Enhancing Four-Carbon Olefin Production from Acetylene over Copper Nanoparticles in Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Four-carbon olefins, such as 1-butene and 1,3-butadiene, are important chemical feedstocks for the production of adhesives and synthetic rubber. These compounds are found in the C4 fraction of "green oil" products that can arise during the hydrogenation of acetylene. Here, we demonstrate that control of the catalyst structure increases the yield and productivity of these important olefins with a family of catalyst materials comprising Cu nanoparticles (CuNPs) bound within the pores of Zr-based metal-organic frameworks. Using carbon monoxide as a probe molecule, we characterize the surfaces of

Aggregation induced emission of amino-thiol capped gold nanoparticles (GNPs) through metal-amino-coordination.

Au11(SG)7 gold nanoparticles (GNPs) were synthesized from HAuCl4 using thiol compounds containing an amino group to serve as both the reducing agent and the ligand. A three-dimensional network structure (…Au-SNH2→Mn+⟵H2NS-Au…) was formed after the Mn+ (Pb2+, Cd2+, Zn2+ and Ag+) coordinated the gold nanoparticles through the amino group in the thiol ligand, which promoted aurophilicity (…Au…Au…) and induced GNP aggregation and emission. The differences in coordination between the amino group and metal ions resulted in different emission wavelengths (Pb2+, Cd2+, Zn2+ and Ag+: λex = 365 nm˜370 nm

Scalable fabrication of metal-phenolic nanoparticles by coordination-driven flash nanocomplexation for cancer theranostics.

Although various nanomaterials have been developed for cancer theranostics, there remains a key challenge for effective integration of therapeutic drugs and diagnostic agents into a single multicomponent nanoparticle via a simple and scalable approach. Moreover, the bottlenecks of nanoformulation in composition controllability, colloidal stability, drug loading capability and batch-to-batch repeatability currently still hinder the clinical translation of nanomedicine. Herein, we report a coordination-driven flash nanocomplexation (cFNC) process to achieve scalable fabrication of doxorubicin-ba

Hybrid films with graphene oxide and metal nanoparticles could now replace indium tin oxide.

Graphene oxide (G-O), a highly oxidized sheet of sp(2)-hybridized carbon with insulating electrical properties, can be transformed into graphene if it is adequately reduced. In the past, researchers believed that reduced G-O (rG-O) could be highly conducting, but it has been shown that the presence of extended vacancies and defects within rG-O negatively affect its electrical transport. Although these observations indicated that rG-O could not be used in the fabrication of any electronic device, in this issue of ACS Nano, Ruoff's group demonstrates that rG-O can indeed be used for producing ef

Unravelling the Mechanistic Understanding of Metal Nanoparticle-Induced Reactive Oxygen Species Formation: Insights from a Cu Nanoparticle Study.

Humans can be exposed to engineered and nonintentionally formed metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (Me NPs) in occupational settings, in public transportation areas, or by means of contact with different consumer products. A critical factor in the toxic potency of Me NPs is their ability to induce oxidative stress. It is thus essential to assess the potential reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation properties of Me NPs. A common way to assess the relative extent of ROS formation in vitro is to use fluorescence spectroscopy with the DCFH-DA (2',7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate) probe, with and

Designing the Nanoconfined Environment for Energy-Efficient Metal Nanoparticle/Ligand-Based Electrocatalysts.

Nanoconfined electrocatalysts demonstrate enhanced selectivity and activity owing to new phenomena emerging from chemical species confined at the interface. Creating these nanoconfined pockets at the interface is not trivial. We need highly negative potentials to create the pockets in metal/ligand catalysts like Ag-nanoparticle/ordered ligand interlayer catalysts. Lowering this activation potential can make the electrocatalysis more energy-efficient, and changes in the environment can impact this potential. We used Density Functional Theory (DFT) to evaluate the impact of ligand length and den
