Intrasubject Radiographic Progression of Hallux Valgus Deformity in Patients With and Without Metatarsus Adductus: Bilateral Asymmetric Hallux Valgus Deformity.

This study was to analyze intrasubject radiographic progression of the hallux valgus deformity by comparing the mildly and severely affected sides in patients with bilateral asymmetric hallux valgus in the whole group as well as the metatarsus adductus and the nonmetatarsus adductus subgroups. A total of 186 patients with bilateral asymmetrical hallux valgus deformity with a difference of 5° or greater in the hallux valgus angle were included, and 11 radiographic measurements were analyzed. The radiographic differences between the mildly and severely affected sides were compared. Correlation b

Basal closing wedge osteotomy for correction of hallux valgus and metatarsus primus varus: 10- to 22-year follow-up.

Between 1974 and 1985, 59 patients (83 feet) underwent basal closing wedge osteotomy in combination with a bunionectomy and a lateral soft tissue release for correction of hallux valgus and metatarsus primus varus at this institution. Of the original 59 patients, 42 patients (60 feet) with at least 10 years of follow-up (average, 194 months; range, 144-266 months) were available for this study. Results were analyzed by review of the medical records and plain radiographs, a standardized clinical questionnaire, and physical examination. Of the 60 feet, patients rated outcomes as excellent or goo

Revolution or Evolution? The Treatment of Metatarsus Primus Varus with Hallux Valgus: My Experience with Modified Lapidus and Minimally Invasive Surgery.

Minimally invasive surgery has a high learning curve and multiple instructional courses and trainings should be completed by the surgeon prior to patient application. Modified Lapidus also is still a valid procedure selection in patients that may have concomitant medial column pain and/or dysfunction. Procedure selection is not "one-size fits all".

Bone regenerative medicine: metatarsus defects in sheep to evaluate new therapeutic strategies for human long bone defect. A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Large bone defects in long bone are not able to repair themselves and require grafts. Although autograft is the gold standard, it is associated with some disadvantages. Consequently, the application of tissue engineering (TE) techniques help with the use of allogenic biological and artificial scaffolds, cells and growth factors (GFs). Following 3Rs and in vitro testing strategies, animal models are required in preclinical in vivo studies to evaluate the therapeutic effects of the most promising TE techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review was performed from 2000 to

Correction of metatarsus primus varus associated with hallux valgus deformity using the arthrex mini tightrope: a report of 44 cases.

Metatarsus primus varus must be addressed during correction of moderate to severe hallux valgus deformity. As an alternative to proximal osteotomy or first tarsometatarsal fusion for hallux valgus correction, this study presents a series of patients treated using the Arthrex Mini TightRope. A total of 36 patients (44 operations) with hallux valgus and metatarsus primus varus underwent correction using the Arthrex Mini TightRope. Assessment included measurement of radiographic parameters, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) midfoot outcomes score, and the SF-12. The average

Biomechanics of the first ray. Part II: Metatarsus primus varus as a cause of hypermobility. A three-dimensional kinematic analysis in a cadaver model.

Variation in functional stability of the first metatarsocuneiform joint was analyzed between transverse plane deviated (adducted) and corrected first metatarsal positions in a closed kinetic chain model. Six fresh frozen cadaver specimens with intact ankles and feet were fitted with a custom fabricated titanium metatarsal jig, which allowed for manipulation of the first metatarsal in the transverse plane. Specimens were mounted into a custom-made acrylic load frame and axially loaded to 400 N. Radiowave three-dimensional tracking transducers were attached to the following osseous segments: fir

Aetiology and interrelationship of some common skeletal deformities. (Talipes equinovarus and calcaneovalgus, metatarsus varus, congenital dislocation of the hip, and infantile idiopathic scoliosis).

The Edinburgh Register of the Newborn 1964-1968 and the Edinburgh Scoliosis Clinic 1964-1971 have been used to establish the population frequency in the city of the idiopathic forms of talipes equinovarus and calcaneovalgus, metatarsus varus, congenital dislocation of the hip, and infantile scoliosis. A survey of 165 patients now aged 7 to 11 years showed an aetiological relationship, but with differing environmental factors. These factors were established by comparison with the Edinburgh Register control group of 692 normal infants born over the same period, giving a unique opportunity to obt

Rotational deformities of the tibia and foot in preterm infants.

Metatarsus adductus and medial tibial torsion are common in term infants. Our study shows that metatarsus adductus is rare, whereas medial tibial torsion does not occur in preterm infants with gestational ages of less than or equal to 30 weeks. These preterm infants have lateral rotation of the legs, external tibial rotation, and everted or normal feet at birth. This posture may explain the rarity of metatarsus adductus and medial tibial torsion in preterm infants.

FOREFOOT ADDUCTION IN CHILDREN. Management and Treatment.

Forefoot adduction is a common condition between metatarsus adductus, Z-shaped foot and residual clubfoot. This deformity is located in a pure transverse plane at Lisfranc’s joint. Isolated metatarsus adductus is corrected spontaneously for the majority of newborns. In rare uncorrected cases, it could result in Z-shaped foot with a functional hindfoot valgus to equilibrate the resistant metatarsus adductus. As well, in residual clubfoot, recurrent metatarsus adductus varus is observed, usually in children over three years. In flexible metatarsus adductus the treatment is conservative. The surg

Forefoot Adduction, Hindfoot Varus or Pes Cavus: Risk Factors for Fifth Metatarsal Fractures and Jones Fractures? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

The origin of fractures of the fifth metatarsus and Jones fracture is not clear. The goal of this study was to investigate the evidence of anatomical deformities such as metatarsus adductus, hindfoot varus, or pes cavus as risk factors for this pathology. A literature search of records related to the review question was performed screening PubMed/Medline, Embase and Cochrane library databases (last update: May 2020) according to PRISMA guidelines. A meta-analysis was performed using the mean difference of the assessed angles (in patients with the fractures vs controls) as outcome measure to su

Skewfoot (forefoot adduction with heel valgus).

Skewfoot, a malalignment of tarsal and metatarsal bones, is recognized clinically by forefoot adduction and heel valgus. Synonyms include S-shaped foot, serpentine foot, and Z-foot deformity. Skewfoot must be differentiated from metatarsus adductus, metatarsus varus, and metatarsus adductovarus. Only 50 cases have been reported, and only two primary articles have been published in the English literature. Four patients who were treated at the Mayo Clinic are described. The ages of the patients at the time of presentation ranged from 6 months to 3 years. Three patients underwent operation. Becau
