Automated detection scheme for acute myocardial infarction using convolutional neural network and long short-term memory.

The early detection of acute myocardial infarction, which is caused by lifestyle-related risk factors, is essential because it can lead to chronic heart failure or sudden death. Echocardiography, among the most common methods used to detect acute myocardial infarction, is a noninvasive modality for the early diagnosis and assessment of abnormal wall motion. However, depending on disease range and severity, abnormal wall motion may be difficult to distinguish from normal myocardium. As abnormal wall motion can lead to fatal complications, high accuracy is required in its detection over time on

Dim light in the evening causes coordinated realignment of circadian rhythms, sleep, and short-term memory.

Light provides the primary signal for entraining circadian rhythms to the day/night cycle. In addition to rods and cones, the retina contains a small population of photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (pRGCs) expressing the photopigment melanopsin (OPN4). Concerns have been raised that exposure to dim artificial lighting in the evening (DLE) may perturb circadian rhythms and sleep patterns, and OPN4 is presumed to mediate these effects. Here, we examine the effects of 4-h, 20-lux DLE on circadian physiology and behavior in mice and the role of OPN4 in these responses. We show that 2 wk of DLE

Reduced risk aversion and impaired short-term memory in juvenile rats with malformation of cortical development.

Malformation of cortical developments (MCDs) is currently an incurable disease and is associated with significant neuropsychological problems, such as intellectual disability, epilepsy, and anxiety disorders from a young age. Development of a suitable animal model and pathophysiological study is therefore necessary to better understand and treat MCDs from being an incurable disease. The Y-maze, open field, and fear conditioning studies were performed at postnatal days 40-44 to validate the behavioral phenotypes of the existing rat model of MCD with prenatal methylazoxymethanol exposure at thei

Visual short-term memory relates to tau and amyloid burdens in preclinical autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, visual short-term memory (VSTM) binding tests have been shown to be one of the most sensitive behavioral indicators of Alzheimer's disease (AD), especially when they require the binding of multiple features (e.g., color and shape). Recently, it has become possible to directly measure amyloid and tau levels in vivo via positron emission tomography (PET). To this point, these behavioral and neurochemical markers have not been compared in humans with AD or at risk for it. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, we compared VSTM performance to tau and amyloid concen

Lateralized evoked responses in parietal cortex demonstrate visual short-term memory deficits in first-episode schizophrenia.

Working memory dysfunction may be central to neurocognitive deficits in schizophrenia. Maintenance of visual information in working memory, or visual short-term memory (vSTM), is linked to general cognitive dysfunction and predicts functional outcome. Lateralized change-detection tasks afford investigation of the contralateral delay activity (CDA), a useful tool for investigating vSTM dysfunction. Previous work suggests "hyperfocusing" of attention in schizophrenia, such that CDA is increased when a single item is maintained in vSTM but reduced for multiple items. If observed early in the dise

Ketamine reversed short-term memory impairment and depressive-like behavior in animal model of Parkinson's disease.

The most common features of Parkinson's disease (PD) are motor impairments, but many patients also present depression and memory impairment. Ketamine, an N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, has been shown to be effective in patients with treatment-resistant major depression. Thus, the present study evaluated the action of ketamine on memory impairment and depressive-like behavior in an animal model of PD. Male Wistar rats received a bilateral infusion of 6 μg/side 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) into the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc). Short-term memory was evaluated by the socia

Multi-target attention and visual short-term memory capacity are closely linked in the intraparietal sulcus.

The existing literature suggests a critical role for both the right intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and the right temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) in our ability to attend to multiple simultaneously-presented lateralized targets (multi-target attention), and the failure of this ability in extinction patients. Currently, however, the precise role of each of these areas in multi-target attention is unclear. In this study, we combined the theory of visual attention (TVA) with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) guided continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) in neurologically healthy subjects

Short erythropoietin-derived peptide enhances memory, improves long-term potentiation, and counteracts amyloid beta-induced pathology.

Neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) are characterized by the irreversible neuronal loss and memory impairment, and current treatments are merely symptomatic. Erythropoietin (EPO) has been shown to possess neurotrophic, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and memory-enhancing effects, which could be therapeutically beneficial in the different aspects of AD. However, the hematopoietic effect of EPO has hampered its potential as a neuroprotective and procognitive agent. In this study, we characterized a novel small peptide, NL100, derived from a conserved C-helix region o

Visual short-term memory binding deficit with age-related hearing loss in cognitively normal older adults.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) has been posited as a possible modifiable risk factor for neurocognitive impairment and dementia. Measures sensitive to early neurocognitive changes associated with ARHL would help to elucidate the mechanisms underpinning this relationship. We hypothesized that ARHL might be associated with decline in visual short-term memory binding (VSTMB), a potential biomarker for preclinical dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD). We examined differences in accuracy between older adults with hearing loss and a control group on the VSTMB task from a single feature (shapes)

Electrical Stimulation Over Human Posterior Parietal Cortex Selectively Enhances the Capacity of Visual Short-Term Memory.

Visual short-term memory (VSTM) provides an on-line mental space for incoming sensory information to be temporally maintained to carry out complex behavioral tasks. Despite its essential functions, the capacity at which VSTM could maintain sensory information is limited (i.e., VSTM can hold only about three to four visual items at once). Moreover, the quality of sensory representation (i.e., precision) degrades as more information has to be maintained in VSTM. Correlational evidence suggests that the level and the pattern of neural activity measured in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) track

Molecular diversity of clustered protocadherin-α required for sensory integration and short-term memory in mice.

Clustered protocadherins (Pcdhs) are neuronal cell adhesion molecules characterized by homophilic adhesion between the tetramers of 58 distinct isoforms in mice. The diversity of Pcdhs and resulting highly-specific neuronal adhesion may be required for the formation of neural circuits for executing higher brain functions. However, this hypothesis remains to be tested, because knockout of Pcdh genes produces abnormalities that may interfere with higher brain functions indirectly. In Pcdh-α1,12 mice, only α1, α12 and two constitutive isoforms are expressed out of 14 isoforms. The appearance and

TMS over the right precuneus reduces the bilateral field advantage in visual short term memory capacity.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have demonstrated a bilateral field advantage (BFA) in early visual attentional processing, that is, enhanced visual processing when stimuli are spread across both visual hemifields. The results are reminiscent of a hemispheric resource model of parallel visual attentional processing, suggesting more attentional resources on an early level of visual processing for bilateral displays [e.g. Sereno AB, Kosslyn SM. Discrimination within and between hemifields: a new constraint on theories of attention. Neuropsychologia 1991;29(7):659-75.]. Several studies have shown tha

Short-term environmental enrichment rescues adult neurogenesis and memory deficits in APP(Sw,Ind) transgenic mice.

Epidemiological studies indicate that intellectual activity prevents or delays the onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Similarly, cognitive stimulation using environmental enrichment (EE), which increases adult neurogenesis and functional integration of newborn neurons into neural circuits of the hippocampus, protects against memory decline in transgenic mouse models of AD, but the mechanisms involved are poorly understood. To study the therapeutic benefits of cognitive stimulation in AD we examined the effects of EE in hippocampal neurogenesis and memory in a transgenic mouse model of AD expre

Different patterns of memory impairments accompany short- and longer-term maintenance on a high-energy diet.

Intake of diets high in saturated fat and simple carbohydrates is associated with cognitive impairments in both humans and rodents. Here we report that feeding rats this type of high-energy (HE) diet has different effects on different types of learning and memory processes. Rats were first trained to solve spatial and nonspatial reference (RM) and working (WM) memory problems in a radial maze paradigm. Memory retention was assessed following six durations of free access to an HE or standard chow control diet ranging from 72-hr to 90 days. The results showed that performance on spatial RM and W

The relationship between perisylvian morphology and verbal short-term memory functioning in children with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Although children with neurodevelopmental disorders frequently present with reduced short-term memory functioning, the relationship between perisylvian morphology and verbal short-term memory functioning has received limited attention. Thus, examining this relationship in children with neurodevelopmental disorders was the focus of this exploratory study. Results suggested leftward asymmetry in the temporal bank of the planum temporale is related to better coding and storage of semantic material. In contrast, parietal bank morphology is related to coding and storage of phonological material, an

Evidence for GABA-BZ receptor modulation in short-term memory passive avoidance task paradigm in mice.

The possible involvement of gamma-aminobutyric acid/benzodiazepine (GABA-BZ) receptor modulation in scopolamine-induced short-term memory deficit was investigated in mice. Passive avoidance step-down task behavior was observed. Latency of mice to reach shock-free zone (SFZ) and number of mistakes the animal made in 15 min were used as separate parameters for acquisition and memory retention, respectively. Scopolamine (0.3 mg/kg) caused a delay in reaching SFZ and an increased number of mistakes. Physostigmine reversed the scopolamine-induced increase in number of mistakes; however, it caused a

Short-term memory errors are strongly associated with a drift in neural activity in the posterior parietal cortex.

Understanding the neural mechanisms behind short-term memory (STM) errors is crucial for unraveling cognitive processes and addressing deficits associated with neuropsychiatric disorders. This study examines whether STM errors arise from misrepresentation of sensory information or decay in these representations over time. Using 2-photon calcium imaging in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) of mice performing a delayed match-to-sample task, we identified a subset of PPC neurons exhibiting both directional and temporal selectivity. Contrary to the hypothesis that STM errors primarily stem from

Individual stress vulnerability is predicted by short-term memory and AMPA receptor subunit ratio in the hippocampus.

Increased vulnerability to aversive experiences is one of the main risk factors for stress-related psychiatric disorders as major depression. However, the molecular bases of vulnerability, on the one hand, and stress resilience, on the other hand, are still not understood. Increasing clinical and preclinical evidence suggests a central involvement of the glutamatergic system in the pathogenesis of major depression. Using a mouse paradigm, modeling increased stress vulnerability and depression-like symptoms in a genetically diverse outbred strain, and we tested the hypothesis that differences i

Anti-Ri antibodies associated with short-term memory deficits and a mature cystic teratoma of the ovary.

BACKGROUND: The IgG autoantibody ANNA-2 (anti-Ri) is a type 2 antineuronal antibody that has been found to bind to highly conserved and widely distributed adult brain proteins encoded by the Nova-1 and Nova-2 genes. Anti-Ri antibodies are typically detected in the serum and cerebrospinal fluids of patients with neurological disorders such as opsoclonus/myoclonus and cerebellar ataxia and in association with gynecologic and breast malignancies. CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes an unusual example of a 33-year-old female patient who developed short-term memory deficits over a 3-month peri

Characterization and Prediction of Short-term Outcomes in Memory After Temporal Lobe Resection in Children With Epilepsy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to characterize short-term outcomes in episodic memory, as assessed by the Children's Memory Scale (CMS), after temporal lobe resection in children with epilepsy using empirical methods for assessing cognitive change (i.e., reliable change indices [RCI] and standardized regression-based change scores [SRB]) and develop and internally validate clinically applicable models to predict postoperative memory decline.
