This study attempted to evaluate the validity of self-reports of memory deficits in narcoleptics by comparing the scores of these patients with the scores of matched control subjects on standardized tests of memory function. After completing a short interview designed to elicit qualitative information about memory difficulties, 30 narcoleptic subjects and 30 control subjects completed the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS), Rey-Auditory Verbal Learning Test, the Rey Complex Figure Test, Strub and Black's List of Letters, and the Symbol Digits Modalities Test (SDMT). In addition, the Profile of Mood S

Objective: Alzheimer's disease (AD) begins with subtle memory decline, years before dementia onset. The presence of subjective memory complaints (SMC) has been proposed as a marker of preclinical AD. However, recent evidence has demonstrated early and progressive loss of awareness of memory difficulties in non-demented older adults harboring AD pathology. We investigated the respective contributions of SMC and spouse-appraised memory functioning (SAM) to predict memory decline in a large cohort of community dwelling older adults. Methods: The Wisconsin Longitudinal Study collected cognitive da

Two interventions that tax visuospatial working memory (WM) may reduce intrusive memories despite differing procedurally: playing Tetris with or without memory recall. Accordingly, this study examined how engagement with negative memories influences intrusion frequency (Experiment 1) and WM load (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1 (N = 90), participants viewed a trauma film and were assigned to Tetris without memory recall, Tetris with memory recall, or a no-task control condition. Participants rated memory vividness and unpleasantness before and after the intervention and recorded film-related in

The origin of category effects in visual working memory (VWM) - whether they stem from perceptual factors - remains debated. The present study adopted an individual-differences approach to investigate how the magnitude of category effects relates to perceptual versus memory factors, as indexed by discrimination thresholds. Eighty participants completed two threshold tasks: one perceptual color discrimination task where two color patches were presented simultaneously, and one memory color discrimination task where patches were presented sequentially. They also performed a delayed estimation tas

Williams syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorder caused by microdeletion of a critical region on chromosome 7q11.23. At the cognitive level, it is usually characterized by moderate intellectual disability and deficits in visuospatial skills, while showing relative strengths in verbal skills and nonverbal reasoning. Despite their apparent good performance with verbal skills, previous studies have suggested that the structure of semantic memory may be altered in people diagnosed with WS. In this study, we explored the organization of semantic memory in WS through the Deese-Ro

Human memory is inherently susceptible to errors, including the formation of false memories-instances where individuals mistakenly recall information they were never exposed to. While prior research has largely focused on neural activity associated with false memory, the structural brain correlates of this phenomenon remain relatively unexplored. This study bridges that gap by investigating gray matter structure as it relates to individual differences in false memory performance. Using publicly available magnetic resonance imaging datasets, we analyzed cortical thickness (CT) in neural regions

According to a "Swiss Army Knife" model of the brain, cognitive functions such as episodic memory and face perception map onto distinct neural substrates. In contrast, representational accounts propose that each brain region is best explained not by which specialized function it performs, but by the type of information it represents with its neural firing. In a functional magnetic resonance imaging study, we asked whether the neural signals supporting recognition memory fall mandatorily within the medial temporal lobes (MTL), traditionally thought the seat of declarative memory, or whether the

The component of working memory that the frontal cortex subserves is frequently characterized as the executive working memory (EWM). This study applied a neuropsychological measure of EWM (NPM-EWM) in older adults with memory impairment to investigate the EWM. Thirty-two older adults from the community were recruited as older healthy controls (OHCs), and 58 older adults from a memory clinic were diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and mild dementia (MD). Significant differences were found among the three groups in the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR), the Chinese version of Mini-Menta

Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is a rare X-linked primary immunodeficiency characterized by recurrent infections, micro thrombocytopenia, eczema, and a high incidence of autoimmunity and malignancy. A defect in the T cell compartment is thought to be a major cause of immunodeficiency in patients with WAS; However, whether the antigen specific T memory cell is altered has not been extensively studied. Here, we examined the expansion/contraction kinetics of CD8+ memory T cells and their maintenance in WASp-/- mice. The results showed that WAS protein (WASp) is not required for differentiation of

OBJECTIVES: Research suggests beneficial effects of minimal interference on item memory in mild Alzheimer's disease (AD). We conducted a study to test whether these beneficial effects extend to source memory, i.e., the ability to remember the episodic context in which an information was previously acquired.
METHOD: Twenty-six mild AD participants and 28 controls manipulated six objects or watched the experimenter manipulating six other objects. After immediate item recall ("what were the items?") and source recall ("by whom the items were previously manipulated?"), an interference or a minima

Developments in the understanding of the neurological and functional architectures of phonological short-term memory that took place in the 1984-2004 time period are reviewed. Phonological short-term memory is discussed as a case that illustrates a number of issues shared by other research domains in cognitive neuropsychology, with particular reference to memory systems. Modularity: Phonological short-term memory includes two main components, an input storage system (the phonological short-term store), and an output rehearsal process. These components are functionally connected with other verb

Working memory (WM) capacity has been claimed to be larger for meaningful objects than for simple features, possibly because richer semantic representations enhance item distinctiveness. However, prior demonstrations compared trial-unique meaningful objects with a small set of repeated simple features. This design confounds meaningfulness with proactive interference (PI), such that PI is minimal for trial-unique objects but substantial for repeated features. Therefore, superior performance for meaningful objects may reflect contributions from episodic long-term memory (LTM) rather than expande

This paper reports on a study of my autobiographical memory for 2691 notes recorded over 24 years in my diary, without any intention to ever use the notes as test material. I never read any of the notes again until the start of the memory study. I remembered less than two thirds of the recorded events and the retention curve showed a curvilinear shape. I dated 2% of the described events correctly but misdated on average about one and a half year, with an equal number of over and underestimations of the event age. Retention correlated significantly with ratings of salience, emotional involvemen

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work was to test the hypothesis that patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) with subjective initial memory complaints (not confirmed by an objective standard assessment) and various phenotypes also show objective very long-term memory deficit with accelerated long-term forgetting. We tested patients with TLE with 2 surprise memory tests after 3 weeks: the standard Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT) and Epireal, a new test specifically designed to capture more ecologic aspects of autobiographical memory.
METHODS: Forty-seven patients w

The subjective sense of recollecting events from one's past is an essential feature of episodic memory, but the neural mechanisms supporting this capacity are poorly understood. We examined the role of large-scale patterns of neural synchrony using whole-head MEG recordings in healthy adults and S.M., who has severely deficient autobiographical memory (SDAM; Palombo et al., 2015), a syndrome in which autobiographical recollection is absent but other functions (including other mnemonic functions), are normal. MEG was conducted while participants listened to prospectively collected recordings do

Sleep deprivation impairs performance in emotional memory tasks, however this effect on memory is not completely understood. Possible mechanisms may involve an alteration in neurotransmission systems, as shown by the fact that many drugs that modulate neural pathways can prevent memory impairment by sleep loss. Gastrin releasing peptide (GRP) is a neuropeptide that emerged as a regulatory molecule of emotional memory through the modulation of other neurotransmission systems. Thus, the present study addressed the effect of intraperitoneal (IP) administration of bombesin (BB) (2.5, 5.0 and 10.0μ

According to Conway's self-memory system (SMS) model, autobiographical memories may be facilitated, inhibited, or misremembered to be consistent with current self. In 3 experiments, the authors tested this by hypnotically suggesting an identity delusion and indexing whether this shift in self produced a corresponding shift in autobiographical memory. High hypnotizable participants displayed a compelling identity delusion and elicited specific autobiographical events that they could justify when challenged. These memories were reinterpretations of previous experiences that supported the suggest
