The authors present marsh rat Holochilus brasiliensis, jirds Meriones shawi and M. unguiculatus as new models of Schistosoma haematobium infection. Histological findings were compared with those of classic models mouse Mus and hamster Mesocricetus. In new models, embryonated eggs were seen in the stool from 90 days post infestation (DPI) and active disease developed from 117 to 175 DPI. Seven out of 10 rodents presented granulomatous and/or chronic cystitis, fibrosis, polyps and urothelial changes: squamous metaplasia, precancerous dysplasia and squamous cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder.

Hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) were inoculated with L. (L.) chagasi and killed on days 7, 15, 30, 45 and 60 after infection. Four strains of Leishmania tropica s. st. from Afghanistan were found to be constantly infective to the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus), whether inoculated as culture promastigotes from early passages or as amastigotes from the cutaneous lesions. Human sperm chromosomes were studied in a man heterozygous for a paracentric inversion of chromosome 7 (q11q22). The pronuclear chromosomes were analysed after in vitro penetration of golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) eggs. Ninety-four sperm chromosome spreads were examined, of which 34 contained the normal number 7 chromosome and 59 the inverted 7. In this survey, intestinal helminths from pet rodents in Mérida, México, were analyzed. A total of 46 mice Mus musculus, 28 hamsters Mesocricetus auratus, 23 rats Rattus norvegicus, and 1 gerbil Meriones unguiculatus were purchased from six pet shops and one black market for wildlife in the city of Mérida. BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis causes alterations and lesions in the genital system, which leads to azoospermia and testicular atrophy in animals during the chronic phase of the infection. The aim of this study was to reveal the kinetics of Leishmania chagasi infection in the genital system of male golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).
