[An outline of spreading of Western mediciine into Yantai in modern age].

At the turn of the last century, side by side with the infiltration of religious culture from Western countries, western medicine spread into Yantai. The religious force, headed by American Presbyterian Mission, carried out charitable activities in the process of preaching and laid down the foundation for western medicine rooted in Yantai by establishing schools, education and training followers. They cultivated local physicians by first setting up clinics which had later transformed into hospitals. These are their major measures for building bases for spreading Christianity by foreigners. Cleft and Craniofacial Care During Military Pediatric Plastic Surgery Humanitarian Missions.

BACKGROUND: Military pediatric plastic surgery humanitarian missions in the Western Hemisphere have been initiated and developed since the early 1990 s using the Medical Readiness Education and Training Exercise (MEDRETE) concept. Despite its initial training mission status, the MEDRETE has developed into the most common and advanced low level medical mission platform currently in use. The objective of this study is to report cleft- and craniofacial-related patient outcomes after initiation and evolution of a standardized treatment protocol highlighting lessons learned which apply to civilian

Diagnostic ultrasound at MACH 20: retroperitoneal and pelvic imaging in space.

An operationally available diagnostic imaging capability augments spaceflight medical support by facilitating the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of medical or surgical conditions, by improving medical outcomes and, thereby, by lowering medical mission impacts and the probability of crew evacuation due to medical causes. Microgravity-related physiological changes occurring during spaceflight can affect the genitourinary system and potentially cause conditions such as urinary retention or nephrolithiasis for which ultrasonography (U/S) would be a useful diagnostic tool. This study describes

[Regional medical-psychological services].

The history of psychiatric care in prisons is relatively recent, and the regional medical-psychological services - initially called regional medical-psychological centers - were established in the different regions of France from 1977 onwards. Their main missions are the prevention and treatment of mental illnesses and addictions, as well as the organization of post-prison psychiatric care. Composed of multidisciplinary teams, they offer individual or group assessments and follow-up, as well as more specific care for certain penal populations.

Analog habitat health and safety protocol: replicable standard system for analyzing data related to human factors in simulations.

As space exploration emerges as the next frontier for humanity, challenges related to health and safety in isolated, confined, and extreme (ICE) environments become increasingly relevant. This study examines the development of integrated monitoring protocols to establish a replicable standard for collecting and analyzing human factors indicators in both analogous and real space missions, adapting existing approaches from polar environments. A one-month analog mission was conducted with a six-member crew, during which protocols were designed for pre-, during-, and post-mission phases. The metho

Reducing Surgical Site Infections During Otolaryngology Surgical Missions.

OBJECTIVES: To determine what measures an otolaryngology-head and neck surgery team might adopt to decrease the incidence of surgical site infection (SSI) on a short-term surgical mission. Despite concerns about safety and efficacy, short-term surgical missions remain the predominant structure for humanitarian surgical care in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). Hospitals in high-income countries strive to improve surgical outcomes through implementation of World Health Organization (WHO) safe surgery guidelines. Reduction of SSI risk is a key part of this effort. METHODS: Literature rev

Laparoendoscopic single-site (LESS) renal cyst decortication during Pacific Partnership humanitarian assistance mission.

We describe the first laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) performed during a U.S. Navy humanitarian assistance mission. In conjunction with host nation surgeons, we performed a LESS renal cyst decortication in a 72-year-old woman during Pacific Partnership aboard the USNS Mercy (T-AH19). LESS procedures during humanitarian assistance missions offer advantages of rapid recovery and minimal convalescence. This case illustrates an innovative way to transfer technology and techniques between mission personnel and host nation providers during missions designed to build stronger relationship
