Risk factors for hemorrhage during microelectrode-guided deep brain stimulator implantation for movement disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Although hemorrhage is a well-known complication of microelectrode-guided deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery, risk factors for the development of hemorrhage have not been well defined. We analyzed the risk factors for symptomatic and asymptomatic hemorrhage in a large series of DBS implantations into the subthalamic nucleus, ventrolateral thalamus, and internal globus pallidus. METHODS: All DBS procedures performed by a single surgeon at our institution between June 1998 and May 2004 were included in this study. All patients had postoperative imaging (magnetic resonance imaging o

Rhythmic afterpotentials in relation to pre-stimulus barbiturate spindle-like activity. Macro- and microelectrode investigations.

It was proposed that the two types of rhythmic afterreactions (RARs) in the somatosensory cortex following forepaw electrical stimulation, i.e. the classical rhythmic afterpotential (RAP) with monophasic waves progressively decreasing in amplitude and the spindle-like afterpotential (SRAP) composed of waxing and waning phase like the spontaneous spindle (SS) were different electrocortical evoked rhythms. The hypothesis that not the RAP, but the SRAP is a SS elicited by stimulation was tested in the present study investigating the relationships between the SS and the two types of RAR by means o

Neuronal activity evoked in the inferior colliculus of the cat by surface macroelectrodes and penetrating microelectrodes implanted in the cochlear nucleus.

Persons lacking functional auditory nerves cannot benefit from cochlear implants, but an auditory brainstem implant (ABI) utilizing stimulating electrodes adjacent to or on their cochlear nucleus (CN) can restore some hearing. We are investigating the feasibility of supplementing these surface electrodes with penetrating microstimulating electrodes within the ventral CN (VCN), and how the two types of electrodes can be used synergistically. Multiunit neuronal responses evoked by VCN electrical stimulation with surface electrodes and microelectrodes were recorded in the inferior colliculus (ICC

A Novel Microelectrode Based on Joule Heating and Impedance Spectroscopy for Inducing and Monitoring the Aggregation of HCV-Specific Probes.

The world urgently needs new methods to quickly and efficiently detect mutated viruses. An RNA-AuNP-based colorimetric biosensor is a highly sensitive, specific, and cost-effective tool that enables rapid, visual detection of target molecules for applications in disease diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and forensic analysis. An RNA-AuNP-based colorimetric biosensor requires precise control over nanoparticle dispersion and aggregation, which can be achieved using temperature regulation. A novel on-chip microelectrode is proposed to induce and monitor the aggregation of RNA-attached gold n

Minimally invasive implantation of scalable high-density cortical microelectrode arrays for multimodal neural decoding and stimulation.

High-bandwidth brain-computer interfaces rely on invasive surgical procedures or brain-penetrating electrodes. Here we describe a cortical 1,024-channel thin-film microelectrode array and we demonstrate its minimally invasive surgical delivery that avoids craniotomy in porcine models and cadavers. We show recording and stimulation from the same electrodes to large portions of the cortical surface, and the reversibility of delivering the implants to multiple functional regions of the brain without damaging the cortical surface. We evaluate the performance of the interface for high-density neura

Evaluation of a low-cost training application to train microelectrode recording identification in deep brain stimulation surgeries.

OBJECTIVE: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a surgical technique that alleviates motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease. Surgically implanted microelectrodes stimulate the basal ganglia to improve patients' symptoms. One of the training challenges for neurophysiologists is to identify during surgery the target area of the brain in which the electrodes must be implanted. Identification is based both on visual and auditory inspection of the microelectrode recordings (MERs) as they are lowered through the basal ganglia. We present the preliminary evaluation of DBSTrainer, a novel desktop applicatio

Multiformity of extracellular microelectrode recordings from Aδ neurons in the dorsal root ganglia: a computational modeling study.

Microelectrodes serve as a fundamental tool in electrophysiology research throughout the nervous system, providing a means of exploring neural function with a high resolution of neural firing information. We constructed a hybrid computational model using the finite element method and multicompartment cable models to explore factors that contribute to extracellular voltage waveforms that are produced by sensory pseudounipolar neurons, specifically smaller A-type neurons, and that are recorded by microelectrodes in dorsal root ganglia. The finite element method model included a dorsal root gangl

Acute in vivo Recording with a Generic Parylene Microelectrode Array Implanted with Dip-coating Method into the Rat Brain.

Flexible polymer-based microelectrode arrays (MEAs) can reduce tissue inflammation and foreign body response and greatly prolong the lifetime of neural implants. However, standard and customized polymer devices are only accessible to limited groups. To better promote the development and application of polymer MEAs, we have launched the Polymer Implantable Electrode (PIE) Foundry and developed a 64-channel Parylene C-based MEA with generic electrodes layout that can be used to record from both cortical and sub-cortical regions in rodents. In addition, a practical dip-coating protocol for the in

Local abnormal ventricular activity detection in scar-related VT: Microelectrode versus conventional bipolar electrode.

BACKGROUND: Conventional bipolar electrodes (CBE) may be suboptimal to detect local abnormal ventricular activities (LAVAs). Microelectrodes (ME) may improve the detection of LAVAs. This study sought to elucidate the detectability of LAVAs using ME compared with CBE in patients with scar-related ventricular tachycardia (VT). METHODS: We included consecutive patients with structural heart disease who underwent radiofrequency catheter ablation for scar-related VT using either of the following catheters equipped with ME: QDOTTM or IntellaTip MIFITM. Detection field of LAVA potentials were classi

Microelectrode Array Recording of Sinoatrial Node Firing Rate to Identify Intrinsic Cardiac Pacemaking Defects in Mice.

The sinoatrial node (SAN), located in the right atrium, contains the pacemaker cells of the heart, and dysfunction of this region can cause tachycardia or bradycardia. Reliable identification of cardiac pacemaking defects requires the measurement of intrinsic heart rates by largely preventing the influence of the autonomic nervous system, which can mask rate deficits. Traditional methods to analyze intrinsic cardiac pacemaker function include drug-induced autonomic blockade to measure in vivo heart rates, isolated heart recordings to measure intrinsic heart rates, and sinoatrial strip or singl

Functional characterization of GABAA receptor-mediated modulation of cortical neuron network activity in microelectrode array recordings.

The numerous γ-aminobutyric acid type A receptor (GABAAR) subtypes are differentially expressed and mediate distinct functions at neuronal level. In this study we have investigated GABAAR-mediated modulation of the spontaneous activity patterns of primary neuronal networks from murine frontal cortex by characterizing the effects induced by a wide selection of pharmacological tools at a plethora of activity parameters in microelectrode array (MEA) recordings. The basic characteristics of the primary cortical neurons used in the recordings were studied in some detail, and the expression levels o

Fabrication of two-layer poly(dimethyl siloxane) devices for hydrodynamic cell trapping and exocytosis measurement with integrated indium tin oxide microelectrodes arrays.

The design, fabrication and test of a microfluidic cell trapping device to measure single cell exocytosis were reported. Procedures on the patterning of double layer template based on repetitive standard photolithography of AZ photoresist were investigated. The replicated poly(dimethyl siloxane) devices with 2.5 μm deep channels were proved to be efficient for stopping cells. Quantal exocytosis measurement can be achieved by targeting single or small clumps of chromaffin cells on top of the 10 μm × 10 μm indium tin oxide microelectrodes arrays with the developed microdevice. And about 72 % of

Millifluidic triMEA organoid platform with stretchable microelectrode arrays for parallel organoid electrophysiology under standardized perfusion.

Organoids enable rigorous studies of neurodevelopment and disease, yet existing platforms often compromise between precise microenvironment control and reliable electrophysiological measurement. The challenge of achieving uniform perfusion alongside multi-well volumetric neural recordings limits parallel functional characterization and technical reproducibility across samples. Here, we present the triMEA millifluidic platform, which integrates three stretchable microelectrode arrays within a single device and delivers uniform perfusion across three independent wells. A single inlet supplies id

Development of a High-Sensitivity Electrochemical Immunoassay Using a Fully 3D-Printed Electrocatalytic Microelectrode Probe Platform.

Electrochemical biosensors are a promising route to point-of-care diagnostics, yet their translation is hindered by the need for electrode surface functionalization, which introduces variability, increases cost and production complexity, and limits scalability and stability. Additive manufacturing using conductive filaments for rapid fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) electrodes overcomes these limitations. This study evaluates composite filaments comprising polylactic acid (PLA), carbon black (CB), and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) for fused filament fabrication (FFF) of electroche

Lipid nanoparticle-mediated Cd14 siRNA delivery ameliorates the acute inflammatory response to intracortical microelectrode implantation.

Intracortical microelectrodes (IMEs) are an integral component of brain computer interfaces (BCIs) designed to study and treat neurological disorders. Unfortunately, IMEs tend to fail prematurely due in part to the macrophage-mediated inflammation in response to implantation injury and the persistent foreign body reaction. Previous work has established that cluster of differentiation 14 (CD14) is implicated in the neuroinflammatory response to IME implants. CD14 is a conserved damage-associated coreceptor that facilitates immune activation in the presence of inflammatory damage-associated stim

Investigating The Network-Wide Mechanisms of Pallidal Deep Brain Stimulation Using High-Density Microelectrode Arrays.

Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder characterized by abnormal muscle control affecting voluntary movements and sustained postures. Although dystonia is associated with basal ganglia dysfunction, increasing evidence suggests that the cerebellum is involved in its pathophysiology. This protocol presents in vivo pallidal deep brain stimulation (DBS) in a dystonic hamster model (dtsz hamster) combined with ex vivo high-density microelectrode array (HD-MEA) recordings to investigate cerebellar activity. The protocol includes (1) DBS surgery for electrode and stimulator implantation, (2) ac

Zeolite-iron Oxide Hybrid on an Interdigitated Microelectrode to Auxiliary Monitoring Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms by Aptamerantibody Sandwich.

INTRODUCTION: An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a bulge/enlargement in an artery that expands over time and is more likely to rupture. Imaging techniques such as Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography scans are commonly used to investigate the condition of AAA. However, these techniques are expensive due to their complicated procedure. METHODS: This research developed a highly sensitive zeolite-Fe-based interdigitated microelectrode (IDM) sensor to quantify osteopontin, a well-known biomarker for AAA. To quantify the osteopontin, an aptamer and antibody sandwich pattern was de
