Effects of two surfactants on microbial diversity of a PCE-degrading microbial consortium.

The effects of two representative surfactants, Rhamnolipids and Tween 80, on the microbial diversity of a PCE-degrading consortium during surfactant-enhanced biodegradation, were explored. The biodegradation efficiency was increased from 47.25% to 73.44%, and 47.25%-66.69%, with the addition of Rhamnolipid at 10 mg/L and Tween 80 at 50 mg/L, respectively. PCE biodegradation kinetics can be described by the pseudo-first-order reaction model for both scenarios. Analyses of alpha and beta indices of the microbial consortium showed that the microbial diversity of both groups exposed to either surf

Characterization of the biodegradation, bioremediation and detoxification capacity of a bacterial consortium able to degrade the fungicide thiabendazole.

Thiabendazole (TBZ) is a persistent fungicide used in the post-harvest treatment of fruits. Its application results in the production of contaminated effluents which should be treated before their environmental discharge. In the absence of efficient treatment methods in place, biological systems based on microbial inocula with specialized degrading capacities against TBZ could be a feasible treatment approach. Only recently the first bacterial consortium able to rapidly transform TBZ was isolated. This study aimed to characterize its biodegradation, bioremediation and detoxification potential.

Metagenomic analysis of a desulphurisation system used to treat biogas from vinasse methanisation.

We investigated the response of microbial community to changes in H2S loading rate in a microaerated desulphurisation system treating biogas from vinasse methanisation. H2S removal efficiency was high, and both COD and DO seemed to be important parameters to biomass activity. DGGE analysis retrieved sequences of sulphide-oxidising bacteria (SOB), such as Thioalkalimicrobium sp. Deep sequencing analysis revealed that the microbial community was complex and remained constant throughout the experiment. Most sequences belonged to Firmicutes and Proteobacteria, and, to a lesser extent, Bacteroidete

Comprehensive multi-omics analysis of secondary distillate from fermented Huangjiu residue: Insights into flavor formation and microbial dynamics.

Huangjiu residue distillate, or Zaoshao, is a traditional Chinese liquor produced from the fermentation and distillation of Huangjiu lees. This study investigates the fermentation mechanisms and flavor formation of secondary Zaoshao, derived from the second round of Huangjiu lees fermentation, using flavoromics, amino acid and organic acid profiling, and metagenomics. Flavoromics identified ethyl octanoate, ethyl decanoate, ethyl dodecanoate, ethyl hexadecanoate, and ethyl (Z)-octadec-9-enoate as key flavor compounds. Amino acid and organic acid profiling showed continuous increases in amino a

Pseudomonadaceae Promotes Tobacco Defense Against Pathogen Invasion via Root Exudate Reprogramming.

Microbial pathogens pose a serious challenge to food security under climate change. Microbiomes can filter out incoming pathogens. However, the specific microbial taxa and mechanisms that indicate the response of the microbiome and plant health to the invasion of pathogens remain largely unknown. Here, we combine multiple field surveys and experiments with DNA and RNA sequencing using tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and the bacterial wilt pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum as the model system, and f ind that Pseudomonadaceae constitute an important root-associated component against pathogen invasions

Efficient biodegradation and upcycling of polyethylene terephthalate mediated by cell-factories.

The pervasive accumulation of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste has emerged as a critical ecological crisis, which is mainly driven by its recalcitrance to natural degradation and widespread contamination of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. In response to this challenge, microbial-mediated PET biodegradation has garnered significant scientific attentions as a sustainable remediation strategy, harnessing the enzymatic cascades of specialized microorganisms to depolymerize PET into bio-assimilable monomers such as terephthalic acid (TPA) and ethylene glycol (EG). In this review, we summa

Bridging research gaps and advancing policy for healthy soils.

The policy framework previously presented by Neale and colleagues in Sustainable Microbiology highlights the central role of soil microorganisms in sustainable agriculture and global food security, offering actionable interventions grounded in emerging scientific advances. However, the translation of soil science and ecology into impactful policy and practice remains limited. This opinion article revisits the longstanding concept of soil biotechnology, and regulatory/societal barriers to progress. We emphasize that the soil microbiome holds untapped potential for improving plant health, reduci

Exploring and defining concepts of microbiome stewardship for the indoor built environment.

Microbiome stewardship (MS) aims to maintain microbiome diversity and functioning to support human and ecosystem health. However, the built environment presents a unique challenge, as human-made indoor spaces lack a native microbial baseline. This review addresses this challenge and proposes a framework for MS for the built environment that bridges indoor exposure science with socio-ecological, engineering, and policy insights. We consider indoor spaces as active exposure ecologies shaped by ventilation, filtration, and moisture control. While mitigating harmful pollutants, dampness-related mi

Biodegradation of ciprofloxacin using machine learning tools: Kinetics and modelling.

Recently, the rampant administration of antibiotics and their synthetic organic constitutes have exacerbated adverse effects on ecosystems, affecting the health of animals, plants, and humans by promoting the emergence of extreme multidrug-resistant bacteria (XDR), antibiotic resistance bacterial variants (ARB), and genes (ARGs). The constraints, such as high costs, by-product formation, etc., associated with the physico-chemical treatment process limit their efficacy in achieving efficient wastewater remediation. Biodegradation is a cost-effective, energy-saving, sustainable alternative for r

Environmental factor driven microbial interactions regulate flavor metabolisms in polymicrobial fermented alcoholic beverages: A dynamic coupling framework.

Fermented alcoholic beverages are globally cherished for their diverse sensory profiles, shaped by complex microbial metabolism. Environmentally-driven microbial interactions play a significant role in regulating the synthesis of flavor metabolites. However, mechanisms linking environmental factors to microbial interactions and flavor formation are unclear, hindering the optimization of fermented alcoholic beverages. This work systematically discussed regulatory mechanisms by which microbial interactions govern flavor formation in environment-driven polymicrobial fermentation processes of alco

Recent advances and challenges in mechanistic modelling of photosynthetic processes for wastewater treatment.

Phototrophy-based wastewater treatment has the potential to reduce wastewater bioremediation costs, improving environmental impacts and allowing for enhanced resource recovery. Microbial interactions occurring in phototrophic-chemotrophic consortia treating wastewater are particularly complex, and with varying impact on each microbial clade by different chemical, biological and physical factors, including light-related aspects. For this reason, mechanistic mathematical modelling of these systems is challenging, and the resulting models are especially complex. The present study focuses particul

Anaerobic metabolic responses of sludge and mine wastewater-derived consortia to winery wastewater-related compounds.

Winery wastewater contains readily biodegradable organic matter, but some of its components can inhibit anaerobic microbial activity. This study compares two enriched microbial consortia, derived from anaerobic digester sludge (ADS) and mining-process wastewater (MPW), exposed to alcohols, carboxylic acids, and phenolics. Assays were conducted in acetate-fumarate-based media containing low or high concentrations of each compound class and a combined condition containing the compounds at their highest levels. Growth, fumarate consumption, succinate production, acetate turnover, and compound con

Stress and stability: applying the Anna Karenina principle to animal microbiomes.

All animals studied to date are associated with symbiotic communities of microorganisms. These animal microbiotas often play important roles in normal physiological function and susceptibility to disease; predicting their responses to perturbation represents an essential challenge for microbiology. Most studies of microbiome dynamics test for patterns in which perturbation shifts animal microbiomes from a healthy to a dysbiotic stable state. Here, we consider a complementary alternative: that the microbiological changes induced by many perturbations are stochastic, and therefore lead to transi
