance and research.
METHODS: The populations studied were military personnel deployed to Afghani

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence and patterns of cervical spine injury (CSI) associated with maxillofacial fractures at a UK trauma centre.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted of 714 maxillofacial fracture patients presenting to a single trauma centre between 2006 and 2012.
RESULTS: Of the 714 maxillofacial fracture patients, 2.2% had associated CSI including a fracture, cord contusion or disc herniation. In comparison, 1.0% of patients without maxillofacial trauma sustained a CSI (odds ratio: 2.2, p=0.01). The majority (88%) of CSI cases of were

Maxillofacial trauma is often associated with injuries to the cranium, especially in high-energy trauma. The management of such cases can be challenging and requires close cooperation between oral and maxillofacial surgery and neurosurgical teams. There are few reports in the current literature describing the complications that develop in patients with maxillofacial trauma and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Complications can be categorized as early or late and/or minor and major. The exact definition of complications and their categorization remains a matter of current debate. We present a 10 y

In the literature it is questioned if the presence of maxillofacial trauma is associated with the presence of brain injury. The aim of this study is to present a 10-year retrospective study of the incidence and aetiology of maxillofacial trauma associated with brain injury that required both oral and maxillofacial and neurosurgical intervention during the same hospital stay. Forty-seven patients from a population of 579 trauma patients undergoing maxillofacial surgery were identified. The main cause of injury was road traffic collision, followed by falls. Interpersonal violence correlated less

An experimental model was designed to define alterations in the normal mandibular growth process under the influence of postburn neck contractures. Additionally, this craniofacial growth model was used to compare two early treatment modalities of neck burns in their capability to minimize contracture and hence allow for normal mandibular growth and development. Growth implies increase in size as well as change in shape and position. These three aspects of growth were defined accordingly to Björk as rotations. The intramatrix rotation expresses the change in mandibular shape, and the matrix rot

Tear gases are used by police or armed forces for control of riots or social events or by the general population for private self-defense. These agents are used widely throughout the world, but some harmful effects have reported. In addition, despite well-defined chemical side effects documented in the literature, data are insufficient regarding mechanical injury due to tear gas capsules. We report three cases of severe maxillofacial injury in patients who had these capsules fired from tear gas guns directly to their faces. The capsules penetrated the patients' faces, causing potentially fatal

One hundred cases of facial mass fractures observed in the period April-September 1988 have been assessed using a clinico-anamnestic type investigation. Among trauma patients there is a prevalence of male patients aged between 10 and 30. Fractures located at the middle third and mandible occur in a practically equivalent number. Most traumas are the result of road accidents, following by falls. A good degree of correlation was observed between trauma aetiology and dynamics on the one hand and type and gravity of fractures on the other. Direct fractures, with greatest comminution of fragments p
