Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common type of arthritis characterized by degeneration of the articular cartilage and joint dysfunction. Various pharmacological and non-pharmacological techniques have been used to manage these diseases. Due to the diverse therapeutic properties of marine collagen, it has received considerable attention in its pharmacological application. Thus, the purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of jellyfish collagen, collagen peptide, other sources of marine collagen, and glycine in treating OA. In the OA rat model, an anterior cruciate ligament transection combine

The aim of this study was to clarify degradation characteristics in each tissue of the knee complex of a medial meniscectomy (MMx)-induced knee osteoarthritis (KOA) animal model using classical methods and an alternative comprehensive evaluation method called contrast-enhanced X-ray micro-computed tomography (CEX-μCT), which was developed in the study. Surgical MMx was performed in the right knee joints of five male Wistar rats to induce KOA. At four weeks post-surgery, the synovitis was evaluated using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Degradations of the articular cartilage of t

AIM: To examine the effect of glyceryl trinitrate (GTN), a nitric oxide (NO) donor compound, on the concurrent progression of cartilage and subchondral bone changes in an ovine meniscectomy model of osteoarthritis (OA).
METHODS: Bilateral lateral meniscectomy (MX) was performed on 12 ewes to induce OA. Six were treated with topical GTN (0.7mg/kg twice weekly) (MX+GTN). Six other sheep formed non-operated controls (NOC). After sacrifice at six months, the subchondral bone density (BMD) of the lateral and medial femoral condyles (LFC, MFC) and tibial plateau (LTP, MTP) was assessed by DEXA. Dyn

OBJECTIVE: To study the long-term outcome of surgical removal of a meniscus in the knee with regard to radiographic signs of osteoarthritis (OA).
METHODS: Of the 123 patients who underwent an open meniscectomy due to an isolated meniscus tear in 1973 at Lund University Hospital, 107 were followed up 21 years later by clinical examination and by review of knee radiographs obtained with weight bearing. Seventy-nine of the 107 patients were men, and the mean age of the total study group at examination was 55 years (range 35-77). Sixty-eight sex- and age-matched individuals with healthy knees ser

PURPOSE: To investigate lower extremity muscle strength and functional performance before and after arthroscopic partial meniscectomy in middle-aged patients with degenerative meniscal tears. We hypothesized that patients would experience deficiencies in the affected leg at 3 months post-surgery, and that this deficiency would be normalized at 12 months following surgery.
METHODS: Twenty-three patients (46 ± 6.5 years) meniscectomized in 2012 and 2013 were examined for knee extension, knee flexion, and hip abduction maximal isometric muscle strength (iMVC), rate of force development (RFD200),

This study investigated the long-term outcome of common meniscus treatment (meniscectomy, repair). A consecutive series of 30 patients with open meniscus repair were compared retrospectively to 30 patients who had an arthroscopic partial or subtotal meniscectomy. The groups were matched according to sex, age, meniscus lesion, and follow-up time. The patients were aged 13-43 years at the time of operation; all had intact cruciate ligaments, and none had had previous surgery on the knee. Patients were reexamined at a mean of 13 years after the operation. In addition, for a subgroup of 22 matched

The adoption of interventions in osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal care frequently precedes the availability of robust long-term evidence, creating the conditions for subsequent medical reversal. Recent findings raising concern about possible adverse neurocognitive associations with glucosamine use challenge the assumption that widely used supplements are necessarily biologically inert, although their causal significance and direct relevance to routine osteoarthritis management remain uncertain. In contrast, 10-year follow-up evidence after arthroscopic partial meniscectomy for degenerative m

Meniscal injuries lead to changes in pressure distribution in the knee joint. The risk of developing gonarthrosis increases by the amount of resected meniscal tissue. Based on 4 MRI examinations conducted over an 8‑year time period, the present case report shows the progress of cartilage degeneration after a traumatic medial meniscus lesion and subsequent partial meniscus resection in a 46-year-old male patient. Congenital or accident-independent risk factors, such as a varus limb deformity must be considered during a medical report.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to describe clinical and radiological long-term results of an arthroscopic partial meniscectomy associated with an outside-in decompressive needling of the cyst for lateral parameniscal cyst.
METHODS: Eighteen patients with symptomatic parameniscal cysts treated between April 2002 and September 2009 were retrospectively included in the study. All patients underwent arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (preserving peripheral rim) and needling of the cyst using a 20-gauge needle. Pre- and post-operative IKDC, Tegner, and Lysholm scores were used to evaluate

Study Design Descriptive, prospective single-cohort longitudinal study. Background Though rapid torque development is essential in activities of daily living and sports, it hasn't been specifically tested by most physical therapists or incorporated into rehabilitation programs until late in the treatment process. Little evidence is available on quadriceps torque development capacity before and after arthroscopic knee surgery. Objectives To study knee extensor rate of torque development, contributing mechanisms, and associations with strength and patient-reported outcomes before and during the

Significant meniscal loss with progression to osteoarthritis is common in humans. In vitro work suggests that meniscectomy causes increased joint contact stress, but what other alterations in dynamic joint actions actually occur remains unknown. In a sheep model, we tested the hypothesis that complete lateral meniscectomy increases joint abduction, shifting the in vivo locations of tibiofemoral contact to regions that qualitatively correspond to locations of chondral damage. Nine sheep underwent unilateral arthrotomy (n = 4) or arthrotomy plus complete lateral meniscectomy (n = 5). Kinematics

BACKGROUND: Hand-intensive surgical tasks expose the thumb and surrounding musculature to repetitive mechanical loading. Instrument design may influence the distribution of forces across the hand, yet quantitative data characterizing these loads during routine orthopedic procedures remain limited. This study quantified fingertip forces and thenar pressure during simulated meniscectomy using a pituitary rongeur and Ferris-Smith forceps.
METHODS: Orthopedic residents performed simulated meniscectomy on a porcine knee model while wearing TekScan pressure sensors. Each participant used both a pit

BACKGROUND: In-office needle arthroscopy (IONA) has been described as a diagnostic alternative to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for intra-articular pathology. However, few studies have analyzed its impact on cost and wait times when used as a therapeutic intervention. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact on cost and wait times associated with offering IONA for partial medial meniscectomy as an alternative to traditional operating room (OR) arthroscopy for patients with irreparable medial meniscus tears on MRI.
METHODS: Two models were created comparing the existing care

PURPOSE: The meniscus plays an important role in the knee joint. Meniscal tears are the most common knee injuries, are seen in all age groups and have several causes. Meniscectomy and meniscal repair, including open or arthroscopic procedures, are common operations for orthopaedic surgeons. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to review published articles that compared meniscal repair (open suture and arthroscopic inside-out procedures) with meniscectomy (arthroscopic partial or total meniscectomy) for short- or long-term outcomes and to determine which procedure leads to a better outcome.

BACKGROUND: Knee laxity increases with medial meniscectomy in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)-reconstructed knees; however, the biomechanical effect of an additional lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET) is unknown.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to determine the kinematic effect of a LET in knees that underwent combined ACL reconstruction (ACL-R) and partial medial meniscus posterior horn (MMPH) meniscectomy. It was hypothesized that the addition of LET would reduce laxity in the ACL-reconstructed knee.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.

OBJECTIVES: To assess whether partial meniscectomy is associated with increased risk of radiographic osteoarthritis (ROA) and worsening cartilage damage in the following year.
METHODS: We studied 355 knees from the Osteoarthritis Initiative that developed ROA (Kellgren-Lawrence grade ≥ 2), which were matched with control knees. The MR images were assessed using the semi-quantitative MOAKS system. Conditional logistic regression was applied to estimate risk of incident ROA. Logistic regression was used to assess the risk of worsening cartilage damage in knees with partial meniscectomy that dev

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence shows that arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) offers no benefit over conservative treatment of patients with a degenerative meniscus tear. However, patients who report mechanical symptoms (sensations of knee catching or locking) may benefit from APM.
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether APM improves mechanical symptoms better than sham surgery.
DESIGN: Randomized, patient- and outcome assessor-blinded, sham surgery-controlled, multicenter trial. (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT00549172).
SETTING: 5 orthopedic clinics in Finland.
PATIENTS: Adults (aged 35 to 65 years) with

Meniscectomy is a significant risk factor for osteoarthritis, involving altered cell synthesis, central fibrillation, and peripheral osteophyte formation. Though changes in articular cartilage contact pressure are known, changes in tissue-level mechanical parameters within articular cartilage are not well understood. Recent imaging research has revealed the effects of meniscectomy on the time-dependent deformation of physiologically loaded articular cartilage. To determine tissue-level cartilage mechanics that underlie observed deformation, a novel finite element modeling approach using imagin
