Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Intracranial Hypotension: Diagnostic Value of Combined Qualitative Signs and Quantitative Metrics.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the use of combination quantitative metrics (mamillopontine distance [MPD], pontomesencephalic angle, and mesencephalon anterior-posterior/medial-lateral diameter ratios) with qualitative signs (dural enhancement, subdural collections/hematoma, venous engorgement, pituitary gland enlargements, and tonsillar herniations) provides a more accurate diagnosis of intracranial hypotension (IH). METHODS: The quantitative metrics and qualitative signs of 34 patients and 34 control subjects were assessed by 2 independent observers. Receiver op

(+)MK-801 does not prevent MPTP-induced loss of nigral neurons in mice.

The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of 5-methyl-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cyclohepten-5,10-imine [(+)MK-801] on 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced nigrostriatal damage in the mouse, with the goal of clearly defining what protective effects, if any, this noncompetitive N-methyl-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine receptor antagonist may have against MPTP neurotoxicity. Animals were treated with MPTP (40 mg/kg s.c.) and/or (+)MK-801 (3 x 1 mg/kg i.p. at 4-hr intervals starting 30 min before MPTP) and were killed at 8 hr and 1, 7 and 21 days after MPTP

The human brain at stages 21-23, with particular reference to the cerebral cortical plate and to the development of the cerebellum.

The development of the human brain during the eighth embryonic week was studied in serial sections of 22 embryos, and graphic reconstructions were prepared. The cortical plate appears in stage 21 in the area of the future insula and is an excellent feature for staging. The internal capsule contains neocortical fibres. Its three main outlets begin to be present in stage 22 and lead to epithalamus, to dorsal thalamus, and to mesencephalon. At this time a well developed lateral olfactory tract can be seen. The anterior commissure appears in stage 23. A clear developmental relationship between cla

Endoscopic third ventriculostomy limited by artery of Percheron.

The irrigation of the thalamus depends mainly on the thalamoperforating arteries. There are many anatomical variations in these arteries, the best known being the artery of Percheron. We report a case of a 13-year-old male presented with headache and decline in his mental status. Imaging features showed obstructive hydrocephalus secondary to a mass at the level of the mesencephalon so an endoscopic third ventriculostomy was performed. During the procedure a thalamoperforating artery was encountered at the level of the tuber cinereum limiting the perforation of the third ventricle floor. The pr

Superficial hemosiderosis of the central nervous system. A case report.

A case of idiopathic superficial hemosiderosis (SH) of the central nervous system and a review of the literature are presented. The patient suffered from progressive cerebellar ataxia, hearing loss, anosmia, spastic paraparesis, but no mental deterioration. The diagnosis was made with brain and spinal MRI, that showed in T2 weighted images superficial hypointensity of spinal cord, medulla oblungata, pons, mesencephalon, cerebellum and cerebral hemispheres, images that are considered pathognomonic of SH. Repeated spinal fluid examinations were negative, suggesting that evidence of overt subarac

Gangliosides and parkinsonism.

The protective effect of GM1 ganglioside against nerve cell death induced by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) was analyzed in monkey mesencephalon. Administration of GM1 before and during MPTP treatment improved motor performances compared with MPTP-treated animals that received saline rather than GM1. Postmortem analysis revealed that GM1 did not protect dopaminergic cell bodies from MPTP intoxication but resulted in an increased immunoreactivity of tyrosine hydroxylase in the perikarya and processes of the surviving neurons. These data suggest that GM1 may be potentially u

Subarachnoid haemorrhage in the rat: effect on the development of vasospasm of selective lesions of the catecholamine systems in the lower brain stem.

Intracisternal injection of blood in the rat produces an angiographically demonstrable biphasic vasospasm. Lesioning at the level of the mesencephalon of the ascending catecholamine pathways from locus coeruleus in the pons and the A1 and A2 nuclei in the medulla oblongata prior to cisternal blood injection prevents the development of both acute and late spasm. Selective lesioning in the medulla oblongata of ascending fibres from A1 and A2 also prevents development of spasm, indicating that these nuclei, which project to the hypothalamus-pituitary, are essential for the spasm syndrome. It is s

Computed tomography in oculocraniosomatic disease (Kearns-Sayre syndrome).

Computed tomography (CT) in patients with oculocraniosomatic disease (OCSD) or Kearns-Sayre syndrome has not been previously reported to the authors' knowledge. CT scans were performed in 6 children and 3 adults with OCSD. Abnormalities in children included: intracranial calcifications (4 patients); white matter disease (3 patients); cerebellar hypoplasia (1 patient); and scattered areas of decreased density in the cerebellar hemispheres, mesencephalon, and thalamus (1 patient). CT scans were normal in all adults. OCSD should be considered in the differential diagnosis in patients with intracr

Modifications of longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis and brainstem lesions in the course of neuromyelitis optica (NMO): a population-based, descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) includes transverse myelitis, optic neuritis and brain lesions. Recent studies have indicated that the brainstem is an important site of attack in NMO. Longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM) is an important component of the clinical diagnosis of NMO. The frequency of brainstem and LETM lesions, changes over time of LETM and the clinical consequences in the course of NMO have only been sparsely studied. METHODS: The study was a population-based retrospective case series with clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) follow-up of 35 patien

Internuclear ophthalmoplegia and cerebellar ataxia: report of one case.

Deep hemispheric or brainstem small infarcts can lead to atypical lacunar syndromes. Unilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO) and cerebellar ataxia has not been reported previously. A 57-year-old hypertensive female presented with bilateral appendicular and left truncal cerebellar ataxia and right INO. Cranial MRI showed a right paramedian infarct of lacunar size located in the tegmentum of caudal mesencephalon. At this level the involvement of medial longitudinal fascicle (MLF) led to right INO and the lesion of brachium conjunctivum caused the bilateral cerebellar ataxia. Ipsilateral in

MR imaging of progressive downward herniation of the diencephalon.

Some clinicians have challenged the clinicopathologic correlation in patients with brain herniation from acute mass lesions. Earlier studies have questioned the significance of downward displacement of the brainstem in supratentorial herniation. Using recent generation MRI, we studied a patient with an acute hemorrhagic infarction. MRI demonstrated significant compression of the diencephalon with downward displacement of the midbrain and hyperintensity on T2-weighted sequences in the lateral mesencephalon during progression from early diencephalic stage to midbrain upper pons stage of herniati

Dyke-Davidoff-Masson syndrome.

We reported five cases of Dyke-Davidoff-Masson syndrome (DDMS) with different clinical and radiological findings. The evaluated parameters were the location of the lesions, midline structural shift effect, pathological and morphological changes on the ipsilateral calvarium, paranasal sinuses and mesencephalon, presence of compensatory contralateral hypertrophy. With the help of both magnetic resonance (MR) and computerized tomography (CT) images, changing degrees of all the evaluated parameters were observed in all five of our patients. In conclusion, no relationship was found between parenchy

The periaqueductal gray matter mediates opiate-induced immunosuppression.

The periaqueductal gray matter of the mesencephalon (PAG) subserves a variety of diverse autonomic functions and also appears to be a site for opiate action in the induction of immunosuppression. Microinjections of morphine into the PAG, but not into other opiate receptor-containing neuroanatomical sites, result in a rapid suppression of natural killer (NK) cell activity. The NK cell suppression can be blocked by prior peripheral administration of the opiate antagonist naltrexone. These findings demonstrate that certain central actions of opiates that produce changes in NK cell function are me

Central nervous system neuroblastoma in a wild deer (Capreolus capreolus).

This report describes a central nervous system (CNS) neuroblastoma in a wild deer (Capreolus capreolus) of approximate age 10 years. The doe was found in a barn with a fractured right forelimb and was shot. The animal was submitted for post-mortem examination in order to exclude rabies. The tumour was located in the midline of the mesencephalon with replacement of thalamus and parts of the hypothalamus and infiltration into the adjacent neuroparenchyma and the right lateral and third ventricles. Microscopically, the neoplastic cells were arranged in sheets and nests forming Homer-Wright- and p

Structural Characterization and Antidepressant-like Effects of Polygonum sibiricum Polysaccharides on Regulating Microglial Polarization in Chronic Unpredictable Mild Stress-Induced Zebrafish.

Polysaccharides are one of the main active ingredients of Polygonum sibiricum (PS), which is a food and medicine homolog used throughout Chinese history. The antidepressant-like effects of PSP and its underlying mechanisms remain elusive, especially the regulation of microglial polarization. The current study determined the chemical composition and structural characteristics of PSP. Then, the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) procedure was carried out on the zebrafish for 5 weeks, and PSP was immersed for 9 days (1 h/d). The body weight of zebrafish was monitored, and behavioral tests,

Abnormal hippocampal functional network and related memory impairment in pilocarpine-treated rats.

OBJECTIVE: Although abnormal hippocampal structure and impaired spatial memory have been revealed in a pilocarpine rat model of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), the brain functional network changes are still unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the changes of brain functional connectivity related to the hippocampus and the associated memory impairment in a pilocarpine model of TLE. METHODS: Functional magnetic resonance imaging signals were recorded in pilocarpine-treated rats and controls by using a 7.0 T magnetic resonance scanner, and independent component analysis was per

Spontaneous migration of a bullet in the cerebrum.

Herein, we report the case of a 32-year-old man who experienced spontaneous migration of a bullet within the brain following a gunshot injury. Emergent computed tomography revealed the bullet located in the posterosuperior side of mesencephalon. During follow-up after 10 days, the neurological status of the patient had worsened. Computed tomography revealed that the bullet had migrated posteriorly and lodged in the occipital lobe. Although a few studies have reported on the spontaneous migration of a bullet within the brain, the present case is unique as the patient examination changed with mi
