Microplastics in human skeletal tissues: Presence, distribution and health implications.

Although microplastics have been detected in human blood, placenta and other tissues. In this study, for the first time, we characterized the presence and variation of microplastic deposition patterns in three human skeletal tissues, namely the bone, cartilage, and intervertebral discs. Forty microplastic fragments were observed in 24 samples from the bone, cartilage, and intervertebral disc, ranging from 25.44 to 407.39 μm in diameter. The deposition abundance of microplastics in the human intervertebral disc (61.1 ± 44.2 particles/g) was higher than those in the bone (22.9 ± 15.7 particles/g

Sponge-based motor integrated with fluorescence signal for microplastics capture.

Widespread use of plastic products had led to the prevalence of microplastics (MPs) in ecosystems and posed a great threat to the environment. Therefore, there was a pressing demand to quantify and remove MPs. This work presented two types of composite sponge-based motors with different driving mechanisms for the capture and fluorescence tracing of polyethylene (PE) MPs in water bodies. The first type of motor was driven by decomposing H2O2, and coated PDA on the surface of melamine sponge by in situ polymerization. Then TiO2 and boron-doped carbon nanoparticles (BCNPs) were deposited to form

Elevated blood microplastics and their potential association with Parkinson's disease.

Microplastic (MP) contamination in human blood and its potential link to Parkinson's disease (PD) remain poorly understood. In this study, we collected whole blood samples from 21 PD patients and 12 age- and sex-matched healthy controls under strict anticontamination protocols. A lifestyle questionnaire was administered to assess MP exposure-related habits, revealing that PD patients reported more frequent use of disposable plastic products and bottled water consumption, suggesting greater environmental exposure. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS), laser direct infrared

Polystyrene microplastics induce potential toxicity through the gut-mammary axis.

Microplastics (MPs), as an emerging environmental pollutant, pose a grave threat to food safety and public health. However, studies on MP toxicity to organs other than the intestine remain limited, especially its link to the intestinal microbiota. To address this gap, we evaluated the potential toxicity of polystyrene (PS)-MPs to the gut and mammary glands during lactation exposure in mice. PS-MPs (~1 μm) can disrupt the intestinal barrier and cause colonic inflammation and gut microbiota dysbiosis. Moreover, they can accumulate in mammary tissue and cause inflammatory damage. Detection of microplastics in pterygium tissue: Implications for environmental hazards.

PurposeThis study aimed to report a case of microplastics (MPs) detection in a pterygium patient's tissue.Case reportA pterygium specimen was obtained from the right eye of a 43-year-old woman by surgical removal of a recurred pterygium. The number, morphology, and material type of the MPs in pterygium were identified using Raman microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Ten MPs were detected in the pterygium, which corresponded to polyethylene (PE) (n = 7), polystyrene (PS) (n = 2), and polypropylene (PP) (n = 1). The size of MPs ranged from 5-9 µm (n = 5, PE or PS), 10-19 µm (n = 4, PE),

Microplastics in maternal blood, fetal appendages, and umbilical vein blood.

Microplastics (MPs) have been detected in placenta and amniotic fluid, but there is no research on whether MPs exist in the other two fetal appendages: fetal membrane and umbilical cord. Additionally, the existence of MPs in umbilical vein blood remains unexplored. Furthermore, it is unclear whether MPs in maternal blood are associated with those in umbilical vein blood and fetal appendages. In this study, we selected 12 full-term pregnant people who delivered by cesarean section, and finally detected 16 kinds of MPs from maternal blood, fetal appendages, and umbilical vein blood by laser dire

Tissue accumulation of microplastics and potential health risks in human.

Microplastics have become ubiquitous throughout the environment. Humans constantly ingest and inhale microplastics, increasing concerns about the health risks of microplastic exposure. However, limited data impedes a full understanding of the internal exposure to microplastics. Herein, to evaluate microplastic exposure via the respiratory and digestive systems, we used laser direct infrared spectroscopy to identify microplastics >20 μm in size in different human tissues. Consequently, 20-100 μm microplastics were concentrated in all tissues, with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) being the dominant pol

First identification of microplastics in human uterine fibroids and myometrium.

Microplastics (MPs) pollution has received widespread attention in recent years as the use of plastics continues to increase. However, currently no studies have reported the finding of MPs in human uterine fibroids (UFs) and myometrium tissues. In this study, UFs tissues (n = 48) and myometrium tissues (n = 40) from 48 patients and myometrium tissues (n = 8) from healthy population were collected. Following digestion of the samples by 10% KOH and 30% H2O2, MPs were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively using Raman spectroscopy. The 16 UFs and myometrium tissue samples contained an average

Chronic exposure to polystyrene microplastics induces renal fibrosis via ferroptosis.

With the increasing prevalence of microplastics (MPs) in the environment, human health has become a growing concern. After entering the human body, MPs accumulate in the kidneys, indicating that the kidneys are their major target organs. This study investigated nephrotoxicity associated with MPs, with a specific focus on polystyrene (PS) MPs and amino-functionalized polystyrene (PS-NH2) MPs. Although previous studies have documented the nephrotoxic effects associated with short-term exposure to MPs, the mechanisms of kidney toxicity caused by chronic long-term exposure to MPs remain largely un

Simultaneous degradation of microplastics and sludge during wet air oxidation.

Microplastics (MPs) generated from daily life are commonly collected by urban sewage pipe networks and then transfer to sludge in wastewater treatment plants. Conventional biochemical treatment processes cannot degrade MPs effectively, causing an ecological risk via sludge land use. Wet air oxidation (WAO) is a promising sludge treatment technology with a strong ability to decompose complex organic matter, but its potential for the removal of MPs in sludge was unclear. In this study, three common MPs (polyethylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene terephthalate, which are called PEMPs, PSMPs, and

Microplastics in Internal Tissues of Companion Animals from Urban Environments.

Companion animals living in urban areas are exposed to environmental contaminants, which may include microplastics. A preliminary study was conducted by collecting postmortem samples from the internal tissue (lungs, ileum, liver, kidney, and blood clots) of 25 dogs (Canis familiaris) and 24 cats (Felis catus) living in an urban environment in Porto metropolitan area, Portugal. Suspected microplastics were found in 80 samples from 35 animals (18 cats and 17 dogs), often occurring in more than one tissue of the same animal (71.4%), primarily under small sizes (50.3% as 1-10 µm). Surface characteristics of polystyrene microplastics mainly determine their coagulation performances.

In this study, polyaluminum sulfate (PAS) coagulant was selected to evaluate the coagulation performance of polystyrene microplastics. Overall, polystyrene removal efficiency was 90.4 % at the optimal dosage of 7.5 g/L of PAS. In addition to the type of coagulants (e.g. polyaluminum chloride, iron(III) chloride, and polyferric sulfate), surface characteristics such as densities, particle sizes, morphologies, adsorbed substances, and functional groups can also significantly impact the coagulation performance. The coagulation ratios are reduced to (2.6 ± 0.1)% when the densities of microplastics

Fabrication of gold nanostars for SERS detection of microplastics in water.

Environmental contamination by microplastic particles has become a globally recognized issue, attracting increasing scientific and regulatory attention. In this study, a rapid and efficient method for detecting microplastics was developed using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) combined with highly active substrates, enabling real-time monitoring and fast analysis. Gold nanostars (Au NSs) with sharp multi-branched structures were controllably synthesized using chloroauric acid (HAuCl₄), silver nitrate (AgNO₃), and ascorbic acid (AA). Their formation was achieved by regulating the anis

The impact of microplastics on the human reproductive system: a narrative review.

Microplastics (MPs), plastic particles smaller than 5 mm, are ubiquitous environmental contaminants and have been reported in human blood, placenta, semen, testis, ovarian follicular fluid, and penile tissue. This narrative review examines evidence relevant to reproductive and sexual health, with emphasis on endocrine signaling, oxidative stress, inflammation, and possible multigenerational effects. Human studies currently demonstrate tissue detection and, in cross-sectional semen studies, associations with selected semen parameters; they do not establish causation. In rodents, fish, invertebr

Fluorescently Labelled Polypropylene as a Model Microplastic for Cellular Imaging.

Polypropylene (PP) is the second most produced plastic globally and is environmentally pervasive in the form of microplastics (MP). The cellular localisation and fate of MPs within biological systems remain poorly understood. We present a method for the covalent functionalisation of PP with the fluorescent label, rhodamine B (Rb), and its subsequent MP evaluation in a human embryonic kidney model cell line (HEK293T). Rb was successfully coupled into PP (PP Rb ) under Steglich esterification conditions. PP Rb is stabile under physiological pH and so can be utilised in vitro, offering a signific

Microplastics as both a driver of genitourinary cancers and a deliverer of treatments.

Microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) are environmental contaminants increasingly detected in human tissues, raising public health concerns. Although evidence is still insufficient to directly link MNPs to genitourinary cancers (GU), this Review examines their potential role in prostate, bladder, and renal cell carcinoma. Proposed mechanisms include chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, genotoxicity, and endocrine disruption driven by plastic-associated additives. Emerging studies report quantitative detection of MNPs within human prostate and bladder tumors, with higher burdens associated w

The impact of microplastics on the mice gut microbiome: a meta-analysis.

Microplastics are nearly ubiquitous in the natural environment. There is increasing awareness of the ingestion of microplastics in a wide range of wild animals and humans, but their health and fitness impacts remain poorly understood. Mounting evidence suggests that microplastics could accumulate in the gut, affecting the microbiome and hindering its function. This may constitute a direct pathway through which exposure to microplastics could affect health and disease. However, prior studies on the effects of microplastic exposure on the microbiome show contrasting findings raising the question

The Effects of Microplastics and Additives on Ecosystem Function, Structure, and Signaling.

Microplastics (MPs) and their associated chemical additives are pervasive contaminants whose ecological impacts extend beyond organismal toxicity to fundamentally alter ecosystem processes. We synthesize current understanding of how MPs affect three interconnected dimensions of ecosystem integrity: ecosystem structure, ecosystem function, and ecosystem signaling. Across terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems, MPs alter biodiversity, community composition, trophic interactions, and habitat complexity, driving cascading changes in food-web architecture. They also impair key ecosystem fun
