MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-protein-coding RNAs that negatively regulate gene expression. They bind to the 3'-untranslated region of specific mRNAs and inhibit translation or promote mRNA degradation. Dyslipidemia/hyperlipidemia is a well-accepted risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis. The pathogenesis factors involved in lipid abnormalities are being examined extensively, and there is emerging evidence linking miRNAs to lipid metabolism. Among them, recent studies, including ours, have demonstrated that miRNAs control the expression of genes associated with high-density lipo

The first step in the biogenesis of microRNAs is the processing of primary microRNAs (pri-miRNAs) by the microprocessor complex, composed of the RNA-binding protein DGCR8 and the type III RNase DROSHA. This initial event requires recognition of the junction between the stem and the flanking single-stranded RNA of the pri-miRNA hairpin by DGCR8 followed by recruitment of DROSHA, which cleaves the RNA duplex to yield the pre-miRNA product. While the mechanisms underlying pri-miRNA processing have been determined, the mechanism by which DGCR8 recognizes and binds pri-miRNAs, as opposed to other s

Colorectal cancer is a common tumor in Japan, causing almost 50,000 deaths per year. The development of new biomarkers is strongly desired, in order to detect the early stage of colorectal cancer with high sensitivity and specificity, using less invasive and high through-put methods. miRNA is a small non-coding RNA which regulates gene expression by digesting mRNA or suppressing translation. miRNAs are stable and present in blood, urine, stool, and other body fluids. The profiles of miRNAs in body fluid are specific to pathological states. There is accumulating data showing the usefulness of m

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of noncoding RNAs that mainly negatively regulate gene expression. miRNAs have important roles in many diseases, including inflammatory diseases. Gout is a common arthritis caused by deposition of monosodium urate crystals within joints. Recent studies suggested that miRNAs may be involved in the development of inflammatory arthritis, including acute gouty arthritis. In the present review, we systemically discuss relevant publications in order to provide a better understanding on the possible role of miRNAs in gout. miRNAs may act as regulators of gout pathogenes

The genus Enterovirus, a member of the Picornavirus family, are RNA viruses that can cause poliomyelitis, hand-food-mouth disease, viral meningitis or meningoencephalitis, viral myocarditis and so on. MicroRNAs are a class of highly conserved, small noncoding RNAs recognized as important regulators of gene expression. Recent studies found that MicroRNAs play a significant role in the infection of Enterovirus, such as enterovirus 71, coxsackievirus B3 and other Enterovirus. Enteroviral infection can alter the expression of cellular MicroRNAs, and cellular MicroRNAs can modulate viral pathogenes

Schistosomes, a class of parasitic trematode worms, cause schistosomiasis. Accumulating evidence suggests that microRNAs (miRNAs)-small, non-coding RNAs that are known to play critical regulatory roles in many organisms-may be involved in schistosome development and sexual maturation, as well as the pathogenesis of schistosomiasis. Schistosoma miRNAs, such as Bantam and miR-10, may be involved in the pathological processes of schistosomiasis, and recent studies suggest that schistosome-specific miRNAs (e.g., Bantam, miR-3479-3p) in the bloodstream of a final host could be used as biomarkers fo

Skeletal muscle comprises approximately 40% of body weight, and is important for locomotion, as well as for metabolic homeostasis. Adult skeletal muscle mass is maintained by a fine balance between muscle protein synthesis and degradation. In response to cytokines, nutrients, and mechanical stimuli, skeletal muscle mass is increased (hypertrophy), whereas skeletal muscle mass is decreased (atrophy) in a variety of conditions, including cancer cachexia, starvation, immobilization, aging, and neuromuscular disorders. Recent studies have determined two important signaling pathways involved in ske

MicroRNAs are short noncoding RNAs, known regulators of several signaling pathways cell differentiation and proliferation, development, and apoptosis, which are deregulated in acute leukemia. Mixed lineage leukemia (MLL) gene encodes a protein with histone methyltransferase activity, which is essential for the fine tuning of hematopoietic stem cell development and differentiation through the regulation of HOXA and MEIS1. MLL gene rearrangements characterize both acute myeloid and acute lymphoblastic leukemia associated with poor outcomes. MicroRNAs and MLL rearrangements are in tight associati

Non-coding microRNAs (miRNAs) have a fundamental role in gene regulation and expression in almost every multicellular organism. Only discovered in the last decade, miRNAs are already known to play a leading role in many aspects of disease. In the vertebrate inner ear, miRNAs are essential for controlling development and survival of hair cells. Moreover, dysregulation of miRNAs has been implicated in sensorineural hearing impairment, as well as in other ear diseases such as cholesteatomas, vestibular schwannomas, and otitis media. Due to the inaccessibility of the ear in humans, animal models h

Fibrotic skin disorders may be debilitating and impair quality of life. There are few effective treatment options for cutaneous fibrotic diseases. In this review, we discuss our current understanding of the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in skin fibrosis. miRNAs are a class of small, non-coding RNAs involved in skin fibrosis. These small RNAs range from 18 to 25 nucleotides in length and modify gene expression by binding to target messenger RNA (mRNA), causing degradation of the target mRNA or inhibiting the translation into proteins. We present an overview of the biogenesis, maturation and functi

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short non-coding RNAs involved in the regulation of gene expression at the post-transcriptional level that have been involved in the pathogenesis of a number of cardiovascular diseases. Several miRNAs have been described to finely regulate lipid metabolism and the progression and regression of atherosclerosis including, miR-33, miR-122. Of note miR-33a and -33b, represent one of the most interesting and attractive targets for metabolic-related disorders and anti-miR-33 approaches are under intensive investigation. More recently miRNAs were shown to exert their activities

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small (approx. 22 nt) noncoding RNAs that are capable of post-transcriptionally silencing mRNAs that contain sequences complementary to the miRNAs' 7- to 8-bp 'seed' sequence. As single miRNAs are often predicted to target up to hundreds of individual transcripts, miRNAs are able to broadly affect the overall protein expression state of the cell. This can translate into global effects on cellular health and differentiation state. Recently, several reports have identified crucial roles for miRNAs in controlling the production, differentiation, and health of mye

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small RNAs comprised of 20-25 nucleotides that regulates gene expression by inducing translational repression or degradation of target mRNA. The importance of miRNAs as a mediator of disease pathogenesis and therapeutic targets is rapidly emerging in neuroscience, as well as oncology, immunology, and cardiovascular diseases. In Parkinson's disease and related disorders, multiple studies have identified the implications of specific miRNAs and the polymorphisms of miRNA target genes during the disease pathogenesis. With a focus on Parkinson's disease, spinocerebellar ataxi

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) pathogenesis is still partially unexplained. We investigate the importance of microRNA (miRNA) expression as an additional feature that influences MCL pathway deregulation and may be useful for predicting patient outcome. Twenty-three MCL samples, eight cell lines and appropriate controls were screened for their miRNAs and gene expression profiles and DNA copy-number changes. MCL patients exhibit a characteristic signature that includes 117 miRNA (false discovery rate <0.05). Combined analysis of miRNAs and the gene expression profile, paired with bioinformatics targ

There is an ongoing explosion of information about microRNAs (miRs) in cardiac disease. These small noncoding RNAs regulate protein expression by destabilization and translational inhibition of target mRNAs. Similar to mRNAs, miRs are regulated in cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure, but miR expression profiles appear to be more sensitive than mRNA signatures to changes in clinical status, suggesting that miR levels in myocardium or plasma could enhance clinical diagnostics. Single miRs can target dozens or hundreds of different mRNAs, complicating attempts to determine their individual phys

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short noncoding RNA molecules that can regulate gene expression via affecting mRNA stability or translation efficiency. miRNAs mediate many important cellular processes and emerge as a newly discovered regulator of gene expression. In cardiac hypertrophy, miRNAs expression is aberrantly altered. Some of these miRNAs can promote cardiac hypertrophy, whereas others can inhibit the process. In this review, we summarize the up- and downregulated miRNAs during cardiac hypertrophy and discuss about their roles in cardiac hypertrophy. The studies on miRNAs shed new light on the

Human herpesviruses have latency and lytic replication phases in their lifecycle. Proper regulation of herpesviral lifecycle is essential for the evasion of host immune surveillance and development of their related diseases. Recent advancements indicate a role of a novel class of viral non-coding RNAs, microRNA (miRNA), in the fine-tuning of herpesviral lifecycle. So far, herpesviral miRNAs appear to promote viral latency by inhibiting viral lytic replication either through direct targeting of key viral replication genes or through manipulation of host pathways that regulate viral lifecycle.
