The chemistry and toxicity of discharge waters from copper mine tailing impoundment in the valley of the Apuseni Mountains in Romania.

Copper mining generates large quantities of waste, tailings, and acid outflows causing long-term environmental impacts and potential threats to human health. Valea Şesei is the largest tailing impoundment in Romania, created by flooding the valley (known as Valea Şesei) of the Metalliferous Mountains (a division of the Apuseni Mountains) with copper mining waste. The present study (i) estimated the total volume of tailings in this area; (ii) screened the concentration of 65 elements (rare earth and platinum group elements, alkali metals and alkali earth metals, transition and post-transition m

Divergent redistribution behavior of arsenic and antimony during schwertmannite transformation in presence of cysteine.

Schwertmannite, a key metastable iron phase in acid mine drainage, governs the environmental geochemical fate of As(V) and Sb(V). The stability of schwertmannite and the fate of the associated contaminants are readily influenced by reducing organic matter. This study investigated the transformation of schwertmannite and the differential partitioning of co-precipitated As(V) and co-precipitated Sb(V) driven by cysteine at pH 6.5. The results show that cysteine induced the transformation of schwertmannite into goethite in the absence of As(V) and Sb(V). The co-precipitated Sb(V) accelerated this

Atomic engineering of intrinsic permanent magnetism in MnBi.

The low-temperature phase MnBi has been a focus of rare-earth free permanent magnet research because of its atypical behavior of magnetic anisotropy and coercivity enhancements at an elevated temperature. Using systematic density functional theory, density functional perturbation theory, and Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the structural stability and intrinsic magnetic properties of MnBi with metal and metalloid substitute elements. We theoretically demonstrate that the low magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the MnBi plane can reorient to a large uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy (

Internal and external spatial analysis of trace elements in local crayfish.

Pollution in urban environments is a major health concern for humans as well as the local wildlife and aquatic species. Anthropogenic waste and discharge from storm drainage accumulate nutrients and environmental contaminants in local water systems. Locating contaminated sites using water samples over the vast landscape is a daunting task. Crayfish thrive in urban environments and have been used for biomonitoring pollutants. This study aimed to use crayfish as sentinels to monitor for elements in local environments. In this study, crayfish were used to measure metals and metalloids in lotic en

Metal concentrations in coastal sharks from The Bahamas with a focus on the Caribbean Reef shark.

Over the last century anthropogenic activities have rapidly increased the influx of metals and metalloids entering the marine environment, which can bioaccumulate and biomagnify in marine top consumers. This may elicit sublethal effects on target organisms, having broad implications for human seafood consumers. We provide the first assessment of metal (Cd, Pb, Cr, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Ag, and THg) and metalloid (As) concentrations in the muscle tissue of coastal sharks from The Bahamas. A total of 36 individual sharks from six species were evaluated, spanning two regions/study areas, with a foc

Assessing aquaglyceroporin gene status and expression profile in antimony-susceptible and -resistant clinical isolates of Leishmania donovani from India.

OBJECTIVES: Clinical resistance to pentavalent antimonials results from an interplay between uptake, efflux and sequestration in Leishmania. Aquaglyceroporins (AQPs) have been shown to facilitate uptake of trivalent metalloids. Down-regulation of AQP1 in Leishmania results in resistance to trivalent antimony, whereas overexpression of AQP1 in drug-resistant parasites can reverse the resistance. The present work investigates the role of AQP1 in monitoring antimonial resistance in Indian leishmaniasis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Susceptibility to trivalent antimony as determined in vitro with intrace

{Ge8[Fe(CO)4]8}7-: an anionic cubic germanium-iron-cluster featuring an unpaired electron.

Within the reaction of a metastable Ge(I)Cl solution and Na2Fe2(CO)8 the anionic cubic cluster compound {(thf)14Na6Ge8[Fe(CO)4]8}- (3) is obtained. The open shell character of 3 is proven by EPR spectroscopy. Quantum chemical calculations furthermore show that also the closed shell systems should be stable, but could not be isolated so far. Additionally, 3 can be seen as an intermediate cluster compound on the formation of metalloid clusters.

Environmental risk ranking of 20 metal(loid)s in urban runoff: A Swedish nationwide meta-analysis.

This meta-analysis integrates data from 182 runoff events across 15 Swedish sites representing diverse land uses and seasonal conditions to identify and prioritize metals of concern in urban areas. Using a data-driven risk assessment, we compared concentrations and environmental risks of 20 metal(loid)s against international databases and regulatory thresholds, evaluating both acute and chronic effects while accounting for bioavailability for seven metals. Event- and site-level analyses revealed large temporal and spatial variability in concentrations and risks, reflecting differences in emiss

Metal(loid)s and human semen quality: The LIFE Study.

Multiple studies have demonstrated a global population-wide decline in semen quality, with sperm concentrations having fallen 50 % over the past 50 years. Several metal and metalloid ("metal(loid)") compounds are known to have testicular toxicity, raising concerns about their contribution to rising infertility. In the male reproductive tract, metal(loid)s can reduce semen quality and disturb function both directly, by inducing tissue damage, and indirectly, by disrupting hormone production and secretion. This study assessed associations between 15 creatinine-adjusted metal(loid)s and 7 measure

Effects of red earthworms (Eisenia fetida) on leachability of lead minerals in soil.

Contamination of soils by metals and metalloids is an important environmental problem in many residential and industrial sites around the world. Lead is a common contaminant, which enters the soil through mining, industrial activities and waste disposal. A range of technologies can be used to remediate soil lead, however most remediation technologies adversely affect the environment and particularly soil biota. We have assessed the efficacy of vermiremediation (the use of earthworms for remediation) to reduce water extractable lead concentrations in soil. Earthworms were introduced to a sandy

Comprehensive profiling of metal compound toxicity: potential novel targets and mechanistic insights using Tox21 screening.

Metals and metalloids are widely used in industrial applications, and increasing experimental and epidemiological evidence has linked metal exposure to adverse health outcomes. However, the underlying mechanisms for these effects have not been fully understood. As a part of the Toxicology in 21st century (Tox21) program, we have screened more than 150 metal-containing compounds and their salt forms across over 90 biological endpoints. In this study, we analyzed the comprehensive toxicity of metal compounds using Tox21 screening data to enhance the understanding of their mechanism and molecular

Metal Homeostasis Imbalance as Potentially Contributing Mechanism in Onset of Cardiac Disorders in Individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Chronic Kidney Disease.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are common non-communicable diseases associated with disturbances in metal and metalloid homeostasis and an increased risk of cardiovascular disorders. However, the mechanisms underlying these associations remain incompletely understood. Therefore, this study investigated whether COPD or CKD is associated with altered accumulation of selected metals and metalloids in the left ventricular myocardium. We analyzed 57 autopsy-derived left ventricular myocardial specimens, including 12 individuals with COPD, 11 with CKD,

Baseline tissue concentrations of metal in aquatic oligochaetes: Field and laboratory approaches.

Metal tissue residue evaluation in benthic macroinvertebrates is an important component of an integrated approach to ecological risk assessment of metals and metalloids in the Nalón River basin (North Spain), where historic mining activities took place. The purpose of this study was to know the baseline tissue concentration of 7 metals (Cd, Cu, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) and one metalloid (As) in aquatic oligochaetes, sediment burrower organisms, representative of the collector-gatherer functional feeding group in the macroinvertebrate community. Metal concentration was measured in sediment and f

Roles of Extracellular Polysaccharides and Biofilm Formation in Heavy Metal Resistance of Rhizobia.

Bacterial surface components and extracellular compounds, particularly flagella, lipopolysaccharides (LPSs), and exopolysaccharides (EPSs), in combination with environmental signals and quorum-sensing signals, play crucial roles in bacterial autoaggregation, biofilm development, survival, and host colonization. The nitrogen-fixing species Sinorhizobium meliloti (S. meliloti) produces two symbiosis-promoting EPSs: succinoglycan (or EPS I) and galactoglucan (or EPS II). Studies of the S.meliloti/alfalfa symbiosis model system have revealed numerous biological functions of EPSs, including host sp

Ruthenium-Catalyzed Nitrile-Acrylate Reductive Coupling by 2-Propanol: Synthesis of Enantioenriched β-Amino Esters.

Using a ruthenium catalyst derived from RuHCl(CO)(PPh3)3 and Cy-BIPHEP, 2-propanol-mediated reductive coupling of phenyl acrylate with aromatic or aliphatic nitriles occurs to form α,β-unsaturated β-amino esters. Although the reaction products, which incorporate acyclic tetrasubstituted alkenes, are challenging substrates for asymmetric hydrogenation, trifluoroethanol (TFE) enabled rhodium-Walphos-catalyzed hydrogenation occurs with high levels of enantioselectivity. Thus, through successive transfer hydrogenative coupling-asymmetric hydrogenation events, abundant nitrile and acrylate feedstoc

Effects of sediment containing coal ash from the Kingston ash release on embryo-larval development in the fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas (Rafinesque, 1820).

The largest environmental release of coal ash in US history occurred in December 2008 with the failure of a retention structure at the Tennessee Valley Authority Kingston Fossil Fuel Plant in East Tennessee. A byproduct of coal-burning power plants, coal ash is enriched in metals and metalloids such as selenium and arsenic with known toxicity to fish embryonic and larval life stages. The early development of fish embryos and larvae during contact exposures to river bottom sediments containing up to 78 % coal ash from the Kingston spill was examined in 7-day laboratory tests with the fathead mi

Metal-rich lacustrine sediments from legacy mining perpetuate copper exposure to aquatic-riparian food webs.

Historic copper mining left a legacy of metal-rich tailings resulting in ecological impacts along and within Torch Lake, an area of concern in the Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan, USA. Given the toxicity of copper to invertebrates, this study assessed the influence of this legacy on present day nearshore aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. We measured the metal (Co, Cu, Ni, Zn, Cd) and metalloid (As) concentrations in sediment, pore water, surface water, larval and adult insects, and two riparian spider taxa collected from Torch Lake and a nearby reference lake. Overall, elevated metal and metall
