The degree of breath methane production in IBS correlates with the severity of constipation.

BACKGROUND: Recent work has demonstrated that among irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) subjects, methane on lactulose breath test (LBT) is nearly universally associated with constipation predominance. This work has been based on subjective constipation outcomes. In this study, methane is compared to constipation in another population of IBS subjects with constipation being determined both subjectively and objectively. METHODS: A nested study was conducted in subjects enrolled in a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled study. After consent, subjects were asked to complete a stool diary for 7

Direct VUV photolysis of chlorinated methanes and their mixtures in a nitrogen stream.

The gas-phase decomposition of CCl(4), CHCl(3) and CH(2)Cl(2) and their binary mixtures was studied in a flow-type reactor in a nitrogen gas stream, using a low-pressure mercury vapour lamp covered with a high-purity silica quartz sleeve. The 184.9 nm vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) light emitted is able to rupture the C-Cl bond in these target substances. For H-containing compounds, the decomposition takes place not only by direct photolysis, but also by H abstraction by .Cl formed during the direct photolysis of the target substances. The relative contributions of direct photolysis and .Cl-sensitiz

Attenuation of methane and volatile organic compounds in landfill soil covers.

The potential for natural attenuation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in landfill covers was investigated in soil microcosms incubated with methane and air, simulating the gas composition in landfill soil covers. Soil was sampled at Skellingsted Landfill at a location emitting methane. In total, 26 VOCs were investigated, including chlorinated methanes, ethanes, ethenes, fluorinated hydrocarbons, and aromatic hydrocarbons. The soil showed a high capacity for methane oxidation resulting in very high oxidation rates of between 24 and 112 microg CH4 g(-1) h(-1). All lower chlorinated compoun

A field evaluation of in situ biodegradation of trichloroethylene through methane injection.

A field study of biodegradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) through methane injection was conducted at the yard of a home in Japan. Methane was selected as the safest substrate for injection into groundwater. Methane, oxygen, nitrate, and phosphate were introduced into groundwater contaminated with 220 microg/L of TCE. After a week of biostimulation, methane concentrations gradually decreased below the detection limit. Methane oxidizing bacterial numbers increased from 10 to 10(4) cells/mL with methane consumptions. During methane injection. 10-20% of TCE removal was observed. The biotransforma

Significant sunlight-driven methane production at the wetland sediment-water interface.

Anthropogenic and natural wetlands are key contributors to global emissions of methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas influencing Earth's climate. Wetland CH4 emissions are typically attributed to anaerobic microbial respiration; however, biotic sources alone do not account for the full extent of CH4 emissions observed in wetlands, leaving a substantial gap in understanding wetland CH4 emission sources. Here, we reveal that abiotic sunlight-driven processes efficiently drive CH4 production in wetlands with shallow water table. This is facilitated by rapid photochemical reactive oxygen species

Charge-Directed Photothermal Methane Dry Reforming Enabled by Interfacial TiOx Nanodomains.

Photothermal dry reforming of methane (DRM) enables solar-driven upgrading of CH4 and CO2, yet its efficiency and durability are hindered by carbon deposition and poorly defined photochemical contributions. Here, we demonstrate a charge-directed photothermal DRM catalyst composed of Rh nanoparticles supported on TiOx-functionalized TiC, where interfacial TiOx domains play a critical role by coupling directional photocarrier flow with adaptive oxygen chemistry. Upon illumination, metallic TiC generates charge carriers that transfer electrons to Rh sites while steering holes to TiOx surface oxyg

Upland Methane Sinks Under Climate Change: Global Patterns, Drivers and Trends.

Well-aerated upland soils serve as a crucial biological sink for atmospheric methane (CH4), playing a key role in mitigating climate change. However, current understanding of how this CH4 sink responds to global climate change remains limited. To address this, we integrated 1092 observational data points to construct a dataset covering multiple global change factors and used meta-analysis to quantify the response mechanisms of the upland CH4 sink. Results show that warming, reduced precipitation, and elevated carbon dioxide concentrations significantly strengthened the CH4 sink, while increase

Intricate microbiome differences observed in lactating cows across methane intensity phenotypes.

Methane emissions from ruminants can be expressed through several metrics as total production, yield, or intensity, each reflecting distinct aspects of energy utilisation. Among these, methane intensity defined as grams of methane emitted per kilograms of energy-corrected milk, directly links emissions to productive efficiency; however, the microbial mechanisms underlying variation in this trait remain unclear. Here, we applied genome-resolved metagenomics and metatranscriptomics to characterise rumen microbial identity, functional potential, and transcriptional activity in lactating cows diff

Highly Selective Methane Photooxidation to Formaldehyde by Constructing Symmetry-Breaking Sites.

Solar-driven direct conversion of methane (CH4) and water to formaldehyde (HCHO) offers a sustainable route for hydrocarbon production under mild conditions. However, thermodynamic parallels between HCHO and methanol (CH3OH) formation limit product selectivity. Using titanium dioxide (TiO2), we have engineered symmetry-breaking sites to overcome this constraint. The studies reveal that symmetry-breaking sites generate surface hole-trapping states, enabling rapid hole migration (∼8 ps). This process combines with adsorbed hydroxyl groups to produce hydroxyl radicals (•OH), which cleave titanium

Terrestrial Organic Matter Inputs Modulate Methane Emissions from a Mega-Reservoir.

Reservoirs are hotspots for methane (CH4) emissions. However, to date, the effects of terrestrial organic matter (OM) input and degradation on CH4 emissions from large reservoirs remain largely unknown. From May 2020 to April 2021, we conducted monthly sampling campaigns at 100 sites in Lake Qiandao (580 km2), a mega-reservoir in China, and made monthly vertical profile observations from March to September 2023. We estimated an annual mean FCH4 flux of 0.26 g C m-2 yr-1 (1.51 × 108 g C yr-1). Elevated FCH4 and enriched δ13C-CH4 coincided with low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations, high leve

'Geophagy' and Clay Minerals: Influencing Ruminal Microbial Fermentation for Methane Mitigation.

Methane is a greenhouse gas with high warming potential, and ruminants like cattle and sheep are a major source of its emission. In the rumen, the first stomach compartment, diverse microorganisms and fauna live, including archaea, bacteria, protozoa, nematodes, and fungi. They participate in complex fermentation processes. During rumen fermentation, various gases are produced, dominantly hydrogen and carbon dioxide. In methanogenesis, methanogens utilize these two gases to produce methane as a byproduct, which burps out into the atmosphere. Therefore, interfering with this methanogenesis is a

CO2 Reforming of Methane over Ru Supported Catalysts Under Mild Conditions.

The CO2 (Dry) Reforming of Methane (DRM) is a key process for reducing CO2 and CH4 emissions while producing syngas with an H2/CO ratio of 1, ideal for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. This study explores DRM and the Reverse Water Gas Shift (RWGS) reaction under mild conditions using Ru-based catalysts supported on CeO2, YSZ, TiO2, and SiO2, with three reactant ratios: (i) stoichiometric, PCO2 = 1 kPa, PCH4 = 1 kPa, (ii) oxidizing, PCO2 = 2 kPa, PCH4 = 1 kPa, and (iii) reducing, PCO2 = 1 kPa, PCH4 = 4 kPa. The results highlight the importance of redox support for catalyst stability, with mobile latt

CO2 Capture-Mineralization for Calcium-Looping Integrated with Methane Dry Reforming.

Chemical absorption of carbon dioxide using monoethanolamine (MEA) is a well-established method for postcombustion CO2 capture. In this study, we aimed to integrate (1) the MEA-based CO2 capture with the regeneration of MEA using calcium-based mineralization, followed by (2) direct utilization of captured CO2 to form syngas via a calcium looping-based dry reforming of methane (CaL-DRM), an interfacial catalytic process. The results show that room-temperature CO2 capture-MEA regeneration was achievable by using calcium-based mineralization. The formed Ni-Ca material was shown to be active for c

Concentrated-solar catalytic methane dry reforming with ultrahigh conversion and durability.

Methane dry reforming not only utilizes two potent greenhouse gases of methane and carbon dioxide, but also provides a valuable feedstock for the production of chemicals. However, this process has been heavily hindered by high operating temperature and coke formation with catalyst deactivation over the last century. Herein, we propose an approach whereby concentrated-solar catalytic methane dry reforming addresses these longstanding issues. By leveraging focused light as the sole energy source and utilizing a well-designed catalyst, the catalyst with Ni-O4 coordination active center achieves h

Iron oxides semiconductor minerals photocatalysis reduce methane fluxes in paddy soils.

Dissimilatory iron reduction could reduce ecosystems methane (CH4) emissions. However, the role of iron oxides especially with photocatalysis in controlling CH4 emissions is still unclear. In this study, hematite, goethite, and ferrihydrite were added to paddy soil and a 30-day indoor incubation experiment was then carried out. Three distinct treatments of simulating full sunlight illumination with a xenon lamp light source, shielding light at a wavelength of 550 nm, and darkness were designed to comprehensively explore the impact of semiconductor minerals photocatalysis on CH4 emissions from

Continuous flow photosynthesis of methanol from methane by plasmonic charge accumulation.

Direct oxidation of methane (CH4) to methanol (CH3OH) typically requires elevated temperatures and pressures, making it challenging to achieve high yield and selectivity under mild conditions. Here, we show a surface plasmon-mediated catalyst designing strategy based on the synergy between Pd nanoparticles and ZnO nanosheets. When applied in a continuous gas-solid-liquid photocatalytic flow system at low temperature and ambient pressure, the optimized catalyst achieves a CH3OH productivity of 6584 μmol g-1 h-1, which is competitive with reported photocatalytic systems, along with selectivity o

Two-Stage Catalytic Conversion of Carbon Dioxide Into Aromatics Via Methane.

In the refinery of the future, the input shifts from crude oil to biomass, plastic, and CO2. Therefore, we need to find alternative routes to produce chemical building blocks, such as aromatics, which are used in products like, for example, fuels. In this study, we investigated a two-stage route to produce benzene from CO2. In two sequential reactions, CO2 is first converted into methane over a Ni/TiO2 catalyst, and methane is further reacted to yield benzene using a Mo/ZSM-5 catalyst via the methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) reaction. Through a combination of thermodynamic calculations and e

Polydopamine-Mediated Contact-Electro-Catalysis for Efficient Partial Oxidation of Methane.

The direct conversion and efficient utilization of methane pose a critical scientific challenge. Indirect activation via reactive oxygen species (ROS) offers a high probability of contact with methane and conversion efficiency under mild conditions. However, reported product yields are suboptimal due to challenges in activating oxygen and facilitating mass transfer in suspension systems. We propose the use of contact-electro-catalysis (CEC), employing polydopamine (PDA) as a catalyst that undergoes electron transfer with oxygen under ultrasound, generating ROS that drives the partial oxidation

Direct HCN synthesis via plasma-assisted conversion of methane and nitrogen.

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is synthesized from ammonia (NH3) and methane (CH4) at ~1200°C over a Pt catalyst. Ammonia synthesis entails several complex, highly emitting processes. Plasma-assisted HCN synthesis directly from CH4 and nitrogen (N2) could be pivotal for on-demand HCN production. Here, we evaluate the potential of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) N2/CH4 plasma for decentralized catalyst-free selective HCN production. We demonstrate a single-step conversion of methane and nitrogen to HCN with a 72% yield at <300°C. HCN is favored at low CH4 concentrations with ethane (C2H6) as the sec
