Growth, detection and virulence of Listeria monocytogenes in the presence of other microorganisms: microbial interactions from species to strain level.

Like with all food microorganisms, many basic aspects of L. monocytogenes life are likely to be influenced by its interactions with bacteria living in close proximity. This pathogenic bacterium is a major concern both for the food industry and health organizations since it is ubiquitous and able to withstand harsh environmental conditions. Due to the ubiquity of Listeria monocytogenes, various strains may contaminate foods at different stages of the supply chain. Consequently, simultaneous exposure of consumers to multiple strains is also possible. In this context even strain-to-strain interac

Hydrogen sulfide mediates the interaction between C. elegans and Actinobacteria from its natural microbial environment.

Caenorhabditis elegans proliferates poorly in the presence of abundant Actinobacteria from its natural ecology, but it is unknown why. Here, we show how perturbed levels of hydrogen sulfide modulate the growth rate of both C. elegans and Actinobacteria. From a forward genetic selection, we find C. elegans mutants with faster growth on an Actinobacteria Microbacterium species and mutant alleles of conserved cystathionine gamma-lyase (cth-2/CTH) that improve growth rate. Conversely, null alleles of cth-2 cause developmental arrest of animals grown on Actinobacteria, but not on Proteobacteria, wh

Insights into microbial interactive mechanism regulating dissimilatory nitrate reduction processes in riparian freshwater aquaculture sediments.

Aquaculture can substantially alter the accumulation and cycling of nutrients in sediments. However, the microbial mechanisms mediating sediment dissimilatory nitrate (NO3-) reduction in freshwater aquaculture ponds are still unclear, which rule the removal and retention of N element. In the present study, three microbial NO3- reduction processes in riparian aquaculture pond sediments (i.e., crab, shrimp and fish ponds) and natural freshwater sediments (i.e., lakes and rivers) were investigated via isotopic tracing and molecular analyses. The potential rates of denitrification, anaerobic ammon

Establishing causality in Salmonella-microbiota-host interaction: The use of gnotobiotic mouse models and synthetic microbial communities.

Colonization resistance (CR), the ability to block infections by potentially harmful microbes, is a fundamental function of host-associated microbial communities and highly conserved between animals and humans. Environmental factors such as antibiotics and diet can disturb microbial community composition and thereby predispose to opportunistic infections. The most prominent is Clostridioides difficile, the causative agent of diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis. In addition, the risk to succumb to infections with genuine human enteric pathogens like nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) is also incre

Enhancing humification and microbial interactions during co-composting of pig manure and wine grape pomace: The role of biochar and Fe2O3.

Phenol-rich wine grape pomace (WGP) improves the conversion of pig manure (PM) into humic acid (HA) during composting. However, the impact of using combinations of Fe2O3 and biochar known to promote compost maturation remains uncertain. This research explored the individual and combined influence of biochar and Fe2O3 during the co-composting of PM and WGP. The findings revealed that Fe2O3 boosts microbial network symbiosis (3233 links), augments the HA yield to 3.38 by promoting polysaccharide C-O stretching, and improves the germination index to 124.82 %. Limited microbial interactions, incre

Copper nanowires as nanofertilizers for alfalfa plants: Understanding nano-bio systems interactions from microbial genomics, plant molecular responses and spectroscopic studies.

The recent application of nano copper (Cu) compounds in the agrosystem has shown potential to improve the physiological performance and agronomical parameters of crops. We grew alfalfa (Medicago sativa) in potting mix amended with bulk, nano, and ionic Cu compounds at 80 and 280 mg Cu/kg; then, we evaluated plant performance at physiological and molecular levels. Plants treated with bulk/nano Cu presented better agronomical responses. The P and S content was reduced in bulk and ionic Cu-exposed plants, compared to controls (p ≤ .05). All Cu forms increased the content of Fe and Zn in roots and

Biotic interactions and sunlight affect persistence of fecal indicator bacteria and microbial source tracking genetic markers in the upper Mississippi river.

The sanitary quality of recreational waters that may be impacted by sewage is assessed by enumerating fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) (Escherichia coli and enterococci); these organisms are found in the gastrointestinal tracts of humans and many other animals, and hence their presence provides no information about the pollution source. Microbial source tracking (MST) methods can discriminate between different pollution sources, providing critical information to water quality managers, but relatively little is known about factors influencing the decay of FIB and MST genetic markers following rel

Shotgun metagenomic composition, microbial interactions and functional insights into the uterine microbiome of postpartum dairy cows with clinical and subclinical endometritis.

Clinical endometritis (CE) is associated with bacterial pathogens while the same has not been proved about subclinical endometritis (SCE). We aimed to use shotgun metagenomic sequencing to investigate the associations between potentially unidentified pathogens and SCE. Uterine cytobrush samples from multiparous Holstein cows (n = 23) were taken at 21 days in milk (DIM) and sequenced via the Illumina shotgun platform. At 36 DIM, the cows were diagnosed as CE (n = 7), SCE (n = 7), or healthy (n = 9). We did not find differences in the alpha and beta diversity of bacteria and eukaryotes among the

Identifying stationary microbial interaction networks based on irregularly spaced longitudinal 16S rRNA gene sequencing data.

INTRODUCTION: The microbial interactions within the human microbiome are complex, and few methods are available to identify these interactions within a longitudinal microbial abundance framework. Existing methods typically impose restrictive constraints, such as requiring long sequences and equal spacing, on the data format which in many cases are violated. METHODS: To identify microbial interaction networks (MINs) with general longitudinal data settings, we propose a stationary Gaussian graphical model (SGGM) based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing data. In the SGGM, data can be arbitrarily spaced

Microbial interaction: Prevotella spp. reduce P. aeruginosa induced inflammation in cystic fibrosis bronchial epithelial cells.

BACKGROUND: In Cystic Fibrosis (CF) airways, the dehydrated, thick mucus promotes the establishment of persistent polymicrobial infections and drives chronic airways inflammation. This also predisposes the airways to further infections, the vicious, self-perpetuating cycle causing lung damage and progressive lung function decline. The airways are a poly-microbial environment, containing both aerobic and anaerobic bacterial species. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) infections contribute to the excessive inflammatory response in CF, but the role of anaerobic Prevotella spp., frequently fou

Studying Microbial Communities In Vivo: A Model of Host-mediated Interaction Between Candida Albicans and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa in the Airways.

Studying host-pathogen interaction enables us to understand the underlying mechanisms of the pathogenicity during microbial infection. The prognosis of the host depends on the involvement of an adapted immune response against the pathogen. Immune response is complex and results from interaction of the pathogens and several immune or non-immune cellular types. In vitro studies cannot characterise these interactions and focus on cell-pathogen interactions. Moreover, in the airway, particularly in patients with suppurative chronic lung disease or in mechanically ventilated patients, polymicrobial

The interaction between litter input and soil microbial community regulates the intraspecific allelopathic effects of Solanum rostratum Dunal.

INTRODUCTION: The "novel weapon hypothesis" posits that invasive plants suppress native species by releasing allelochemicals, which is a crucial factor for their successful invasion. While most studies focus on interspecific allelopathy, with insufficient attention paid to intraspecific allelopathy. METHODS: This study employed an in pot experiment with different litter concentrations (0, 5, 10, 20 g/kg) to cultivate Solanum rostratum Dunal seedlings in both sterilized and unsterilized soils. Association of aberrant brain network dynamics with gut microbial composition uncovers disrupted brain-gut-microbiome interactions in irritable bowel syndrome: Preliminary findings.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Growing evidence suggests that abnormalities in brain-gut-microbiome (BGM) interactions are involved in the pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Our study aimed to explore alterations in dynamic functional connectivity (DFC), the gut microbiome and the bidirectional interaction in the BGM. METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI), fecal samples and clinical chacteristics were collected from 33 IBS patients and 32 healthy controls. We performed a systematic DFC analysis on rs-fMRI. The gut microbiome was analyzed by 16S rRNA gene

Optimizing nitrogen fertilization in maize: the impact of nitrification inhibitors, phosphorus application, and microbial interactions on enhancing nutrient efficiency and crop performance.

Despite the essential role of nitrogen fertilizers in achieving high crop yields, current application practices often exhibit low efficiency. Optimizing nitrogen (N) fertilization in agriculture is, therefore, critical for enhancing crop productivity while ensuring sustainable food production. This study investigates the effects of nitrification inhibitors (Nis) such as Dimethyl Pyrazole Phosphate (DMPP) and Dimethyl Pyrazole Fulvic Acid (DMPFA), plant growth-promoting bacteria inoculation, and phosphorus (P) application on the soil-plant-microbe system in maize. DMPFA is an organic nitrificat

Biofilm ecology associated with dental caries: understanding of microbial interactions in oral communities leads to development of therapeutic strategies targeting cariogenic biofilms.

A biofilm is a sessile community characterized by cells attached to the surface and organized into a complex structural arrangement. Dental caries is a biofilm-dependent oral disease caused by infection with cariogenic pathogens, such as Streptococcus mutans, and associated with frequent exposure to a sugar-rich diet and poor oral hygiene. The virulence of cariogenic biofilms is often associated with the spatial organization of S. mutans enmeshed with exopolysaccharides on tooth surfaces. However, in the oral cavity, S. mutans does not act alone, and several other microbes contribute to cariog

Rumen microbial responses to supplemental nitrate. II. Potential interactions with live yeast culture on the prokaryotic community and methanogenesis in continuous culture.

Nitrates have been fed to ruminants, including dairy cows, as an electron sink to mitigate CH4 emissions. In the NO3- reduction process, NO2- can accumulate, which could directly inhibit methanogens and possibly other microbes in the rumen. Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast was hypothesized to decrease NO2- through direct reduction or indirectly by stimulating the bacterium Selenomonas ruminantium, which is among the ruminal bacteria most well characterized to reduce both NO3- and NO2-. Ruminal fluid was incubated in continuous cultures fed diets without or with NaNO3 (1.5% of diet dry matter; i.
