[Exposure to metals, metalloids and their compounds in heavy metals refining].

BACKGROUND: In the process of heavy metals refining, workers are first of all exposed to metals, metalloids (As, Se) and their compounds. Moreover, they are exposed to sulphuric acid and dusts (about 2% SiO2). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Several dozen workers in two Polish plants were studied (Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn, and Ag refining processes, production of Ni sulphate and production of Se). Cd, Ni, Se, Cu, Pb, As and Ag were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) with graphite tube, whereas ZnO (as Zn) by AAS with air-acetylene flame. Sulphuric acid was determined by the method given in PN-91

The hard metal diseases.

Hard metal is a mixture of tungsten carbide and cobalt, to which small amounts of other metals may be added. It is widely used for industrial purposes whenever extreme hardness and high temperature resistance are needed, such as for cutting tools, oil well drilling bits, and jet engine exhaust ports. Cobalt is the component of hard metal that can be a health hazard. Respiratory diseases occur in workers exposed to cobalt--either in the production of hard metal, from machining hard metal parts, or from other sources. Adverse pulmonary reactions include asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and

Urinary metabolic alterations associated with occupational exposure to metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons based on non-target metabolomics.

Long-term occupational exposure to metals and organics have been reported to be under great health risks. However, limited data are available on the molecular mechanism between combined exposure to metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and harmful health effects. In present work, non-target metabolomics study was conducted based on urine samples from nonferrous metal smelting workers (n = 207), surrounding residents (n = 180), and the control residents (n = 187) by using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QT

Transplantation for work-related lung disease in the USA.

OBJECTIVES: Work-related lung diseases (WRLDs) are entirely preventable. To assess the impact of WRLDs on the US transplant system, we identified adult lung transplant recipients with a WRLD diagnosis specified at the time of transplant to describe demographic, payer and clinical characteristics of these patients and to assess post-transplant survival. METHODS: Using US registry data from 1991 to 2018, we identified lung transplant recipients with WRLDs including coal workers' pneumoconiosis, silicosis, asbestosis, metal pneumoconiosis and berylliosis. RESULTS: The frequency of WRLD-associat

Characterization of exposures among cemented tungsten carbide workers. Part II: Assessment of surface contamination and skin exposures to cobalt, chromium and nickel.

Cobalt, chromium and nickel are among the most commonly encountered contact allergens in the workplace, all used in the production of cemented tungsten carbides (CTC). Exposures to these metal-containing dusts are frequently associated with skin sensitization and/or development of occupational asthma. The objectives of this study were to assess the levels of cobalt, chromium and nickel on work surfaces and on workers' skin in three CTC production facilities. At least one worker in each of 26 work areas (among all facilities) provided hand and neck wipe samples. Wipe samples were also collected

Multiple impalement injuries of the torso with two metal bars: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Impalement injury is a type of penetrating trauma that is rarely mentioned and studied in the medical literature. Patients who could show up at the emergency room are those who got an isolated stab wound in their extremities. The torso injuries are usually fatal in the scene of the accident. We report two metal bars that impaled in the pelvic, back, abdomen and thorax of the patient who was admitted in OR directly. CASE PRESENTATION: A 20 year-old construction worker fell down on two metal bars. At the scene; we cut the metallic bars off the column and then we tra

[Various factors influencing toxicity and metabolism of metals--metal-metal interactions and host factors (author's transl)].

This paper is a brief overview on metal-metal interactions and various other factors involved in the toxicity and metabolism of metals, including host factors, nutrition, habits, etc. Humans and other organisms are exposed to various metals in many ways, and even in an occupation in which workers are exposed to a metal such as lead, they are at the same time also exposed to other metals, although concentrations of these latter metals are usually not very high. This can result in effects different from those produced by a single metal by itself. Furthermore, individual differences which are cau

[Evaluation of occupational exposure to nickel and other metals based on the analysis of air in the production of nickel alloys].

The measurements of air pollutions in the rolling mill of non-ferrous metals aimed at the evaluation of occupational exposure to nickel and other metals (Cu, Zn, Mn, Mg) used during the production of nickel alloys. It was found that nickel fumes and dusts concentration can be the only hazardous factor for the workers' health. The majority (ca 85%) of the crew of 28 workers is exposed to the nickel concentration in air exceeding 0.05 mg/m3. Smelters (8 persons) at the stand of 97-99% nickel smelting are at the highest risk of the loss of health; average exposure of this group during 8 hours' sh

A study of occupational skin disease in the metal industry (1986-1990).

A retrospective study of the epidemiology of occupational skin disease among metal workers showed that irritant contact dermatitis (75%) prevailed over allergic contact dermatitis. Most workers belonged to the age group 20 to 29 years. There was a slight preponderance of Malays and Indians compared to the working population of Singapore. Most presented for treatment within 10 days of their dermatitis. Ninety-five percent presented with dermatitis on the hands and arms. There was no significant difference in the prevalence of atopy between workers with irritant and allergic contact dermatitis.

Biomarkers for responses to heavy metals.

Biomarkers for pathophysiological responses to heavy metals are described with special reference to immunotoxic responses to them. Autoantibody induction in animals by exposure to cadmium is exemplified and discussed on its relevance to pathogenesis of cadmium-induced renal disease. The availability of autoantibodies as a mechanism-oriented biomarker is discussed further in association with cases of autoantibody induction in heavy metal workers.

Occupational risk factors for renal cell cancer: a case--control study in northern Italy.

Relatively little is known about occupational and other risk factors for renal-cell carcinoma (RCC). Associations between RCC and occupations, exposures and other factors were investigated in a hospital-based case-control study in Bologna (central-northern Italy). Between 1986 and 1994, 324 histologically confirmed RCC cases were diagnosed at Policlinico S. Orsola-Malpighi in patients from the Province of Bologna. Corresponding control subjects admitted to the same hospital with any diagnosis except RCC were matched for sex, age, and residency. We studied the 249 cases and 238 controls for who

Occupational Dermatoses.

Occupational skin diseases (OSDs) are one of the major problems in working life. Among occupational diseases, 30-45% are skin diseases. Contact dermatitis accounts for the greatest part (95%) of OSDs. It adversely affects the quality of life of workers. Classification of OSD is too difficult as there are geographical variations in the occupational groups affected. However, commonly affected occupational groups are agricultural workers, healthcare workers, construction workers, metal workers, cleaners, housekeepers, food handlers, hairdressers, beauticians, and mechanics. Because of the unorgan

Imaging diagnosis of pneumoconiosis with predominant nodular pattern: HRCT and pathologic findings.

The radiological patterns of known pneumoconiosis have been changing in recent years. The basic pathology in pneumoconiosis is the presence of dust macules, mixed dust fibrosis, nodules, diffuse interstitial fibrosis, and progressive massive fibrosis. These pathologic changes can coexist in dust-exposed workers. High resolution CT reflects pathological findings in pneumoconiosis and is useful for the diagnosis. Pneumoconiosis such as silicosis, coal workers' pneumoconiosis, graphite pneumoconiosis, and welder's pneumoconiosis, has predominant nodular HRCT pattern. Diffuse interstitial pulmonar

Cobalt sensitization and dermatitis: considerations for the clinician.

This clinical review article presents clinical and scientific data on cobalt sensitization and dermatitis. It is concluded that cobalt despite being a strong sensitizer and a prevalent contact allergen to come up on patch testing should be regarded as a very complex metal to test with. Exposure data together with clinical data from metal workers heavily exposed to cobalt suggest that patch-test reactions are sometimes false positive and that patch testers should carefully evaluate their clinical relevance.

Discovering complexes containing a metal-metal quintuple bond: from theory to practice.

Although the field of metal-to-metal multiple bonding has been considered as mature, it was recently reinvigorated by the discovery of quintuple bonded dinuclear complexes. Initiated by theoretical studies, quintuple bonding was promoted by the recognition of the first isolable quintuple bonded chromium phenyl dimer Ar'CrCrAr' (Ar' = 2,6-(2,6-(i)Pr2C6H3)2C6H3) by Power and co-workers in 2005. Soon afterwards, many dinuclear group VI metal-to-metal quintuple bonded complexes stabilized by sterically hindered N-based bidentate ligands were subsequently characterized. All these remarkable compoun
