Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most important bacterial pathogens in clinical practice and a major diagnostic focus for the routine microbiology laboratory. It is carried as a harmless commensal in up to two-thirds of the population at any one time predominantly not only in the anterior nares, but also in multiple other sites such as the groin, axilla, throat, perineum, vagina and rectum. It colonizes skin breach sites, such as ulcers and wounds, and causes superficial and deep skin and soft tissue infections and life-threatening deep seated infections particularly endocarditis and osteom

Bronchiectasis is a disorder of persistent lung inflammation and recurrent infection, defined by a common pathological end point: irreversible bronchial dilatation arrived at through diverse etiologies. This suggests an interplay between immunogenetic susceptibility, immune dysregulation, bacterial infection, and lung damage. The damaged epithelium impairs mucus removal and facilitates bacterial infection with increased cough, sputum production, and airflow obstruction. Lung infection is caused by respiratory bacterial and fungal pathogens, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Haemophilus, Asperg

Melioidosis is a potentially fatal infection caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei Clinical diagnosis of melioidosis can be challenging since there is no pathognomonic clinical syndrome, and the organism is often misidentified by methods used routinely in clinical laboratories. Although the disease is more prevalent in Thailand and northern Australia, sporadic cases may be encountered in areas where it is not endemic, including the United States. Since the organism is considered a tier 1 select agent according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Departmen

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the presence and nature of bacterial flora on hearing aids and the ears of this population. We wonder if the microbiology of the ears with hearing aid wearing differs from the other ear.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
DESIGN: A prospective, clinical study.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Three samples were taken, one from the surface of the hearing aid's ear mold; one from the hearing aid-wearing ear canal and the last one from the ear without hearing aid. Samples were cultured to determine qualitatively and quantitatively the pathogenic microorga

OBJECTIVE: The microbiology and epidemiology of UTI pathogens are largely unknown in Botswana, a high prevalence HIV setting. Using laboratory data from the largest referral hospital and a private hospital, we describe the major pathogens causing UTI and their antimicrobial resistance patterns.
METHODS: This retrospective study examined antimicrobial susceptibility data for urine samples collected at Princess Marina Hospital (PMH), Bokamoso Private Hospital (BPH), or one of their affiliated outpatient clinics. A urine sample was included in our dataset if it demonstrated pure growth of a sing

The outcome of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) depends on the interaction between the infectious agent and the host response. Nowadays the etiology of CAP can be established in ~60% of the cases, and Streptococcus pneumoniae remains the main etiological agent in outpatients, those hospitalized, or those requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Recently, the development of nucleic acid amplification techniques has emphasized the role of viruses as important etiological agents in CAP. However, some demographic factors and comorbidities will determine a higher risk of pneumonia. Thus eld

Ceftaroline fosamil, the prodrug form of ceftaroline, is a novel broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin that exhibits antibacterial activity against typical respiratory pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus and common Gram-negative pathogens. In particular, ceftaroline has activity against resistant Gram-positive cocci, including penicillin- and multidrug-resistant S. pneumoniae, as well as methicillin-resistant S. aureus. The activity of ceftaroline against these phenotypes is attributed to its ability to bind to modified penicillin-binding

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study is to document the common bacteria found in the smegma in the subpreputial space of asymptomatic boys in our environment, their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern, and to determine if they differ from those commonly isolated from children with established urinary tract infections in our sub-region.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between May 2009 and January 2010, smegma swabs were collected from asymptomatic boys who presented for circumcision in our institution. This was done using aseptic techniques in the theatre, following retraction of the prepuce. The s

UNLABELLED: There isn't definitive and consistent data concerning the distribution of bacterial species in patients with Chronic Sinusitis (CS). The variability of the results from studies in CS may be due to the different techniques used as collection method, variations in culture methods, previous antibiotic use, and difficulty in distinguishing bacterial flora from pathogenic agents.
STUDY DESIGN: Clinical prospective.
AIM: To identify the incidence of microorganisms in patients with CRS by growing bacteria from the secretion of the maxillary sinus.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infection (SSI) rates complicating breast surgery have ranged from 1-26%, but limited data have been provided regarding pathogen identification and in vitro susceptibility results. The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of bacterial cultures of breast SSI sites and antibiotic susceptibility testing to determine the clinical utility of these findings.
STUDY DESIGN: Medical records were reviewed for SSI in patients who had undergone breast/axillary surgical procedures between June 2003 and June 2006. An SSI was defined by the criteria of the U.S. Centers for

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) is a life-threatening complication of pharyngeal or dental infections. The aim of this paper was to investigate whether dental or pharyngeal source result from different pathogen(s) in CNF and whether antibiotics, given before admission, influence the antimicrobial resistance of pathogens. In 152 CNF patients, Streptococcus milleri group and Prevotella species were the predominant isolates, frequently copathogens, mostly in dental CNF samples. Penicillin and clindamycin resistance were observed in 39% and 37% of cases, respectively, independently of any pre

Community-acquired pneumonia, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, and acute sinusitis are among the most common bacterial infections encountered in clinical practice. Pathogens frequently associated with these infections include Streptococcus pneumoniae, Hemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Legionella pneumophila, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Unfortunately, resistance to antimicrobials commonly used for the treatment of these infections is increasing, limiting the clinical efficacy of these agents. Fluoroquinolones offer several advantages over other classes

Pneumonia complicates hospitalization in 0.5 to 2.0% of patients and is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. Risk factors for hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) include mechanical ventilation for > 48 h, residence in an ICU, duration of ICU or hospital stay, severity of underlying illness, and presence of comorbidities. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterobacter are the most common causes of HAP. Nearly half of HAP cases are polymicrobial. In patients receiving mechanical ventilation, P aeruginosa, Acinetobacter, methicillin-resistant S aureus, and other an

A retrospective review of the microbiological and clinical data of 17 specimens obtained from axillary hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) over a period of 6 years was undertaken to study the aerobic and anaerobic microbiology of this condition. A total of 42 bacterial isolates (2.5 per specimen) were obtained, 12 aerobic or facultative (0.7 per specimen) and 30 anaerobic or micro-aerophilic (1.8 per specimen). Aerobic and facultative bacteria only were isolated in six (35%) cases, anaerobic bacteria only in seven (41%) and mixed aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in four (24%). The predominant aerobic

Near patient testing (NPT) was the norm in days when urine was examined by smell and taste. More recently, general practitioners and physicians in genitourinary medicine began to use light microscopes in their consulting rooms to examine urine for pus cells and urethral and other swabs for pathogens. Increasing knowledge has led to specialisation, however, with clinicians obtaining specimens for examination by others. Improved technology has speeded up the practice of medicine, raising expectations of patients and doctors alike, and reductions in the size and expense of testing instruments hav

Neisseria meningitidis (meningococcus) is responsible for an average of 40% of all cases of bacterial meningitis in Germany. Cerebrospinal fluids, blood cultures, throat swabs and scratches, aspirations and biopsies of the skin rash are appropriate materials for the diagnosis of meningococcal disease. The materials should reach the laboratory without delay. Since 1993, the incidence of meningococcal disease in Germany is less than 1 case per 100,000 inhabitants. The case fatality rate is about 10%. Most cases of meningococcal disease occur in the first quarter of the year. Almost half of all i

Chronic paranasal sinusitis is a disease that afflicts a significant percentage of the population and causes considerable long-term morbidity. With the common use of multiple courses of broad-spectrum oral antibiotics to treat this condition, there is a possibility of an alteration in the pathogens that promote a persistence of chronic sinusitis. One hundred seventy-four consecutive patients with a diagnosis of chronic maxillary sinusitis requiring an endoscopic surgical procedure were prospectively evaluated. At the time of surgery, cultures of mucopus in the maxillary sinus were aseptically
