Association of menstrual cycle phase with the core components of empathy.

Evidence has accumulated that emotion recognition performance varies with menstrual cycle phase. However, according to some empathy models, facial affect recognition constitutes only one component of empathic behavior, besides emotional perspective taking and affective responsiveness. It remains unclear whether menstrual cycle phase and thus estradiol and progesterone levels are also associated with the two other empathy constructs. Therefore, we investigated 40 healthy right-handed females, 20 during their follicular phase and 20 during their midluteal phase and compared their performance in

The relationship of lipid profile and menstrual cycle with acne vulgaris.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to find lipid profile and hormone levels in patients with severe acne vulgaris and to correlate lipid profile with hormone levels. DESIGN AND METHODS: Prospective study was performed in the 60 patients of severe acne vulgaris. Lipid profile and serum testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone levels were measured in three consecutive menstrual cycles during luteal phase (19th to 21st day). Their results were compared with a group of 60 age-matched healthy controls. RESULTS: Total cholesterol (TC), LDL-C, testosterone, and progesterone levels were higher in

Susceptibility to nausea and motion sickness as a function of the menstrual cycle.

PURPOSE: The present study examined whether susceptibility to nausea and other symptoms of vection-induced motion sickness vary as a function of phase of the menstrual cycle, as research findings in this area are sparse and contradictory. DESIGN: Ninety young women (42 current users of oral contraceptives) were exposed to a rotating optokinetic drum during the peri-menses or peri-ovulatory phase of the menstrual cycle in an independent-groups, quasi-experimental design. Nausea and motion sickness symptoms were assessed using the Nausea Profile (NP) and the Subjective Symptoms of Motion Sickne

The menstrual cycle: a biological marker of general health in adolescents.

Menstruation is the cyclic, orderly sloughing of the uterine lining on account of the interactions of hormones produced by the hypothalamus, pituitary, and ovaries. There is a tendency among parents and clinicians to view oligo-amenorrhea as a normal variant in the teen years. In fact, the 95th percentile for the time interval between cycles is 90 days. Thus, it is abnormal for an adolescent to be amenorrheic for greater than 3 months, even in the early gynecologic years. Identification of abnormal menstrual patterns throughout adolescence may permit early identification of potential health co

The risk of seclusion and the menstrual cycle in female psychiatric patients.

The alleged clinically observed association between the use of seclusion and the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle was studied in 113 consecutively admitted female psychiatric patients by means of a monitoring of oestrogen and progesterone levels, the use of seclusion, age, drug use, regularity of menses, and a history of hysterectomy. Twenty-one patients (18.6%) were in the luteal phase. During the study period, 14 patients (12.4%) had to be secluded. No significant difference in the frequency of seclusion between luteal patients and patients in the other phases could be demonstrated. The f

Effects of exercise training on the menstrual cycle: existence and mechanisms.

This review evaluates the status of the evidence that exercise training affects the menstrual cycle beginning with evidence for the existence of delayed menarche, amenorrhea, and luteal suppression in athletes. A later age of menarche and a higher prevalence of amenorrhea and luteal suppression have been observed in athletes, but there is no experimental evidence that athletic training delays menarche, and alternative sociological and statistical explanations for delayed menarche have been offered. Cross-sectional studies of amenorrheic athletes have revealed abnormal reproductive hormone patt

Haemostatic and fibrinolytic properties of peritoneal fluid in the menstrual cycle.

The haemostatic and fibrinolytic properties of peritoneal fluid aspirated during laparoscopy were studied in a group of 49 women, 12 patients during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, and 37 during the luteal phase. Haemoglobin concentration and platelet count were low and similar in the pre- and post-ovulatory groups. Factor VIII was present in low concentrations both in the pre- and post-ovulatory period. The fibrinolytic and antifibrinolytic activity as judged by measurements of plasminogen, alpha 2-antiplasmin, fibrinogen degradation products, fibrinogen and antithrombin III, ros

[New model of the endocrine regulation of the female menstrual cycle].

Recent studies have modified remarkably our concepts regarding the hormonal control of the human menstrual cycle. The previously accepted hypothesis was mainly based on rat experiments. It postulated a single integrated hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian feedback system directed by a "CNS clock". Primate investigations now suggest two interrelated, but separable functional elements, i.e. a hypothalamic-pituitary unit and a gonadal-pituitary unit. The continuous pulsatile, yet unvarying hypothalamic secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) facilitates a direct pituitary response to changi

The correlation of histologic changes in the human breast with the menstrual cycle.

Histologic changes in the normal human mammary gland associated with the menstrual cycle were sought in tissues derived from a defined population of patients undergoing subcutaneous mastectomy or reduction mammoplasty for reasons other than neoplasia. Ninety patients were selected for their regular menstrual cycling, abstinence from hormone use, and absence of disease which might influence pituitary-ovarian cycling. Morphologic changes in the mammary stromal and epithelial components were identified as they related to specific pituitary-ovarian events, and histologic criteria were identified t

Vulnerability and defensive reactions in relation to the human menstrual cycle.

The effects of alterations of the organism's internal state, attributable to the menstrual cycle, upon heart-rate responsivity and conditioning are reported. Two groups of 24 female phobic patients (one with natural cycles and the other taking the oral contraceptive) were tested, either premenstrually or intermenstrually, using a conditioning procedure in which a small blue light was the CS and white noise the UCS. Subjects tested premenstrually were significantly differentiated from those tested intermenstrually respecting HR responsivity to the first UCS. Significant differences were also fo

Menstrual variation of autonomic balance may be a factor in exacerbations of certain diseases during the menstrual cycle.

Exacerbation of certain medical conditions during specific phases of the menstrual cycle has long been recognized. Mechanisms of the cyclic variations are poorly understood, but are often attributed to fluctuations in reproductive hormones. We hypothesize that normal variations in autonomic balance during the menstrual cycle, which likely evolved as adaptations for reproduction, may contribute to catamenial variations in diseases independent of hormonal variations. Emerging evidence suggests that autonomic balance shifts towards sympathetic bias during the second half of the menstrual cycle. T

Premenstrual asthma: prevalence, cycle-to-cycle variability and relationship to oral contraceptive use and menstrual symptoms.

The prevalence of asthma is higher in women than men of reproductive age and almost half of all hospitalisations for asthma in women occur during the perimenstrual phase of the cycle. The mechanisms of premenstrual asthma (PMA) are unknown and a definition of PMA has not been clearly presented in the literature. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of PMA using a variety of definitions, to investigate the cycle-to-cycle variation in PMA, the effects of oral contraceptive use and the relationship between PMA and premenstrual symptoms. Premenopausal women with asthma (n =

Patterns of menstrual cycle, menstrual pain and medication usage in young women from high- and middle-income countries.

RESEARCH QUESTION: Do patterns of the menstrual cycle, menstrual pain and the use of medication for menstrual pain differ between young women from high-income countries (HIC) and middle-income countries (MIC)? DESIGN: A multinational, multicentre, cross-sectional study using pen-and-paper questionnaires was conducted between 2016 and 2021 to assess patterns of the menstrual cycle, menstrual pain and the use of medication for menstrual pain. Various parameters were evaluated to identify high-risk factors for severe menstrual pain in women from two HIC (n = 1550) and nine MIC (n = 7139). RESUL

Effects of repeated menstrual pain on empathic neural responses in women with primary dysmenorrhea across the menstrual cycle.

Primary dysmenorrhea (PDM) is cyclic menstrual pain in the absence of pelvic anomalies, and it is thought to be a sex-hormone related disorder. Existing study has focused on the effects of menstrual cramps on brain function and structure, ignoring the psychological changes associated with menstrual pain. Here we examined whether pain empathy in PDM differs from healthy controls (HC) using task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Fifty-seven PDM women and 53 matched HC were recruited, and data were collected at the luteal and menstruation phases, respectively. During fMRI scans,

Association between menstrual cycle characteristics and mental health in early adolescence.

Adolescence marks a critical window for the emergence of mental health problems and reproductive maturation. Menstrual cycle characteristics - including pubertal timing, cycle regularity, menstrual pain, and premenstrual symptoms -may capture biological and experiential processes relevant to psychopathology. However, evidence linking menstrual features to a broad range of mental health outcomes, including ADHD symptoms, remains limited. Using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study (v6.1 N = 5,678 biological females; 17,567 post-menarche observations across 7 waves),
