Methylmercury (MeHg) is a bioaccumulative toxic contaminant in many ecosystems, but factors governing its production are poorly understood. Recent work has shown that the anaerobic microbial conversion of mercury (Hg) to MeHg requires the Hg-methylation genes hgcAB and that these genes can be used as biomarkers in PCR-based estimators of Hg-methylator abundance. In an effort to determine reliable methods for assessing hgcA abundance and diversity and linking them to MeHg concentrations, multiple approaches were compared including metagenomic shotgun sequencing, 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing and

Thermophilic membrane biofilm reactor (TMBR) for elemental mercury (Hg0) and NO removal in simulated flue gas was investigated at oxygen content of 6% and 60 °C. The performance, the microbial community structures, gene function and the mechanism for Hg0 and NO removal in the TMBR were evaluated. TMBR achieved effective simultaneous Hg0 and NO removal in 210 days of operation, Hg0 and NO removal efficiency were up to 88.9% and 85.3%, respectively. Mercury induced thermophilic community had been formed significantly. Comamonas, Pseudomonas, Desulfomicrobium, Burkholderia and Halomonas were ther

Immunoassays for heavy metals offer an alternative approach to traditional techniques for detection of mercury. In this study, a mercury-chelate was prepared with 1-(4-aminobenzyl) ethylenediamine-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (aminobenzyl-EDTA). The resulting complex was linked to keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) or bovine serum albumin via the amino group and used as the immunizing antigen or detection antigen, respectively. BALB/c mice were immunized with KLH-aminobenzyl-EDTA-Hg and spleen cells from BALB/C mice were fused with Sp2/0 cells. One cell line (5F7) produced monoclonal antibodies wit

In this paper we present the results of the formation of black HgS (metacinnabar) from liquid mercury and elemental sulfur using the mechanical energy provided by a ball mill in different conditions. Metacinnabar formation was observed even after short milling times (15 min) and unreacted liquid mercury was no longer detected after 60 min of milling. The reaction mechanism was monitored with a scanning electron microscope. The impact and friction forces of milling on the Hg and S mixture resulted in the formation of metacinnabar by reducing the size of mercury drops, giving rise to microsphere

The toxicologically relevant mercury species inorganic and organic Hg in blood are frequently determined by separate measurements of total Hg and of inorganic Hg, with their difference indicating organic Hg. It is shown that the different partition of inorganic and organic Hg between erythrocytes and plasma (e/p ratio) can be used to calculate the concentrations of either Hg species in either blood constituent from measurement of total Hg only. This was tested on the blood of different groups of volunteers. The calculated concentrations of inorganic and organic Hg in cells and plasma were then

The interaction between mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) is one of the best known examples of biological antagonism, yet the underlying mechanism remains unclear. This review focuses on the possible pathways leading to the Hg-Se antagonism, with an emphasis on the potential Hg-Se compounds that are responsible for the antagonism at the molecular level (i.e., bis[methylmercuric]selenide, methylmercury selenocysteinate, selenoprotein P-bound HgSe clusters, and the biominerals HgSe(x)S(1-x)). The presence of these compounds in biological systems has been suggested by direct or indirect evidence, an

Several studies have described mercury toxicity and the role of metallothioneins (MT) in the detoxification and regulation of metal homeostasis. However, little data exist on this topic during the specific post-natal developmental phase in young mammals. This developmental phase is particularly important since young animals are more sensitive to toxicants than adults. The objective of this work was to investigate whether MT participates in the mechanism of protection conferred by zinc pre-treatment on the toxic effects induced by mercury in neonate rats. Pups were exposed to ZnCl(2) (5 doses o

Terrestrial plants and soil contain substantial amounts of organic carbon (C) and mercury. Flooding terrestrial areas stimulates microbial methyl mercury (MeHg) production and fish obtain elevated MeHg concentrations. Our purpose was to determine the loss of C, total mercury (THg), and MeHg from boreal plants and soil after burning to assess the potential of burning before flooding to lower MeHg. Fresh plants contained 4 to 52 ng g(-1) dry weight (dw) of THg and 0.1 to 1.3 ng g(-1) dw of MeHg. Upland soils contained 162+/-132 ng g(-1) dw of THg and 0.6+/-0.6 ng g(-1) dw of MeHg. In this paper, the effect of mercury ion concentration on the preparation of mercury microelectrodes fabricated on a platinum microdisk of 10 microns radius was studied. The preparation of the mercury microelectrodes was followed by chronoamperometry, and the measurements were performed in Hg2(NO3)2 solutions with concentrations over the range 0.1-12.5 mM. The mercury microelectrode size was referred to as h/a, where h is the height of the mercury deposit and a is the radius of the inlaid microdisk. The mercury microelectrodes investigated had h/a values over the range 0-2. The results obtaine

Heavy metals such as lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and methyl mercury (MeHg) impair cell functions. For bone it is known that Pb changes bone formation rates, which depend on intracellular free calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i). Since heavy metals compete with Ca2+ at multiple sites and increased [Ca2+]i reduces gap junctional coupling between bone cells, we analyzed the effects of extracellular (e) and intracellular (i) application of Pb, Hg, and MeHg on these channels. Using primary cultures of osteoblast-like cells, relative changes of [Ca2+]i were studied in Fura-2/AM loaded cells. Parallel intra

Total (T-Hg) and inorganic (I-Hg) mercury in blood and brain of female Macaca fascicularis monkeys, exposed to daily peroral doses of methyl mercury (MeHg; 50 micrograms Hg/kg body wt) for 6, 12, or 18 months, or to continuous iv infusion of HgCl2 (200 micrograms Hg/kg body wt) for 3 months, were determined. In normal weight monkeys (2.4-4.1 kg body wt) exposed to MeHg, steady state of T-Hg in blood (1.1 micrograms Hg/g) was reached in about 4 months. The elimination T1/2 in blood was 26 days. I-Hg constituted 7% of T-Hg in blood. The average concentration of MeHg in occipital pole and thalamu

Researchers have identified mercury as one of the most toxic environmental pollutants, with deleterious effects on human health and biota. Microorganisms play a key role in the accumulation, degradation, and neutralisation of mercury. Numerous bacteria, fungi, and microalgae possess the mer operon and its homologues, which contain genes responsible for the transport and detoxification of mercury compounds. Mercury-tolerant Microorganisms efficiently convert mercury into less toxic forms. Their tolerance characteristics position them as promising agents for the remediation of ecosystems altered

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic trace element of global environmental concern which has been increasingly dispersed into the environment since the industrial revolution. In aquatic and terrestrial systems, Hg can be reduced to elemental Hg (Hg0) and escape to the atmosphere or converted to methylmercury (MeHg), a potent neurotoxin that accumulates in food webs. FeII-bearing minerals such as magnetite, green rusts, siderite, and mackinawite are recognized HgII reducers. Another potentially Hg-reducing mineral, which commonly occurs in Fe- and organic/P-rich sediments and soils, is the ferrous iron phos

Large numbers of individuals suffered severe neurological effects from poisoning with methyl mercury from the consumption of fish contaminated by industrial discharge in Minamata in the 1950s and 1960s and from bread made from fungicide-treated wheat in the early 1970s in Iraq. In both episodes, infants exposed in utero showed developmental delays. Data from Iraq permitted the estimation of dose-response relationships and provided evidence of greater sensitivity of the foetal brain compared to adult. Studies in a number of communities regularly consuming fish have sought to determine whether a

BACKGROUND: Human exposure to mercury leads to a variety of pathologies involving numerous organ systems including the immune system. A paucity of epidemiological studies and suitable diagnostic criteria, however, has hampered collection of sufficient data to support a causative role for mercury in autoimmune diseases. Nevertheless, there is evidence that mercury exposure in humans is linked to markers of inflammation and autoimmunity. This is supported by experimental animal model studies, which convincingly demonstrate the biological plausibility of mercury as a factor in the pathogenesis of

Mercury is among the most toxic heavy metals and has no known physiological role in humans. Three forms of mercury exist: elemental, inorganic and organic. Mercury has been used by man since ancient times. Among the earliest were the Chinese and Romans, who employed cinnabar (mercury sulfide) as a red dye in ink (Clarkson et al. 2007). Mercury has also been used to purify gold and silver minerals by forming amalgams. This is a hazardous practice, but is still widespread in Brazil's Amazon basin, in Laos and in Venezuela, where tens of thousands of miners are engaged in local mining activities
